Ivan Cooper ex civil rights activist and SDLP politician.

Very sorry to hear this. A name synonymous with the Civil Rights movement. The fact that he was from a working class Protestant background significantly increased the personal risk of violence that he was open to. He therefore was willing to put his head above the parapet for others.

Rest In Peace.

Well said.
RIP.

The lack of condolences from DUP / UUP since his passing tells it's own story

Them DUP friggers are bitter. Driving home yesterday and one of them was being interviewed on radio six counties (cant remember the name of the p***k) but he had to make the point 3 times that Ivan turned his back on the unionist people when he got involved with the civil rights movement. The man was trying to help both sides of the community but these pricks refuse to see that.

Sure the Civil Rights Movement was led by the IRA, don't ya know. That shite was spouted by Paisley and it stuck, and many unionists still have that view of the CRM.

The CRM message would have let the cat out of the bag to the wider world that Catholics had been tramped into the ground for decades. So Paisley adds the IRA into the mix, which discredits anything they said or stood for.

Sad to hear about Cooper. It's a pity there aren't more figures about like him with a bit of common sense and guts. All we have today are the useless, self-serving, gutless parasites in politics now.

You have to give him massive respect for what he did back in those days. His family must have went through a terrible time because he fought for what he believed in. If it were me I would replace the statue of Carson at the front of Stormont with one of Ivan Copper. Would be more fitting.

In fairness, Swann of the UU did not adopt the bitter tone of the DUP.

Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader Robin Swann said Mr Cooper "made a major contribution to political life in Northern Ireland".

"At a time when many were resorting to violence as a means of achieving political aims, his commitment to purely non-violent, peaceful and democratic methods was an example of how politics should be conducted."
