The bulk of preparation for volunteers is done on the three training weekends, the other main thing is fundraising the amount but that can be done in the UK of course. If you can make it to all or almost all of the weekends you should be grand for time off work.
The Programme itself lasts 10 weeks, around June 8-August 20 (rough dates).
You can indicate your preference between India and Kenya on the Application Form, Suas will take it into account but there is no definite guarantee you'll get the exact placement you want. They focus on building suitable teams of volunteers who work well together as well as looking at what they will bring to the Programme. If you have a particular interest in one of the countries or reason for favouring it you can always mention that in the interview. (I did, I wanted to go to India and was placed there, but of course I can't promise you the same thing! ).
