Gulf Gaelic Games and All Stars 2007
29 January 2007

On Friday and Saturday 26th/27th January the biggest festival of Gaelic Games ever in the Middle East took place in the Dubai Polo and Equestrian club, United Arab Emirates.

Over the two days just under 70 games of gaelic football, hurling and camogie were played by the 26 teams that participated including six clubs from Ireland and two from London. Limavady Wolfhounds, Derry narrowly beat Hong Kong in the Men's A final in a cracking game with Fulham Irish, London taking the plate and Finnegan's Irish of Dubai winning the social competition. In the Ladies Football both Dubai Teams proved far too strong for the opposition with Dubai A winning the final.

The camogie proved a much closer fought contest with St. Munna's, Westmeath just edging out Dubai Celts in a very tight final. On Saturday afternoon we were treated to a high scoring game of hurling when St. Bridgids, Dublin took on a Dubai Celts selection. Level at half time, St. Brigids pulled away to win by six points in the final quarter.

The highlight of the weekend was of course the Vodafone Allstars exhibition game between the 2005 and 2006 selections. This game brought down the curtain on the inter county careers of legends Peter Canavan and Seamus Moynihan. Watched by a crowd of over 2000 both sets of teams displayed great examples of the skills in gaelic football before the 2006 class eventually succumbed to their predecessors 4-13 to 3-10.

The allstar game was preceded by an U-6 and U-12 game with Dubai Celts taking on Abu Dhabi Na Fianna. After displaying their skills in this game the children then gave the Allstars a guard of honour as they entered the field.
