Not one bit surprised Junior, managers are like sheep, what works for one they all will try, with no regard for the future health of the player or the fact that all players are not teachers or work in an office. Having said that the problem could be down to under recovery rather than over training.

True, I think under recovery is the problem in the weaker counties where managers are depending on a few top players to carry the team whereas in the stronger counties lads are training their butts off to clinch a place in the team and disregarding their own health in the process..

Work underway on new terraces at O'Moore Park, which is to be upgraded to 25 thousand capacity

O'Moore Park set for €1m upgrade
21 May 2015

O’Moore Park is to receive a €1 million makeover in a bid to attract more high-profile games to Laois GAA headquarters.

Works have already started on the upgrade which is in response to a recent Health and Safety report which capped the Portlaoise venue’s capacity at just 18,000. The improvements will see the capacity restored to about 25,000.

According to Midlands 103, the three terraces at the ground will have all stairwells and handrails replaced, a new walkway and support wall is to be built behind the main terrace, the toilets at the Abbeyleix Road end have been demolished and will be rebuilt, while all other toilet blocks in the stadium are to be refurbished.

A new press box will also be constructed on the main terrace.

Laois GAA has received €800,000 from Central Council, with the remainder of the project to be funded by Leinster Council. The project will take 22 weeks to complete.

It's a great article and it might even work, given half a chance. I've never agreed with professionalism in the GAA but if transfers of players could be kept out of it then I think I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Junior
I've posted on this a few times before and I still think the only way this will work is to move away from the " County" model towards a number of super clubs based around major population areas.
The traditional club(rural) as we know it would continue more or less as it is today all amateur.
The elite player would however move/ transfer to the super clubs much like what happened in Rugby.

We're a bit away from this scenario yet but the gap between the top and 3or 4 was never more apparent and growing, something has to give.

Rugby was in this same situation 20 years ago and many said at the time it will never happen but happen it did and almost overnight.

I really wish everyone would stop talking about playing Dublin before they play Wicklow. They're really lining themselves up for a nasty fall....

1 : “It would have been a big event, the All-Ireland champions coming down to wherever it is, Wicklow or Laois. It’s huge and should be huge."

2 : “But two teams now have to travel for no reason and we’re supposed to have a home game — or Wicklow are supposed to have a home game."

Woops - I'd take that back if I was you, Giovanni. Looks like Begley was very respectful - you were just too lazy to read the article.

Colm Begley was asked what did he make of the decision to play Dublin in KK if Laois beat Wicklow. He gave an answer to the effect of "If Wicklow win or if Laois win, it would have been nice to play in their prospective back yards."

You're clearly wrong. He has the right to answer that question (why should he not) and he did so very respectfully.

Just seeing this now. I'd love to know how much of a structure Dublin had before the money started rolling in. I suspect that all they had was a plan and Croke Park jumped at it. The fact is that Croker sees a block of Dublin supporters (1.5m of them) as a single unit of customers and compares that to the 33 other teams, none of whom come close to those sort of numbers. Offaly wins an All Ireland, 80,000 people happy. Dublin wins, it's 1.5m.

Dublin came up with a plan (or were told to), the plan is funded, then all and sundry justify the funding. Volunteerism? How many in clubs around Laois are not volunteers. They hardly reinvented the wheel there.

I'd love to see the funding stopped and see how Dublin fares after. This is the end justifying the means. At this stage, the rest of the country is on catch-up. GAA in Dublin is sexy, because winning is sexy. If the GAA are not careful, we'll have such a boring championship because Dublin will keep winning. When Croker kills the golden goose, who will answer for that?

Having said all that, the CB have to step up to the plate now. We do have (4/5) GDOs that my club has not seen in about three years. Apart from the odd match for their own club or Cul Camp weeks, I'd say nearly the entire CB has not been out to our club in that time. There's no proactive thinking at all. They get a reasonable idea (eg OMP Experience night) and run it until people are bored of it.

Just one question...Exactly who's bored of the experience night....can't be the kids cos it should be new kids coming through at least every 2 years so therefore it must be the adult mentors/club officials. That's part of the underage problem. Adults get bored and stale. Instead of renewing and reinvigorating the whole set up it eventually just fades off and kids suffer. It's not entirely the adults fault. They should be helped to maintain their interest and upskill themselves. Hopefully the likiof these new pathway workshops will be the start of that

Just to clear this up, this is what you posted Don... You said " Contract negotiations still ongoing"

Will Zac not be making his annual appearance for Portlaoise this year ??
Not coming home this year.
Zach is home since last Friday
Change of plan so. Contract negotiations still ongoing. Should make it interesting for Sunday.

NFL DIVISION 3

Meaney and Lillis add to Laois injury woes ahead of clash with Tipperary
Experienced duo added to lengthy list of absentees

Rory Delaney
21 Feb 2017

Laois senior footballers have been dealt yet more misfortune on the injury front as both Kevin Meaney and Kieran Lillis look set to miss this Saturday's game against Tipperary in O'Moore Park.
Meaney picked up an injury in the loss to Armagh last weekend, and it has not responded to treatment as well as was hoped. Kieran Lillis suffered a hamstring injury in training last week, and he too looks set to miss the game with Tipp.
They join an ever-increasing list of absentees for manager Peter Creedon. The Cork man revealed to the Leinster Express yesterday that Brendan Quigley was still six weeks away from action, with John O'Loughlin 'touch and go' to feature this weekend. The game against Sligo in Round 4 is more likely to see his return.

Gary Walsh, who missed the Armagh game with a hamstring injury, will hopefully be part of the panel for Saturday night, while Evan O'Carroll could also make the subs bench, after he played for Crettyard Gaels in the Kelly Cup over the weekend.
Damien O'Connor has also returned to training after his collar bone injury, but he has not yet been cleared to take part in any contact sessions. Mark Timmons also remains on the long-term injury list after hip surgery.

Laois will be looking to carry the good form shown in the closing stages of the win over Armagh into this Saturday's clash with Tipperary. Division 3 is already shaping up to be as tight as everyone expected, with just two points separating Sligo in second with Armagh in seventh.
Throw in this Saturday night is at 7pm, with the game also live on Eir Sport.

I'm glad to see Laois GAA distancing themselves from these comments. GAA in Laois at juvenile level has been in decline when with the population growth the county has witnessed in last decade or more it should really be the opposite. Maybe Laois county board should look at structures they have in place at present and identify how they are promoting and developing football and hurling in the county. If you make a sport appealing to children at a young age and get them involved through their schools and clubs then they will want to play. Blaming the influence of other sports for me is a lazy excuse. Naturally, you will lose a few talented players to other sports when they get to a certain age but that has always been the case. However, if lads see poor structures, little chance for success etc. then you are likely to lose even more than you should.

I'm in two minds . On one hand it will definetly add and create a different kind of excitement to the summer . On the other hand it would be unlikely for counties such as Tipp to reach an All Ireland Semi Final again given the Super 8 set-up . Lots more pros and cons but maybe it's worth a go . A shake up is needed .

One thing from Brolly's article that's worth noting is the extra revenue from TV, tickets and sponsorship that this will generate.
We all know how the GAA works, if they fall upon something that boosts the coffers, that something is here to stay.
If this is given 3 years the GAA are then able to show the massive increase in revenue it produced, and then what they are particularly good at is showing us how we all benefitted from this money "trickling down". If it get's in, it's here far beyond the 3 years.

I don't see anything it it except giving more chances to the stronger status quo and reducing the chances of those trying to catch up.
Oh, and the extra money!

Creedon: we'll shake hands after
22 February 2017

There will be no room for sentiment when Peter Creedon sends his Laois players out on to the O'Moore Park field for Saturday night's Division 3 encounter against his former Tipperary charges.
The Cork native laid the foundations for the Premier County's run to last year's All-Ireland SFC semi-final during his spells as minor, U-21 and senior manager.
“I've worked with all of the Tipp players, many of them for nearly ten years, so they'll be trying to get one over on me and I'll be trying to get one over on them,” he remarked to The Irish Independent.
“We'll go at it hard for the match and then shake hands after.
“I wasn't one bit surprised at Tipp's emergence, they'd been knocking on the door in previous years. There's huge talent within that squad, they'll be hoping to push on and will be a huge challenge on Saturday night.
"I'd be hoping Tipp will do very well in the league and push on in the Munster Championship but on Saturday night I'll be planning the best performance for Laois.”
Creedon is planning without the services of Kevin Meaney and Kieran Lillis who both picked up knocks in recent weeks while midfielder Brendan Quigley is not set to return for another six weeks at least.

If my memory is correct didnt Kildare fall foul of a similar situation a few years back (Ironically against Sligo). And Sligo's manager is Niall Carew who was involved with Kildare at the time. Or was it Sligo who fell foul ????

I think the Kildare subs controversy was against Offaly back in 2006.

I think the Kildare subs controversy was against Offaly back in 2006.

Twice in two consecutive years.

The first time was the first game of the 2002 league which was Micko's last year. Kildare and Sligo drew in Newbridge in the first game of the campaign. It was the first year of the blood sub rule which there was some confusion over. Kildare used six subs and Sligo were awarded the points.

The following year Kildare beat Sligo in Markievicz Park by a point. Kildare hadn't listed their substitutes on the teamsheet and Sligo objected. The game was replayed at the end of the league which Sligo then won and Kildare were relegated.

Carew wouldn't have been involved in either year.

What a player he was at his peak, a great servant to his club and county. He would be one off the Leinster winning team that would make an all time great laois team IMO (alongside Tom Kelly and Joe Higgins).
My main memory of him was the 2005 Leinster final when although they lost they lost the fact that they should have won was due mainly to Ross. I had the perfect view a couple rows from the front of the upper Hogan that day, he was telling players to get out of the way and make room for him, as he would sprint from one side of the pitch to the other to win possession and take on the Dublin's defence, demanding the ball off his team mates when Laois needed it most, scoring points, setting up team mates and winning frees. He was incredible to watch.
The other memory is of watching Arles Kilcruise play in their first Leinster championship game  on TG4 24 hours after winning their first county title (a disgrace of course), we saw the professionalism of all the Arles players that day but in particular Chris Conway and Ross. The fact the they won was incredible.

We've had some fantastic forwards during my time watching Laois  ( 50  years  ;D) some with outstanding natural talent  and much acclaimed.
But for me, for his ability ( he must be our all time highest scorer no) his determination his longevity and most of all for his attitude Ross would be by far the best Laois forward I have seen.

It would be great to keep him involved in years to come. What a great attitude he has, toss up between him and Cahir Healy as most committed, dedicated Laois GAA player. Would love to see him in underage development - he speaks very well and has time for everyone. He's really someone to look up to in Laois GAA.

He should be brought in as a GDO alongside Colm Begley even if it means moving someone elsewhere. The kids really look up to him and he has a great work ethic.

Agree but dont hold your breadth. The present set up is embedded and will take a lot of changes at the top for that to happen. The GDAs as they stand have been a total failure ( Begley, a recent addition is not included in that opinion).

It was disappointing to see Laois u16s getting a bad beating from Meath in the Gerry Reilly Cup at the weekend. A reflection on the under age coaching in the county again?

I thought this team was supposed to be fairly good.

think the 17s are better than the 16s. To be fair the 16s won their 2 previous games in that competition.

They aren't looking to fund a laois Gda,they are looking to fund their OWN one,the 2 clubs are going to fund a GDA to work exclusively within the 2 clubs, they are also looking to offer considerably above the €28k in order to find the right candidate.
