milltown row

Just watched Joe Canning hit a penalty, he scored twenty one yard free earlier in the game, but he hit this thing like a bullet from a gun. is he the best at penalties?

Donnellys Hollow

Fitzhenry used to be deadly from the 21. Paul Flynn was fairly lethal with them as well.
There's Seán Brady going in, what dya think Seán?

Canning hit another cracker there, had the cheek to look over to his line and indicate for a point before riffling it to the net again

Awesome power. I would not like to get in the way!
Mayo for Sam! Just don't ask me for a year

didlyi

He scored 4-7 today and still lost in a magnificent game

slow corner back

Seamus ( Mushy ) McMullan of Dunloy and Antrim was great at penalties back in the day more recently Fitzhenry as someone else said was class also but JC can certainly thump them.

Keepers should not count as they are hitting it with a keepers stick and less chance of mishitting it
"When it's too tough for them, it's just right for us"

Donnellys Hollow

DJ actually missed a few important penalties down the years. One against Offaly in the 1998 AIF springs to mind.

Wasn''t there some boy way, way back who lifted ball up into the air and did a 360 degree turn and hit it as he came back down. Apparently it was impossible to save, given the force generated by the turn and the fact that he was closer in than normal by vitrue of the turn.

Does anybody know anything about this ?? There was a term for it, if I can remember correctly.

amazing logic there given how commonplace it is in inter-county games for penalty takers to miss the ball.

its actually the complete opposite with keepers. The wider bas makes it harder to find the sweet spot on the hurl. So, if anything its even harder to get the same power you would from a normal outfield stick. With Damien Fitz, his hurls were never all that big. Davy's were yet he still had a lovely strike on him. Other than those 2 (in inter-county terms anyway) its not that common to see the keeper go forward to take the penalty. Murray took one for Limerick this year but it was poorly struck (still went in though).

But, to suggest that a keeper has some kind of unfair advantage because of the stick? Thats just wrong.

AZOffaly

Murray from Limerick has an awful belt of a sliothar when he catches it. He fires it shoulder/head high and dares them to save it. Most times they don't.

DJ wasn't so much power but more the fact that by time he struck the ball he was a good few yards closer to the goal

Yep. Deccie Ryan was a great one for that too.
