Title: Manning Cup
Post by: Zulu on July 15, 2015, 08:56:27 PM
Manning Cup Round 3
Full Time Sligo: 1-23(26)  Laois: 0-2(2)

What the hell is going on in Laois? That's a ridiculous score for an U16 competition between two counties that should be broadly competitive at any level.

Lots of mismatched results like this at underage..

Time to split Sligo

How do you mean? I could understand a team missing a few might get beaten by a team they would beat with a full hand but getting beaten by 24 points and only scoring 2 against a county you would be expected to be competitive against is very odd. I mean Laois' second 15 would be expected to give Sligo's first 15 a reasonable game, and vice versa so this result is quite striking to me.

This year alone we beat Meath and Sligo by a similar margin at U21. Rarely would those ties be anything other than tight but it happens. We'll see how Sligo fare in the Ted Webb and we might know if it's a really good Sligo panel or a really poor Laois one.

Sligo have two teams in the Ted Webb while we only have one.
Are we witnessing the birth of a new superpower in Connacht?

Don't know much about the Sligo team but it's great to see a win like this.  I wouldn't get too carried away with one win.  Didn't mayo beat Galway by a cricket score in the minor league and look what happened last week.
Hopefully our C of excellence will encourage more players to participate.  Hopefully we can add another win or two later this week😜😜😜

Apparently, Laois thought this was a hurling competition and sent the wrong squad to it. They decided to play anyway and took the beating.

This is totally made up.

It's quite clear that Sligo U16's were juiced up. Only explanation.

No Zanes, Zachs, Dwanes or Daynes on the Laois squad. Very disappointing

I see Kildare beat Roscommon last night, bad week for the Rossies.

Last minute goal gave ye a 1 point win I believe.
When we learn the bit about games not being over till the final whistle there'll be no stopping us.

Ref found 5 mins extra time from somewhere. Led to believe both sides didn't play well but conversely the more tight ones you win the better.

How many teams are in the Fr Manning Cup this year?, Kildare and Laois must be fairly new to it,

Regarding entering two teams into these tournaments, Meath enter two teams into the Gerry Reilly however they aren't 'A' & 'B'.
This means your odds of winning it drop significantly but you get to look at a lot of players.

Kildare have been in it a few years anyway - Ros played them at least twice before last night.

Meath have been doing this for a few years, It's good to look at the players but no good for the players getting hammered either like Meath have been. When those players are Minor they would lack confidence against teams like Dublin. Dublin enter 1 team.

The last two years Sligo White have been markedly a B side in the Tedd Webb, shipping some hammerings.

3rd year Kildare and Laois have played in this competition I think.

Two groups of four.

Kildare
Offaly
Leitrim
Roscommon

Westmeath
Sligo
Longford
Laois

Westmeath topped their group won all three games. Offaly v Leitrim next week a win for Offaly then Kildare would top the group on head to head having beat Offaly. if Leitrim win they would top group.

Westmeath have a good enough record in the Gerry Reilly as well.
You'd wonder why their minors are never up to much.

Made a right balls of that team. They won the Fr. Manning & Gerry Reilly cups before he got his hands on them.

He had his 3 years, a golden 3 years as well. Would love to see him back in charge. Someone needs to set-up a petition.

The opening paragraph in his wiki made me laugh.

To follow up on this, Sligo Black (who if like previous years are the A Sligo U16 team) lost by three points, 0-03 to to 1-03, to Mayo NS in the Ted Webb Cup tonight. Games are played in 40 minute blitz format so that explains the lower scoring somewhat.

Mayo NS would be one of the two geographically split U16 Mayo teams and not a B team. Take from that what you will.

Impressive for Cavan to beat Dublin so well given the resources at their disposal

Louth and Wicklow were also involved.

Monaghan gave Cavan the toughest game in the first round.
