Post by: Square Ball on January 24, 2007, 09:25:37 PM

My NTL was down all last night as well. I did manage to get through to their help desk who proceeded to tell me the the whole of Norn Iron and Scotland were affected with a network outage and would be back up in a few hours. That was at 6pm and the feckin thing wasn't up all night.

I asked about compensation but they told me the service had to be out for over 24 hours before I was entitled to any.

Richard Branson sends out these fancy flyers about Virgin Media, the new name for NTL. It'd answer him better sorting out his infrastructure and customer services as the tunred the help line off later that night.

What sort of network goes down for this length of time? Iraq Telecom have a better network, trust me.

I ditched NTL TV before Christmas and their broadband this week. I have yet to receive a reply from any of my E-mails, letters and phone messages. They are without a Shadow of a doubt the company with the worst customer services department in the world.

Point of note - NTL in Northern Ireland (& Scotland) are part of the NTL Telewest Group, NTL in the south are part of the UPC Group with Chorus. Not the same company.

There appears to be some fault, possibly in Manchester, as some Freeview channels were also affected by an outage too.

wonder if this is why. apparently there are new boxes that when the frequency is changed it automatically re-calibrates and away you go, allegedly. any info anyone?

What coverage has this system? I  see they're doing TG4 on c877? Is that right? Is it only in Belfast & Dublin?

From gathering information elsewhere on the Interweb, NTL services in Glasgow were also affected around the same time but for an unrelated reason. Apparently the NTL outage yesterday in Belfast was caused by damage to a cable in the Irish Sea, maybe caused by a fishing trawler. Not NTL's fault then.

TG4 was launched in Belfast for digital customers this week.

Without getting too technical, certain channels could get moved to different multiplexes i.e. frequencies to accommodate new services. The EPG on a standard NTL digital receiver will cope with this grand.

I can't get TG4 on my NTL. Can anybody get it in the North? Do I have to ring them about it?

That's balls, it mightn'd of been NTL's fault that the cable was damaged, but no telecoms company worth it's salt has not got resilience built into it's network especially when using under sea fiber optic links.

This latest incident really shows them up to be a mickey mouse outfit.

For whatever reason, the resiliency didn't kick in. Its not an uncommon event, last year many of the Freeview services here were lost when there was a fire at an underground BT network centre in Manchester which carried many of the TV and radio channels over to Divis Mountain.

I rang up and complained the next morning and when I got home last night it was working - whether my call had anything to do with it - I doubt it

Did any of you see an ad/information thing on one of the sky channels where they were encouraging Virgin media users to contact Vrigin media to complain about their proposals to take a lot of the free to air sky channels out of their base package.
I only seen it once and haven't seen it since.

Virgin slams BSkyB in TV dispute
By Andrew Verity
BBC Radio Five Live, Wake Up To Money

Virgin Media was launched amid much fanfare
The head of Virgin Media has accused BSkyB of "bullying" and "arrogance" after talks broke down over showing Sky One and other channels on cable TV.
Virgin Media is to drop the Sky Basics TV package, which includes Sky Travel and Sky Sports News, after Sky raised the fees it charged the cable firm.

Virgin Media was formed from the merger of NTL and Virgin Mobile.

BSkyB said it was "surprised and disappointed" by the comments, and said it stood for "choice and competition".

"Sky has negotiated with NTL/Virgin in good faith and has shown flexibility on price," the broadcaster said in a statement.

"We categorically reject their claims that we have broken off negotiations or that we are seeking to more than double the price of these channels."

BSkyB added that it wanted its basic channels to remain available to Virgin Media subscribers.

Too expensive

Virgin Media chief executive Steve Burch said Sky had been asking "nearly double" the price it had previously charged the cable TV operator to continue showing the Sky channels on its network.

We just weren't going to pay a ridiculous price that would have to be passed on to our customers

Steve Burch, Virgin Media chief executive

Listen to Wake Up To Money

When Mr Burch first refused to pay the asking price, Sky retaliated by showing adverts urging cable TV customers to contact Virgin Media's customer service helpline and demand the cable TV operator show Sky One.

Mr Burch told the Wake Up to Money programme on BBC Radio Five Live: "We frankly believe they never had an intent to reach an agreement with us.

"All their actions - advertising, bullying tactics claiming we didn't care about Sky's basic package - and the price they asked was just so far out of reality, we just believe it was engineered so we wouldn't reach an agreement.

"We sat down and negotiated with them in good faith. Last night we made a final offer.

"They not only rejected it but indicated they were not going to go further with negotiations even though the contract didn't expire until next week. And they indicated to us that they had planned a PR campaign for this weekend to show we wouldn't be carrying Sky Basics any more."

James Healey, senior media analyst at Ernst & Young, said the dispute between the two broadcasters was not surprising.

"Given that Sky has recently substantially reduced the amount it pays for Virgin Media's Flextech channels, Virgin Media was unlikely to accept paying double for the Sky Basic channels," he said.

Other deals

Sky One includes some popular series, such as 24, Lost and new episodes of The Simpsons.

But Virgin Media said it was confident it could compete with Sky if it did not show Sky One.

"We've been going out and signing deals with HBO, Buena Vista and Channel Four for TV shows and video on demand which will more than replace the loss of Sky One," said Mr Burch.

"We just weren't going to pay a ridiculous price that would have to be passed on to our customers."

Last year, Virgin Media's biggest shareholder, Sir Richard Branson, was infuriated by Sky's decision to buy more than £1bn worth of shares in ITV after Virgin Media had declared an interest in buying it.

The Sky shareholding effectively blocked Virgin Media's takeover plans.

now that im being forced to go with the alternative i see the beauty in ntl.
At least you just have to deal with 1 inept customer support system.

Ive been dealing with BT to get the phone line which was a disaster, now i have to go to sky. Was going to use them for tv and internet package (£26) but they are at capacity on that scheme so itll have to be £21 for tv AND £17 for internet if i do go with them.

Got tthis e-mail from Virgin

We like to give our customers the best service we possibly can. That's why we're upgrading your broadband speed from up to 4Mb to up to 10Mb - free. No catch. No strings attached.

An album in a minute
If you thought 4Mb was pretty speedy, wait 'til you try 10Mb. You can download an MP3 music track in under 5 seconds (about the time it took to read that last sentence). A whole album takes less than a minute. And if you put the kettle on, you can download an episode of your favourite soap before it's even boiled - under 5 minutes for half an hour's telly.

Get ready for up to 10Mb
Your upgrade will happen automatically. No forms to fill or phone numbers to ring. And because Virgin Broadband comes via fibre optic cable (not telephone wires) your speed isn't dependent on how close you are to a telephone exchange. It's all part of our continuous investment in bringing you the fastest, easiest-to-use broadband in the UK.

The upgrade will start during February and will roll out region by region until the end of the summer. Keep an eye on the roll out plan at virginmedia.com/evenfaster for the latest news on your switchover date.

Can you make your Virgin Broadband even faster?
Your connection. Using a wireless or USB connection can slow you down. We recommend using the Ethernet cable in your starter kit; it's faster, less temperamental, and easier to install.

Your PC. To get the most from our broadband service, we recommend your computer has certain specifications. You can find out if yours meets the requirements within our frequently asked questions at virginmedia.com/evenfaster.

anyone been upgraded yet?

Same thing happens whenever RTE are broadcasting Lost or Prison Break. There's obviously some legal issue over who has the exclusive rights in the UK.

Was searching for something and came across this from 9 years ago. Seemed a big deal to get from 4 to 10mb. Getting over 100 now and from memory all the upgrades have been free. Only this week went from 70 to 100 again for free.
