General discussion / Hotmail Virus
December 20, 2010, 10:58:04 PM
Folks,
I don't particularly use my hotmail account that much, except for non personal email like ordering stuff online, bill pay, forum membership etc. It appears to be infected with a virus that is sending emails around my contact list at a rate of knots. For this reason I dont particularly want to delete the account as it is kind of useful - but Ive no idea how to delete this virus.

Any ideas - or do I need to put the hotmail account to sleep?

General discussion / Car Rental in the US
December 07, 2010, 04:11:02 PM
Has anyone got any sites or companies that they have found to be really competitive for pricing for a car rental in the USA?

Trying to book one for the folks at the minute and they are around 1200$ for 10 days. Granted - I think they will need 4 wheel drive just incase we get a bad storm while they are here.

Sorry for the new thread -but any help appreciated.

I've just today completed one year in a new job, working for a large drug testing company - and while I've always been aware of the corporate America lifestyle - time off frowned upon, no time off at christmas etc - I am currently just amazed at the workload, and the number of hours a week needed to get about 80% of it completed. I am currently knocking out between 55-60 hours a week
Not complaining mind you, having been out of work for 8 months I'd have bitten the companys arm off to get this job.

I am sure there are people in this company who think my job isnt that bad, and then there are the folks who's job I think is cushy enough - so I was wondering how you all feel about your job, especially considering the number of redundancies in recent times.

Scale of 1-10 answers with 10 being the highest, or a simple yes no for questions 4-6:

1. How important do you think your job is? 7
2. How valuable to your company/boss do you think you are? 7 company, 9 Boss
3. How hard do you work on an average weekly basis? Some weeks over 10, some weeks 8 - probably averaging out at 9
4. Do you think your compensation reflects your job description? Yes, at the most basic level of performance
5. Do you think your compensation reflects your effort? Not quite yet, but I think its being addressed
6. If you were your boss, would you be satisfied with you as an employee? Compared to 90% of my peers, I'd hope he'd be delighted.

Was reading about this mans murder earlier this week and just saw this headline - WTF is going on here? Winking at the family as he was led into the courtroom - and the evidence consists of a shoe print?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11338231

Father of Kevin Fletcher charged with his murder   The body of Kevin Fletcher was found in his apartment where he lived alone A 60-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering his son.

Kevin Fletcher, 32, was found dead at his flat in Castle Street, Armagh, on 3 September. Police said he had been stabbed to death in a "frenzied attack".

His father, also called Kevin, of Drumarg Park, Armagh, spoke only to confirm his name and to say he understood the charges.

He was released on bail to appear in court again later this month.

The accused's wife, daughter and other family members were in court, and he winked and smiled at them as he entered the dock.

The court heard the main evidence against him consisted of a shoe print which corresponds to the size and type worn by the accused, but police investigations were ongoing.

General discussion / Whale Wars
August 30, 2010, 10:59:50 PM
A post by iceman the other day "Kill the whales and feed the children" and the fact that this show was on all weekend on Animal Planet got me thinking about this thread. Do any of you watch this TV show, or keep up to date with what these activists do on a daily basis for months at a time? They basically take on a fleet (5-6 ships) of Japanese whaling companies and try to interfere with their whaling on the high seas.

Lunatics and activists. Certainly committed to their cause however.

General discussion / Dental Hygeine/Flossing.
July 20, 2010, 08:00:35 PM
Just back from the 6 month cleaning with the dentist - and I am getting sick to the back teeth (pardon the pun), of being made to feel like I've got gnashers from a third world country.

I've got a small mouth - wisdom teeth are in at the back with no pain but they are telling me I need to get the feckers out because it is leaving me no room in between teeth and leading to plaque build up.

They ask me do I floss - and the honest answer is no. I only floss if theres something stuck in between my teeth that I cant get out. I have started this past week or so, but to be honest I feel like an idiot trying to get the floss in there with big hands and a small gob. I'm never done brushing and rinsing with mouthwash but it's starting to get embarrassing every time I go for a 6 month clean as they ask me if I brush twice a day like I am some school kid eating sweets and chocolate til it rots every tooth in my head.

Do any of you floss your teeth? Do you have any product recommendations that do the same job as flossing but might work better for me?

General discussion / Hiding behind an alias
July 08, 2010, 01:29:41 AM
Its come up a few times on here, and there have been many suggestions about the annonymity of posters - particularly those abusing amateur gaa players. There have also been plenty of incidents with posters, and many people hiding behind aliases while dishing out abuse, or posts that might not necessarily be said face to face.

This article makes it not seem like it would work - but one of the biggest forums in gaming is pushing ahead with it anyway.

World of warcraft ends annonymous forum posting.

World of Warcraft maker to end anonymous forum logins
Page last updated at 18:13 GMT, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:13 UK
E-mail this to a friendPrintable version  It has been 12 years since Blizzard last released a StarCraft title A row has erupted after Blizzard - the publishers of the popular online game World of Warcraft - announced that users on its site forums would have to post under their real names.

The firm say the move is to put an end to heated online arguments and topics started purely to cause trouble.

But users reacted angrily, citing concerns about safety and privacy.

Blizzard said they would start implementing the changes over the next few months.

A post, by Vameras - one of the site community managers - said that the forums had become " a place where flame wars, trolling and other unpleasantness run wild".

"Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven't been connected before," the post continued.

People talk

Blizzard new system - Real ID - means that users will have to post under their real first and last name.

The firm said it will implement the changes over the next few weeks, with the StarCraft II forums - a section dedicated to the forthcoming real time strategy game - making the switch by the end of the month. The World of Warcraft forum will change soon after.

Within five minutes, users had got hold of his telephone number, home address, photographs of him and a ton of other information
Jim Brand

Gamer
In addition to users now posting under their own names, the site will allow others to rate post and interact with other users, creating a "social-networking platform".

"As the way gamers interact with one another continues to evolve, our goal is to ensure Battle.net is equipped to handle the ever-changing social-gaming experience for years to come," the post by Vameras went on.

The online community was swift to respond, with almost a thousand replies in less than 24 hours; the majority of which expressed their displeasure at the move.

"I can't even begin to fathom why you would do this", posted one user, while another wrote that it seems "like someone who likes Facebook came up with it, while being blissfully unaware that an awful lot of people deliberately avoid Facebook".

Real worlds

One World of Warcraft player, Jim Brand, contacted BBC News to say how disappointed he was over the change.

"I have been using the forums for over five years, reporting bugs and trying to be helpful. Now, to have the privilege to help people on the forums I have to reveal my real name; I'm dead against it," he said.

"I work in a charity and deal with governments officials. If they do a search and see I am a gamer, it could affect my employment prospects," he added.

Although most social networking sites have links to a person's real world name, gaming sites have always used anonymous handles.

There have been a few rare cases of online gaming disputes spilling out into the real world, and users are mostly reluctant to reveal personal details, given that video games can sometimes elicit strong emotions.

Mr Brand said that one Blizzard employee posted his real name on the forums, saying that there was no risk to users, and the experiment went drastically wrong.

"Within five minutes, users had got hold of his telephone number, home address, photographs of him and a ton of other information," said Mr Brand

The post and topic has since been removed from the Blizzard forum.

Apparently a prominent player has been arrested in the USA under charges of lewd behaviour.

Tough times ahead for Tyrone.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on a charge related to allegedly exposing himself to a pedestrian near Downtown Reno after chasing him down the street, trying to get him inside his van.

Police said Kevin Hughes was dressed as a woman about 4:30 a.m. Friday when he jumped out of a green van and began chasing another man who was walking on Fourth and Quincy Streets.

At one point, police said Hughes allegedly exposed himself while demanding the man join him inside his van. The man ran from the scene and contacted officers, who soon found Hughes in his vehicle. He was booked into the Washoe County Jail on suspicion of open and gross lewdness. He later posted bail and was released.

I got mad the other day - I continue to buy yoghurts and then never eat them, but every time I am in the grocery store I frigging buy a 12 pack. Between them and lettuce, I continue to buy and throw these things out on a regular basis.

What do you waste your money on that never gets eaten regularly or often thrown out?

I was thinking about this this morning and I think it has to be his goal in the 2005 final. In terms of importance, style and just sheer canavan class I think it may have been his best score.

Judge blasts 'medieval barbarity' of eyeball gouger

Francis Murphy was jailed for 12 years for the attempted murder
A man who gouged out a woman's eye and threw it from an eighth-floor balcony has been jailed for attempted murder.

Francis Murphy, 26, was convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh of using a metal coat hanger to prise out the eye of 27-year-old Natalie Farrell in May.

Judge John Morris QC told Murphy his crime was almost "medieval" in its barbarity and would make a right-thinking person "recoil in horror".

Murphy, from Dundee, was jailed for 12 years.

During the trial, Ms Farrell described the attack at her home in Dundee's Dalfield Court on 26 May this year.

She said she had ended her 10-year relationship with Murphy and had started a new partnership with another man.

However, Murphy turned up at her home, attacked her new partner, then grabbed her and said he was going to take out her eye with a metal hook.

She described how he tried at get his thumb and two fingers into her eye and pull it out.

She said she passed out when Murphy began throttling her.

You were convicted of crimes which are almost medieval in their barbarity, which would make any right-thinking person recoil in horror

Judge John Morris QC
When Ms Farrell regained consciousness her eye was on her cheek hanging by the optic nerve.

Murphy then grabbed it and threw it over an eighth-floor balcony.

Ms Farrell said she only learned that her eye had been pulled out when a friend found it and gave it to paramedics.

Her neighbour, Noel Pittham, told the court that he watched Murphy try to force Ms Farrell over the balcony as he attacked her.

The court also heard from Ms Farrell's friend, Jade Hall, 24, who recounted hitting Murphy with a brush to try to stop him from attacking her friend.

Artificial eye

She said that it was only when she descended the stairs of the block of flats that she and another man found Ms Farrell's eye lying in the street.

Murphy had claimed to police that he could remember nothing of the attack.

Solicitor advocate Iain Paterson, defending, blamed his client's actions on a combination of "tangled emotions", drink and drugs - and said Murphy was struggling to come to terms with what had happened.

"He is going to have to sit in a prison cell for a number of years and take stock of what he has done," said Mr Paterson.

Sentencing Murphy to 12 years, judge John Morris QC told him: "You were convicted of crimes which are almost medieval in their barbarity, which would make any right-thinking person recoil in horror."

Medics are still working with Ms Farrell, who was not in court to hear the sentence, to assess whether she can be given an artificial eye.

Im trying to go off the sugar in the coffee folks. Its frigging tough. Im on about 4 cups a day, and Ive thought about using the sweetners, but they taste awful.

Any tips?
