General discussion / Ryan Tubridy
February 05, 2012, 02:55:48 PM
I happened to hear the start of the Ryan Tubridy Show on Thursday morning  He started by informing his listeners that he had learned that 44 families per day are having their electricity cut off. He then invited any listeners who have had their electricity cut off to give him a ring. Now I'm no genius but I'd guess that if you'd had the electricity cut off you probably wouldn't be able to listen to the radio and if you were listening the chances are that if you'd had the electricity cut off you'd also have had the phone cut off 3 months earlier.

General discussion / Clarkson does it again
December 05, 2011, 09:20:00 PM
I see David Cameron's buddy has put his size 10s in it again:

Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has faced a storm of protest from mental health charities after he branded people who throw themselves under trains as "selfish".

The 51-year-old, who was forced to apologise earlier this week after saying all striking workers should be shot, was embroiled in further controversy after he reiterated his view that those who commit suicide on railway lines cause "immense" disruption for commuters.

Charities said his comments were "tasteless" and accused him of trivialising the subject of suicide.

In his column in The Sun newspaper, Clarkson said: "I have the deepest sympathy for anyone whose life is so mangled and messed up that they believe death's icy embrace will be better. However, every year around 200 people decide that the best way to go is by hurling themselves in front of a speeding train. In some ways they are right. This method has a 90% success rate and it's extremely quick.

"However, it is a very selfish way to go because the disruption it causes is immense. And think what it's like for the poor train driver who sees you lying on the line and can do absolutely nothing to avoid a collision."

Later in the article the presenter referred to those who choose to jump in front of trains as "Johnny Suicide" and argues that following a death, trains should carry on their journeys as soon as possible.

He added: "The train cannot be removed nor the line re-opened until all of the victim's body has been recovered. And sometimes the head can be half a mile away from the feet. Change the driver, pick up the big bits of what's left of the victim, get the train moving as quickly as possible and let foxy woxy and the birds nibble away at the smaller, gooey parts that are far away or hard to find."

A man has been shot dead by an off-duty police officer during a suspected robbery at a petrol station .

The PSNI said it happened on the Albertbridge Road in Belfast at 1905 GMT on Thursday.

It is believed the dead man was armed with a knife and was attempting to rob the the filling station. Nobody else was injured.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Initial enquiries suggest that an off-duty officer discharged his firearm.

I see David Trimble is now sporting a beard. It makes him look a ringer for Captain Redbeard Rum (aka Tom Baker) who appeared in Blackadder II to take Lord Edmund Blackadder on a sailing trip round the Cape of Good Hope

General discussion / Tom Elliott new UUP Leader
September 22, 2010, 11:47:23 PM
Seems the UUP has once again pushed the self destruct button.

' The Ulster Unionist Party has picked Tom Elliott as its new leader.

Mr Elliott, 46, who represents Fermanagh and South Tyrone, saw off the challenge of Lagan Valley MLA Basil McCrea by 643 votes to 294.

Sir Reg Empey had announced he would quit as Ulster Unionist leader in the aftermath of a disastrous general election which left it with no MPs.

Many of the party's senior figures, including all but one of its MLAs, had declared their backing for Mr Elliott.

Mr Elliott said his party needed to be united and build ahead of next year's assembly elections.

"What I want for the Ulster Unionist Party is the very same thing I want for Northern Ireland; I want people with a settled mindset to live in comfort and peace within this province and within the union," he said.

Mr Elliott was seen as the "establishment" candidate, with his background as a senior Orangeman and former UDR soldier, while McCrea had hoped to secure enough votes from rank-and-file members, positioning himself as a moderniser.

In the past decade, the UUP has gone from having 10 MPs to none.

One of the first tasks for Mr Elliott will be healing any rifts within the party.

He will also have to set about winning back voters from the DUP and attracting unionists who no longer vote at all. '

I have a friend who'll be in Ballywalter on Sunday. Has anyone any idea if there would be a pub in the village where he could watch the game?

Fans of Hugo Duncan, who can't get enough of the 'wee man from Strabane', are being offered another way to get their daily fix.

If listening to his radio show is not enough, they can listen to Uncle Hugo making sure they don't take any wrong turns while driving.

From Friday, the BBC Radio Ulster presenter's unique voice can be downloaded onto Tom Tom or Garmin SatNav devices.

Fans of Hugo can enjoy being called eejits when they take a wrong turn and being advised not to drive over the top of roundabouts among other things.

And of course, at the end of their journey they will be greeted with an hilarious "We're here! Skiddly-aye-dee-diddle-deddle-dum".

Step by step instructions on how to download Hugo's voice to SatNav devices can be found online as well as troubleshooting advice and further information.

"I go around the country and do 60,000 or 70,000 miles a year, so I nearly know every corner on the road," Hugo said.

"I was asked to get involved to be a voice for Tom Tom and Garmin and I thought I would get involved and it was great fun doing it.

"There was lots of directions I gave that couldn't be put on at all."

"You had to stick strictly to the distances and the turn rights and turn lefts, but there were a few wee things I added on myself."

He added: "It's not like me to tell people where to go, but sure at least I'm not telling anyone to get lost.

"I know a lot of people listen to the show on the road, so now they can get some extra Uncle Hugo to help them along on those long journeys. Just pretend I'm in the car with you."

Just back from the All Ireland Fleadh in Cavan. Have been to quite a few but this one was the best yet. Full marks to the people of Cavan Town. They had a hard act to follow after the last 3 great Fleadhs in Tullamore but they were up for it big time. Roll on Cavan 2011
