Dromore win PJ Roper tournament
Dromore gave a disciplined and effective display of football to win the PJ Roper under 16 tournament run by Aodh Ruadh. Ballyshannon was blessed with a dry day for the tournament, although the atmosphere was humid and made the going difficult for players.

Dromore impressed as they came through section 'A' undefeated, with victories over Shamrock Gaels from south Sligo, hosts Aodh Ruadh and Naomh Bríd from Ballintra. Saint Mary's from Sligo city were also undefeated, topping section 'B' with wins over Fermanagh sides Derrygonnelly Harps and Erne Gaels.

The final pitted Saint Mary's against Dromore in Father Tierney Park. The Tyrone side were first out of the traps with Niall Slevin driving over a neat point after a penetrating attack. Shortly after Dromore struck wide from a placed ball before Saint Mary's took the initiative with Ben McGarry doing a lot of good work around the middle.

However the Sligo men couldn't make their dominance count and it was broken when Mattie McCaffrey made an outstanding fetch from a kick out. He quickly set up an attack and although the shot went wide it put Dromore back on the front foot. And there were quick results as Ruairi McCusker did some fine work to feed Colm McRory who finished low and hard into the net to leave Dromore 1-1 up half way through the first half. A minute later Niall Slevin added to Dromore's tally with a free.

The remainder of the half was marked by fractured play. It was Saint Mary's who had the last say though, with Colm Egan striking over from a free to make the half time score 1-2 to 0-1.

Saint Mary's came out all guns blazing in the second half and it wasn't long before Seamie Cawley had the ball in the Dromore net after a strong individual burst through the defence. Colm McRory notched on a point for the Tyrone lads a minute later, but it was Saint Mary's who were dominant in this period of the game. They saw one effort for a point come back off the Dromore cross bar before forcing a penalty.

This proved to be the turning point of the match. Ben McGarry, who was excellent throughout, stepped up and shot well, but Declan McKenna in nets was equal to the effort and produced an even better save to deny Saint Mary's a goal from the rebound. Dromore kicked on from that point, driven in particular by the efforts of Cathal Teague at half back. With only a minute left in the game Ruairi Sludden kicked the insurance point for Dromore from 30 metres out off the left boot. Referee Shane Toolan whistled up shortly after to make Dromore 2009 PJ Roper winners on a scoreline of 1-4 to 1-1.

Aodh Ruadh Bord na nÓg Chairman, Paddy Kelly, was master of ceremonies for the presentation ceremony after the final, thanking all the teams for attending, the match officials and everyone who helped out with the food, before calling upon Mary Roper, PJ's wife, to present runners up medals to the Saint Mary's team. Paddy then called upon county star, Brian Roper, PJ's son to present the PJ Roper trophy to the Dromore captain Mattie McCaffrey.

Who was top scorer in the club scene at the weekend?
18 year old Mark Faloon scored 9 excellent points for Donaghmore against Eglish.  Id say its his third senior game.

Gavin Teague - Ardboe
Niall McKenna - Donaghmore
Mattie Donnelly - Trillick

Gavin is a class act and a very, very consistent performer.  McKenna and Donnelly were impressive against Ardboe in the league this season for their respective clubs and also look to have bright futures ahead.

Mark was probably unfortunately put in midfield for the Tyrone minors this year and whilst hes a big strapping lad hes a forward.  Hes an accomplished rugby player as well which has contributed to his strength and conditioning for his age, exceptional pace and accuracy and probably would benefit from specialist coaching as a forward as he has played everywhere from full back to full forward during his youth.

Deccy McCrossan seems to be doing the business for Owen Roe's.  Johnny Lafferty also for Urney and Marty McNulty for Strabane.

Serious questions have to be asked of the minor managers this year Mark playing MF and u saying he a forward, that Tierney fella that was CHF plays all his football as a CHB. I no someone else told me the FF, cant mind his name played as a MF, and Declan Connolly who was corner back plays half forward for his club.

The FF was Ronan O'Neill, and there's no doubt his best position is in the half forward line, whilst Sean Warnock, as proven over the course of the MacRory, is one of the best prospects we have in county as a FB and yet never played a minute at Full Back for the Minors over the past 2 years.

As for serious questions being asked of the management this year, a cynic might say that the talent contained in last years side masked the deficiencies in team selection but sure who cares when you're winning?

I think Marty McNulty is a class act. Always has been. I honestly believe that he's a player Mickey Harte could've made an excellent inter-county player. Very surprising he never received inter county recognition at any level.

agree with you there norf, warner mullan would have grabbed all the headlines for strabane, but always thought Mc nulty was a far better player.
Not sure if he could have cut it at intercounty, but very good club player

Think Danny McBride is the real star for Strabane.... honestly think he will be on county senior panel next year...county under 21 last year.... very physical and great athlete....was brilliant against cookstown in championship... think he would be capable of making the step up

Interesting comments...Add to those young Hicks who has proved that he is an excellent target man at Full forward yet was played in the half back line.....And Mc Cann who is a class forward who can always be relied upon to get a few scores...

Is it time to give a wee bit of credit to the CCC this year? I don't recall too many whinges or moans to date, and with the leagues at the half way mark it's looking like a job well done. However it'll probably get more tricky here on in with Tyrone games etc.

The CCC must  ::) when they see the efforts they put in, only for clubs to pull out, not field etc. The U21s are starting to become farcical, and it's mostly down to the clubs.

Donaghmore St. Patrick's  - v Errigal Ciaran  W/O
Cookstown Fr.Rocks  - v Moortown St. Malachy's  W/O
Kildress Wolfe Tone's  - v Greencastle St. Patrick's  W/O
Gortin St. Patrick's  W/O v Glenelly St. Joseph's
Brockagh Emmetts  - v Brackaville Owen Roes  W/O

With scoring average being important in some groups, a team not fielding might be more beneficial than fielding and losing.
