When he took over Sunderland they were way down the table. They ended up wining the championship and going up to the premier league where he kept them for a season. Not great after that but to say he has had no success as a manager is just wrong.

No. when he took over Sunderland they had just changed ownership and he was given a ball of money to out-spend the rest of the championship - which is what he did. They then struggled to stay in the premier league and guess what ... he walked out when the heat was on (so unlike our Roy!!).

Get it right.
In fairness to Keane, He took charge of Sunderland 4games into a new season. They were relegated with the lowest points in PL history, the previous season. They had yet to gain a point. He only had a few days to the transfer window closed and signed maybe 5/6 players. Over the course of the promotion season he spent maybe 7/8million. Hardly a lot of money for the Championship. They won the Championship, Keane was Manager of the Year.
That is the only decent thing he achieved in his managerial career. It has been all downhill since then. I don't believe too many other managers could have achieved what he did with SAFC that season.

Magilligan and tohill for me. Individually, neither was in the class of D o,shea or jack, but they were the best midfield partnership I have ever seen, strength, ability, guile and hunger in abundance. If derry could have kept them together for longer I'm sure the oak leafs would have had more of Sam.

If only..

This quote has been attributed to Child regarding the casting of Cruise in One Shot:

"Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way."

Watched "The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" tonight. Not as good as the previous 2 films but finished off the story well and all in all an excellent trilogy.

Are they doing an English/American remake of them . . . it would be the type of movie that could translate well I would think.

What's the order of these films SE? I keep meaning to have a go at them but never quite sure which one I need to watch first!

Dragon Tatoo
Played with Fire
Hornets Nest

Daniel Craig is Blomkvist and Rooney Mara is Lisbeth with Fincher directing in Hollywood version.

On another note, I recently read that they are adapting the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child into films. In the book Jack Reacher is 6ft5, and signed up to play Reacher is..... Tom Cruise - shocking casting!

Some people like to go out of their way to be offended.  I don't use the term 'Darkie' to offend anybody from the black/coloured/whatever society (who actually decides what is a legitimate term to describe this section of the community?).  If I caused any offence to our resident crabbit hoors, I apologise.

In similar terms, if abroad and someone referred to an Irish person as a 'Paddy' would this offend anyone?  It certainly wouldn't offend me. Judging by some of the reaction on here it seems that there would be a few quite badly offended by this term...or maybe they just like to hear themselves complain and decided to have a moan about a similar term used to describe another group of people... ???
Quite an ironic post where the point of the thread is among other things, commenting on condemning rioters/looters for having no respect for other people.

Let's replace any references to Derry with Londonderry e.g. Londonderry city, Londonderry GAA etc. along with sprinklings of there being "no London in Tyrone", then sit back with popcorn to enjoy the inevitable...  8)

Same goes for Nordies / Free Staters / West Brits / Tyrone inbreds  :P etc.

Tyrone have enjoyed a longer stint at the top than any other team I can think of, unless you consider Kerry 1975-86 as one team; I would say it was two: 75-81 and 84-86. I've been saying since 2008 that Tyrone's demise was overdue based on the average life span of a top team, which is about five years. They've proven me wrong until now.

No county produces a continuous challenge for top honours. Even Kerry, though they are the closest we have to a permanent challenger for titles, don't do it in a continuous stream. A new Kerry team arrives, thrives for a few years and fades. 1958-62; 1969-72; 1975-82; 1984-86; 1997-2000; 2004-?

So this Tyrone group has set a new standard for longevity. We don't even know they're finished yet.

Just catching up on this thread.

Hardy if you are going to split the Kerry team with 75-82 and 84-86, then surely the Tyrone dominance should currently be 2003 - 2008, anything after this point should be considered separate from that great team.

From a Derry point of view, I can remember off the top of my head, 92 final v Donegal, 93 final v Donegal, 95 semi-final v Tyrone, 96 semi-final v Tyrone, 97 semi-final v Tyrone and final Cavan, 98 final v Donegal, 99 semifinal v Armagh, think we might have played Monaghan as well in 97 or 98, definitely remember getting a lucky draw against the one year.

That's at least nine games I reckon
1990 semi v donegal

I think monaghan draw was 93 and the game was in blayney.

Nah 93 the game was in Clones and we beat them easy!

The drawn Monaghan game was possible 1992 in Blayney? 9 Points up at Half Time 10-1 possibly and Monaghan scored 3 goals in the second half only for a last minute Bateson goal saved us! Tanked them in the Replay then I think.

Derry Monaghan in 93 was casement(definitely as I was there). It ended up, I think, 19-11 but wasn't until Joe Brolly and someone else (cant mind who) came on that Derry started to pull away.

I think 92 was the draw but wasn't clones(wasn't at it) and the replay was in celtic park.(was at it) Stephen McGinnity hat trick in initial game if I remember rightly.

1992 - Played Monaghan in 'Blayney and Celtic Park - I think McGinnity got two in the first game with McCarron grabbing a goal as well.

1993 - Semi-final - Casement. Derry pulled away in the second half to win easy. Brian McCormack and Joe Brolly came off the bench to make a big difference.

Pretty sure we played Armagh in Clones in '98 as well

I noticed he called Mark Lynch by the name Kevin Lynch on two occasions

"Danny Devlin will happily pull the pints tonight if Derry get to an Ulster Final"

Pure nonsense.
