General discussion / Modern living
January 08, 2013, 05:12:41 PM
The wife been nagging about my phone usage, apart from taking calls, i'd always lift it to check twitter/facebook, play with an APP or surf the net, anything. I put it down to keeping the hands busy, as i'd always have something in my hands, be it a pen, a book or something.

It begs the question, could we cope without our mobiles, our tablets, laptops, Pc's, emails, instant messengers etc. Say go back to the late 80's when it was An Post and the landline, the PC was on the horizon.

Would be interesting to try and live a week without the modern "toys" and see how we manage. Whatever about work i don't think it be a runner but if you had just a landline at the house and a notebook full of numbers (no mobile numbers) for social calls, running the club, contacting family etc could we cope and function?

I'm sure we could manage but i don't think i'd be comfortable with it and would feel "removed" from life, be no teletext to check for a start.

No, its not related to Seanie J or any Ex Cavan players but seen this on facebook and twitter.

Seems a young buck put a houseparty on facebook in Lavey, Co Cavan and its taken on a life of its own on message boards and social media.

Anyone heading?  ;) And why hasn't any of our Cavan heads passed on the details on our board?

Hurling Discussion / Monaghan Hurlers
April 10, 2012, 10:59:20 AM
It now appears that the Hurlers are fully on strike and county Board have said that they won't be able to fulfill their fixture this weekend - final of the NHL Div 3.

Players statement released through GPA yesterday http://gaelicplayers.com/

Was chatting on it last night and someone suggested that the county board can suspend all the players involved? Is this possible or would they want to, even if they could.

County board under serious pressure at the minute between this and the failings of the senior football team.

General discussion / Fainting

Fainted for the first time ever on Saturday. Was out on a run, few of us were going to do some hill running together. Myself and the brother ran out to the starting point - about 1.5km and we took it easy, chatting most of the way.

Anyways got there and we walked about 50m to a gate we would be meeting at, we were first there, at the gate, i became very lighted headed, which I said as i leaned on the gate. Next thing I remember is coming round lying on the ground in the muck and wet, brother shouting at me. It was just like be woke from a sleep - dazed and confused. Brother said my eyes never closed and I was shaking a bit, was out for 4/5 seconds he reckoned.

Bit of a shock if truth be told. Got checked out afterwards and nothing was unusual, just to keep an eye on it. They said it was possible dehydration but i'd have thought this unusual, as I certainly wouldn't have had less water than usual in the days before.

Went for a run yesterday and no repeat thankfully. Its a very strange feeling afterwards though.

Anyone watching the new series on Ch 4.

Love watching the show. Last nights was very good but it was clear that the Irish man doing the project had no money issues - O'Donovan had an engineering company in Cardiff it seems.

Great build but not sure I'd like to be in a house sitting in the sea in the depths of winter, i think though it was a holiday home for them and their boat.

GAA Discussion / All-ireland Final tickets
August 29, 2011, 11:42:54 AM
I'm sure this is going to pop up at some stage but anyways:

I've two All-Ireland final hurling tickets and would be looking to swap for two all-ireland football tickets.

Anyone interested or have any suggestions let me know here or by PM.

Thanks.

Brennan scoffs at modern management techniques
06 July 2011

Derry manager John BrennanColourful Derry football manager John Brennan has no time for today's coaching fads.

Brennan is the archetypal old-school man-manager and he is undaunted by the prospect of coming up against the modern techniques of Jim McGuinness in this year's Ulster final:

"I use a laptop, too, you know," he quipped at last night's press briefing in Owenbeg.

"They might be slick; they might be all that; but I have come across these people before.

"We played Sligo in a challenge match for the opening of Ballinascreen's new pitch. There was a black pot along the sideline. It was a beautiful day. I thought someone was setting up a barbecue. I thought we were going to get burgers.

"But it was a heart monitor machine which Sligo had brought with them for a challenge game in Ballinascreen. I thought to myself 'There is something going haywire here'.

"You can carry your laptops but football is still a simple game. Jim McGuinness may have ideas, but this year Derry have encountered Mickey Harte and Kieran McGeeney and we managed to come out on the right side of the result.

"I'm about long enough. I don't fear anyone. I respect my own intelligence and my ability to make changes and adapt when necessary. I have no doubt about my own capabilities on the line."

Is he right, for an ameteur game with limited scope for rewards have the modern games become bogged down in modern, professional structures that have little impact on the game.

GAA Discussion / Monaghan V Offaly 25.06.11
June 24, 2011, 11:29:17 AM
No Thread on this  ;D sums up the interest in it.

Monaghan by a few points - say 3. Monaghan just don't seem to be a team at the minute that puts up big scores without also conceding a big score.

Dessie will be a miss and if Corey still out then we are very short on players to fill No. 3 and No. 6 - if only we hade 2 or 3 Darren Hughes. We also need to get a few scores from the half forward line - Chrissy McGuinness to start and Finlay to drop out to the 40.

No very little about Offaly but if reports are to be believed football is at a low ebb and a number of players have departed the squad - wounded animal with nothing to lose or a squad that don't give a dam?
