Title: Lawn mowers
Post by: trueblue1234 on March 14, 2016, 04:47:50 PM
Anyone any good advice for brands of Ride on Lawn mowers? What to avoid? Also does anyone know anywhere in NI that might do good 2nd hand ones?

If you've a few quid and a decent quality, level lawn the cylinder mowers are supposed to be much better than the typical rotary types.

Giving a dry week and to be honest i am tempted to run the mower of the lawn as there was a right bit of growth early winter.
I suppose frost would be still the only thing that would be stopping me from doing this but i have noticed some people have cut there lawns already. Anybody else considering it.

ya i think I'm going to cut it this evening, its a mess, I'm not so worried about the frost, but I'll have to see if the ground is dry enough if its too wet the mower will  leave ruts.

I've a mount field and it's fine but it's important to get it services annually. Go for the type that blows the grass direct to the grass box rather than the type that has the tube feed along the side if you understand me.

1st cut done today. Have a ride on and it makes mowing the lawn enjoyable.
Go for a hydrostatic one as they are the way to go.
Bought a new one 9 years ago and its as good as the day I bought it.
Buy new if you can.

Couldn't find an image of mine, but it's similar to this.

18 HP and 102" cut, twin blade. Rear discharge and a pull of the handle empties the box.

I dump the grass on a bit of old ground and never have to get off the mower from start to finish.

I found with using the ride on that the grass need to be bone dry otherwise you are having to take the box off to clear inside. But they are some job and I look forward to cutting the grass. Something I didn't do with the petrol mower.

The deal in our house is I go round the edge of the garden with a push mower to make it easier for the young lad to follow behind with the ride on. It's the only exercise I get

Cheers for the advise. Was looking at this one, https://www.gumtree.com/p/lawnmowers-trimmers/greenhill-42-ride-on-lawnmower-lawn-mower/1157771225

But not familiar with Greenhill brand? anyone any experience of them? What should be the main pointers I'm looking for? Hydrostatic, 3 in 1 (How useful is that here? Does it not require it to be really dry to mulch?) etc?

Also any brands to completely avoid? There seems to be a lot of brands out there at the minute.

That's a fine looking mower, and it should last you a long time.

They are also fantastic for collecting leaves in the autumn if you have many tress about !!

Nice mower.
I miss cutting grass. I could cut what I have now with a scissors, but back in the day when I lived at home it could take 2 hours to get the grass cut. Always loved doing it.
The aul fella has a ride on mower now and gets it all done in a half an hour these days.

This man was being plagued by this wife.
"Cut the grass, its up to the window"
he replied, let the guy in the flat downstairs do it.

Would 15 HP be good enough for a lawn with a decent slope? No mountain by any stretch but a decent in line.

15 HP would be the least you would want for an incline!

A rotary mower is fine for your lawn at home and rough grass but for a football pitch thats in good order you should be buying a cylinder mower.

I was thinking it was low. Had been looking at a 20HP one but there's a good offer on the 15HP one so was tempted to drop down if I thought it could manage it OK. Would 15 be too low do you think?

I'd say it depends on the size of the jockey!!

I'm going to need a bigger boat!!

Anyone any experience of Cub Cadet? I've a good price on the below yoke that seems to have everything I want.

When I was buying I was advised to go for a least 15HP. Mine is 17HP and very strong up hills.
