Title: Down Div 1 League Table
Post by: amallon on September 22, 2010, 11:03:35 AM
Has anyone got a division 1 table?  There seems to be a problem with the county site.

The whole system is a disgrace. If you finish top of a league you should win it. As for promotion/relegation, top 2 go up, bottom 2 go down. No playoff, no round robin bullshit!!!! Can we not just keep it simple FFS!

That's all right if there are no starred games.  What if An Riocht had been in the bottom 2-3 having played a lot of games without there 4 county players.

BIG DEAL!! Mayobridge, Burren, Kilcoo, Clonduff, Bryansford or whoever else you want to mention over recent years have also had to played starred games and topped the league. The excuse of teams like Saval/Ballyholland/Kingdom having to struggle on without thier 'star players' doesnt wash with me. Burren have done without McCartan/McKernan/Rooney for this past 3 or 4 years, Mayobridge have had Benny, Sexton, Walsh and co starred for what nearly 10years? The thing is those teams I mentioned, Bridge and Burren etc have strong enough squads to cope without these county men. They should not be punished because of it.

It stinks of the same pathetic reason the English FA give for the national teams woeful performances in recent times, 'there are too many forgieners in the english game', bullshit! English players just arent good enough, train them better! If english players were good enough they would play for the top clubs.

If these so called weaker teams are so bad without thier county players, its up to the rest of the squad to pull their weight, and be better, coach the youngsters better, and they wont be called 'one man teams' anymore. Please tell me theres posters who agree with me?

Rant over. f**k I should be on the county board..

Eagle Lord, Down's system for handling county players is put forward as best practice by central GAA.

Look at this very simple fact. Down reached a completely unexpected All-Ireland final this year, and the whole club fixture programme will still be completed by early November. This is an incredible achievement.

So go on ahead and have your gurn about the strongest rising to the top. But while you're at it, be thankful you live in a county that actually runs club matches side-by-side with county commitments. And the reason we can is because the clubs agreed to a system based on fairness to everyone involved.

What does it matter what age I am RedandBlackareBack? I was voicing my opinion. I feel strongly about it, a league is a league. If you dont have anything constructive to add then get out. I accept the wobblers input, not yours.

Eagle lord, I'd also point out that the system of playoffs leads to fewer dead rubbers at the end of a league campaign. Every team has something to fight for until the last few series, and quite often it comes down to the last day.

Think of how moribund the last 5/6 weeks of the EPL would be without Champions League and UEFA cup places. Half the teams would have nout to play for.

Thats what championship is for is it not wobbler? Cut throat, knockout the whole way, on the day, the glory of the underdog knocking out a big gun and all that?
