General discussion / Re: Price of a Pint
January 18, 2023, 02:59:10 PM
Went into Richard Corrigan's new place 'The Park Cafe' in Ballsbridge last week. A pint at the bar was 7.81 - when I got the receipt the actual price was 7.10 and a 'discretionary service charge' of 10% had been added. If it was discretionary I'd like to have been asked about it before I had to pay it

Would Irelands call be played before the match?

Maybe have Snow Patrol and/or The Saw Doctors come up with something new?

Maybe 'To win just once'

A friend of mine from Clonoe was touring round Kerry and went into Pat's pub in Templenoe about 15 years ago. Pat was behind the bar and when he found out he was from Clonoe he asked him if he knew Kevin McCabe. Pat then said that 'Kevin was the best .............{long pause}  looking footballer he ever played against'.

Didn't they use to carry him into the Omagh GAA in a coffin as part of the act.... too young to know but heard the stories! RIP Rock Steawart
that's true - he was a great showman

Peter Canavan
Frank McGuigan
Sean Cavanagh
Iggy Jones

Last one is a tough one, possibly one of Stephen O'Neill, Eugene McKenna, Brian Dooher, Conor Gormley or Phillip Jordan.
Eugene McKenna would get my vote

Definitely Eugene McKenna for me. I have never seen another midfielder since who could hang for a ball like him. When he did it their would be a deep intake of breath from the crowd. I remember being at a league game in Newcastle and he went crazy in the last ten minutes of the game and caught everything. I was chatting to Liam Grugan (who was playing that day) after the game that night and he said he went up for kick out and he felt a knee on his shoulder which was Eugene.

That's a complicated read but it appears he may have put some of his wealth offshore before becoming president. I'm not sure that shows that he's an extreme right winger which is what some of the posts on here are inferring.

Like he isn't rounding up his own citizens and putting them in concentration camps and torturing them or poisoning them then, which is what the narrative that he's as bad as Putin would suggest.

that's what my reading of it is as well - the money looks like it came from his acting career and he's not the first entertainer to hide his money from the local taxman - not the best look if you decide to suddenly become a politician. I haven't seen anything showing a rabid right winger as being alluded to on this discussion. At the end of the day if he had all this money stashed away he could have ran to the US when offered the chance instead of staying in Kiev

McQuillan specifically walked into Morgan prior to the penalty being taken and spoke to him, presumably to tell him to remain on his line so its very curious that the penalty was not retaken. Three officials standing within 10 metres of it and they can't even get that right.

This is the most blatant error of all.
It's a hard one to call at the time. i watched it a few times and when O'Donoghue does his stutter step Morgan is still on the line. By the time he kicks it he's 2 foot off so technically it should be retaken but I'd have an issue with the stutter step in it's being done to make the goalie make a move.

GAA Discussion / Re: All Ireland final tickets thread
September 07, 2021, 02:43:51 PM
I've never seen tickets so tight. I'm a Tyrone man residing in Kildare. I'm secretary of the youth section of our club, manage 1 team and give a dig out for 2 others. 10 tickets where fed out to the Kildare clubs. A draw was done and 5 clubs got 2 tickets each. Still a member at home but had no joy there. Going to head up to Dublin anyway. As a Mayo man in the estate said to me it's best to win or lose amongst your own. At least the people around you will understand what your feeling.

Your commute is two hours each way?
I live in Newbridge and work in Ballsbridge - leave the house at 7 to drive to the railway station - get 7.20 train to Grand Canal Dock - get into work about 08:40. Leave at 5 and get home at 6:50 so essentially 12 hours away from home.
I'd say you're happy enough wfh!
Some of the commutes into our place are crazy - they-re 4-5 people doing the same as me from Newbridge. At least we all had seats on the train since it starts in Newbridge. It's standing room only from the next station in Sallins. There was one lady in our Dept coming in daily from Edenderry and another fellow coming in from Virginia

Our place is talking about going back in for 3 days a week. Can't say I'm looking forward to it. I had the nicest balance at home - 8 hours work, 8 hours for myself and the family and 8 hours sleep. I found things to be more productive working from home. The travel to work will now make that (12-4-8). The departments in our office were all grouped together and it created a laager like mentality in some areas which meant it was hard to progress work sometimes. It's been far easier to get in contact with people and have the 2 min discussion you might need using Teams. They are also talking of hot desking which I think will remove one of the main benefits of the office which is knowing where the person you need is actually sitting. It means that you're probably going to end up using Teams even if the person is in the same block.

Had my first at 42 and then twins at 45. The twins were actually easier that the first one for me. Probably due to the fact that I knew what to expect and that I was able to work from home. We split the twins at night so that I fed and slept with one in a room downstairs and my wife had the other boy upstairs. Whenever I hear of someone expecting twins I love to tell them of the day that I changed 18 nappies and 4 baby grows in the one day. That was one shitty day.

Aged 53 myself. In Feb had the hiccups for a week so got the full checkup done. Thankfully all was well but when I was in for the colonoscopy I was chatting to fellow in the next bed who told me that he had it done every 3 years since his father died with bowel cancer. I'd advise anybody who hits 50 to get a full MOT done.

Tyrone / Re: Tyrone County Football and Hurling

I thought the line was worse in the minor match. We got absolutely destroyed on kick outs. The only plan was to land it on top of McGleenan. Kerry did not want to kick it long and we handed them every kick out by having a sweeper.
