Fergie won the league with a bunch of kids after selling Hughes, Kanchelskis & Ince whilst when Benitez was at Liverpool there was that stat that Liverpool had outspent United in the premier league era.

City have thrown so much money at it since the new owners arrived and even Pep inherited Sterling, Aguero, De Bruyne, Fernandinho & Silva who are still 5 of his best front 6 and still spent £500m on top of that.

Looks like Herrera is gone judging by what Ole has said, its another stick to beat Woodward with; Did he actually think Herrera wouldn't get good offers from big clubs, he's clearly not a great player but he can do a job for a big club and is a model professional. Letting him run down his contract like that is ridiculous, could have easily have given him a new contract 18 months ago and then sold him should a new manager not wanted him. Woodward continues to be the biggest problem at club and will be until a director of football comes in, he's got to be under pressure from the Glazers at this stage. They must have paid out over £50m in sacking staff since Fergie left.

Great point and one I agree with - I don't support United, but there can be little doubt that we all get seduced by the players who can do something flashy or 'look a player'. When a club starts to decline somewhat there is always a chorus for sign this player, sign that player...usually attacking players who've got a decent youtube compilation. What Ander Herrera brings to the table is something that should be an absolute minimum at Manchester United, intensity, heart, guts, pride. I've watched plenty of games where he played, he's a nasty little so and so....but one I think United will badly miss, he was always leading the fight in games v Liverpool, Chelsea, City etc.

You been buying titles for years. You were nearly always in the top 3 buying players the years you won the league going bck to the start of the 90's. So don't kid yourself you's are any better than city.

In fairness Manchester United earned the money they spent on players and recently they have paid over the odds on players and wages because clubs and player agents fooled a clueless chief Executive. Manchester City won the lotto with the prize money of a trillion.

It's a fair point to be honest - what odds how you got the money? Professional Sport or Football isn't a game of morals - United had it relatively easy in the 90s too with their financial power.

Its not a fair point when you consider Manchester United became the dominant force in England from the brilliance of Ferguson who had to build the club from the bottom up and a chairman having the patience to keep him on in the late 80s.

Where would Manchester City be without their trillionaire owners? certainly no Pep Guardiola.  As for history, 20 years ago when Manchester United was winning the treble their neighbours in the old main road stadium were battling it out with the likes of Colchester United,Chesterfield and Gillingham in England's 3rd tier division.

History and success are two different things, some people seem unable to grasp this.

I get your point. I understand your point. But again, what business is it of any other club how another is funded? What City have done isn't for everyone but your talking here like United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal.....aren't all owed by billionaires. Just because City's billionaires tend to not really worry about getting anything back out of their club.

History is nonsense. . . Liverpool have loads of history which has counted for nought during the Premier League era.

City fans will be able to look back in 20 years time and laugh about how they were able to persuade the best coach in the world to win loads of titles with them while United jumped from Ferguson to mediocrity . . . Mourinho's second place last year looks like a minor miracle!!

History is over rated give me the present any time!!

History matters when your team is shit. Hence Liverpool harping on about it. Utd now at the same carry on.

Biggest spender in the Premier league:
92/93 Blackburn
93/94 Blackburn
94/95 Everton
95/96 Newcastle
96/97 Newcastle
97/98 Newcastle
98/99 Man Utd
99/00 Liverpool
00/01 Leeds

It's wrong to say Utd bought their success, Ferguson made Utd the club they are today and that's the reason they have so much money now. He didn't build his success on signing the best players. Sure some big signings came later, mostly young talented players Rooney, Ronaldo, Ferdinand etc but he rarely went out and bought superstars (veron but he flopped) and his spending was never greater than Europe's other top clubs. Like Abramovich in mid 00s or City now.

Helix.

Herrera to leave at end of season. Will be a loss. One of the few who gave a sh*ite playing for the club!

I know it's easy to extol the virtues of hardworking, chest thumping players. I've done it myself. But Herrera is one of the most limited midfielders in the top half of the EPL. He's a modern day Steffen Freund and just not good enough for any club with Champions League aspirations.

In a modern day squad of 20/25 players and 60 games a season there's plenty of room for a Herrera. United have had umpteen players of lesser quality than him win multiple league titles. He'd play games for City and Liverpool if he was with them

Cunny Funt

Very underrated player, would have been a ideal player on Ferguson's team, a true team player that got through some amount of donkey work. He delivered a rare thing on the current panel (leadership) and got the best out of the more flashy players around him. Letting a player like that go for free shows how poorly run the club is now and giving the chilean piano player ridiculous high wages was always going to cause issues like this down the line.

Dire Ear

As a Liverpool supporter,  I'm glad to see him going!  Would always be snipping at the oppositions heels;  a real battler even if he had limited ability
