Hurling Discussion / Re: NHL 2013
March 31, 2013, 09:30:38 PM
Galway deserved the win today. Davy Glennon was very good for them. Joe Canning blew hot and cold. Waterford improved in 2nd half after only scoring 3 points in first half. Maurice Shanahan was top scorer but we needed a goal to come back and didn't have many chances as the Galway defence stood firm. The referee Anthony Stapleton of Laois was terrible and failed to award frees for blatant fouls which annoyed the crowd and didn't show Iarla Tannian a yellow card for chopping down on a Waterford players hand. He yellow carded Seamus Prendergast only for wrestling over a hurley with a Galway defender soon after. I saw some of the incidents again on tv afterwards and Galway also had bad decisions against them in 2nd half.
Overall a decent league for Waterford and better than expected and some new young players are doing well so we have to be happy enough despite missing out on semi final place after todays results.

It should be an exciting day tomorrow and the calculators could be out but Waterfod know a win will guarantee them top spot in the league with the winners of the other 2 games to join them in the semis. If there are draws then the calculators will be needed or does it go on head to head record? There should be good crowds at all games with something to play for.

Great win for Waterford yesterday. 5 points down with Seamus Callanan scoring points for fun it looked like Tipp would win comfortably but Waterford snatched a win with 6 points in a row. The bitterly cold conditions meant only the really committed fans were there and there was great celebrations with Dillon and Moran scored at the end.

Waterford played well for 50 minutes or so today but Kilkenny got on top near the end. 2 soft goals cost us dearly and we over did the short puck out and passing. It's still been a decent start to the league.

It certainly is competitive, every game counts. I'm happy enough with Waterford's start to the league. We were written off as usual before league started but 3 points from 4 with a fairly young team is a good return.

Keith Andrews was on Today fm at the weekend and kept saying he played Gah as a youngster. Its more of a Dublin thing I'd say.

General discussion / Re: travel insurance for over 65's

I wouldn't go without travel insurance going to the USA. The 65000 or 100000 that health insurance policy covers mightn't last long if someone had a serious illness or accident over there and had to spend a good bit of time in hospital.

Eamonn Sweeney had a go at Niall Moyna as well over his recent comments on the back page of Sunday Independent sports section yesterday. Some people in the GAA think rules should apply only if doesn't affect them.

Hurling Discussion / Re: John Mullane retires.
January 18, 2013, 03:25:08 PM
It won't be the same watching Waterford without John Mullane. it's nice to see the tributes from people from other counties for him and he was a popular player for his skill and passion. He was one of the top forwards in the game for over a decade and was one of the leading players in the most successful Waterford team since the late 50/early 60's.
The level of physical and mental commitment to inter county Gaa is seeing players retire earlier than usual. Best wishes to John in the future and he will be missed this year.

GAA Discussion / Re: Exprimental Football Rules

The game has to adapt as fitness, coaching and preparation has changed hugely in recent years.
Players know refs are not likely to had out yellow or red cards much as it stands so will push rules to the limit so action had to be taken as football was becoming more like a combination of basketball, rugby and wrestling the way it has gone in recent years. Skilful players should be rewarded and protected as fans want to see more exciting games.

Great game yesterday. Well done to both teams for such a high quality game in late November.
The ref didn't do De La Salle any favours but Thurles had good subs to bring on to get some vital late scores and deserved it. Jake Dillon was excellent for De La Salle.

I went to see Argo Wednesday night. Now that is a good film about the rescue of American hostages in Iran around 1980 and the interesting plan they came out with to try get them out without being caught by the Iranians. Ben Affleck starred in it and directed it.
I agree with most of the commetns about Skyfall. Too much hype about it and wasn't as good as some reviews made out.

Is it the first time the Munster champions didn't get an All Star?

Pat McEnaney is right. Referreeing became too lenient in recent years in hurling. Brian Cody is one of the biggest critics of the sin bin and stricter refereeing and red cards in inter county hurling are almost non existent now and two of his players have unfortunately picked up serious injuries. It was ridiculous to see what went on in the Tipp Kilkenny semi final without anyone being sent off or disciplined after the game. Padraic Maher committed a number of yellow and one red card offence and somehow lasted the entire game but he wasn't the only one at it. The referees and Gaa authorities will have to get stricter next year.

De La Salle had a handy win over Dungarvan in Waterford SHC final yesterday. 1-21 to 0-11 was final score. There a big home support for Dungarvan at Fraher Field but DLS were too strong.
Congratulations to my own club Butlerstown who won the junior hurling final curtain raiser v Geraldines by 2-11 to 0-5. It's the first county title since 1971 for the club.
