Can anyone recommend a decent place to stay in Paris that won't break the bank? Fairly central, safe area. As long as it's close to a metro is the main thing.

Searching on the net there seems to be a lot of crappy hotels in Paris.

Stayed at this hotel  http://www.hotelclunysquare.com/

Very central, not too dear, rooms of course are small but very clean

Holiday Inn, Place de la Republique was fine for me in January - metro station nearby, a few restaurants beside, and about twenty minutes' walk down to the Seine.  About €100 per night for a big room.

Me and the missus stayed in Hotel Splendid Etoile in this very room about 4 years ago and it was about €100 a night for the room at that stage.

It's obviously by the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs Elysees. It's a fair jaunt down to Montmartre etc. where a lot the best reasonably priced restaurants etc. would be it's negative point. However it is ranked 4th out of 1727 hotels on Tripadvisor so can't be that bad!

Not a bad view!!!

Try this one. I found it to be an excellent site with loads of cheaper hotels

stayed there in 2001 - think it was newly opened.
Loved the hotel and quite liked the area - though it had a rep as being rough/dodgy

close to metro
not too close to the champs elysees/eiffel tower, but I'd still go back there...

Went just before Xmas there with the ex, stayed in Montmarte was cheap as chips but a bit out of the way though didn't really matter cuz the metro was about thirty seconds walk and got you right in champs elysees within five to ten mins.

Restaurants an all round montmartre were cheap as you'll get, also was only two minutes walk away from tje Sacre Coeur cathedral, some spot.

Though some bits of montmartre seemed dodgy enough, lots of immigrants an all!!
