With Leicester defying odds of 5000/1 to be leading the Premier League, just wondering if there's been many long odds winners in GAA (>100/1)?
Maybe Laois 1915 or Galway 1923 in the hurling.
Would also include player of the year, top scorer, etc.

Very young Kerry side but lots of quality.
Bit unfair on Mayo supporters that this is on at 2pm and senior game is at 6pm - thought they'd be adjacent in the schedule. Basically forces Mayo supporters to watch the Tyrone-Monaghan game.

Is the Mayo team comprised just from non-senior clubs or is it essentially a B panel?

Does this apply to all other counties?
All GAA club bars are open alright though!

GAA Discussion / Best debut season?
October 01, 2014, 07:31:38 PM
I was wondering who if anyone has had a better debut season than Paul Murphy?
Scored a goal on his championship debut from corner back, played every minute of every championship game, scored a crucial equalising point in the All-Ireland final that was a good bit closer to the sideline than Dooher's much acclaimed point in 2008, played very well in every game, won Man Of The Match in the All-Ireland final, won an All-Ireland medal, is a definite for an All-Star and had a shooting accuracy for the year that forwards could only dream of (https://mobile.twitter.com/sidelineye/status/515521428717068289/photo/1).

Ronan Clarke in 02 would be close but didn't get the motm in an AI final or an All-Star but did get young player of the year.

Following on from Johnny Giles' comments saying that the problem with the English team is they don't have enough players who'd kill their granny, who are the GAA players that would kill their granny?

This isn't to be mixed up with the dirtiest players or the toughest players.  A good example was the Kerry player John Crowley. He wasn't dirty or especially that tough (no shrinking violet either), but by God he'd kill his granny to win an All-Ireland.
Colm O'Rourke is another example that comes to mind.

GAA Discussion / Football Qualifiers 2014
May 20, 2014, 11:17:16 AM
Not sure how old this news is but it's new to me...

Quote
http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/refitted-back-door-opens-chances-of-repeat-clashes-in-qualifiers-30276248.html

An increase in the number of provincial rematches looks certain in this season's All-Ireland football qualifiers, arising from the installation of a new 'back door' mechanism.

Aimed at streamlining the qualifier system, the new structure will ensure that no county has to wait more than five weeks for a first round game, as opposed to six or seven under the old regime. The ultimate ambition is to reduce it to four weeks.

The new design will also give a more even spread of games and guarantee beaten provincial finalists a minimum of 13 days before their fourth round qualifier.

Consequently, the All-Ireland quarter-finals will be played over two weekends, rather one weekend as happened in the past.

The GAA's head of games Fergal McGill said the new system offered counties the opportunity to provide a more balanced club programme.

DIVIDED

Instead of 16 counties being placed in the same bowl for the first round qualifier draw, they will be divided into two groups of eight, depending on whether they were designated 'A' or 'B' side in their provincial draw.

The counties are divided as follows this year:

A: Fermanagh, Antrim, Derry, Donegal, Tipperary, Limerick, Cork, Galway, London, Sligo, Wicklow, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Wexford, Dublin.

B: Tyrone, Down, Armagh, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Waterford, Kerry, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Westmeath, Louth, Kildare, Carlow, Meath.

The eight counties from 'A' and 'B' who don't reach their provincial semi-finals will be in Round 1 of the qualifiers. Two draws will take place to provide four pairings from 'A' and 'B.' Teams in 'A' cannot be paired with teams in 'B.'

That division will continue throughout the qualifiers, so that counties know in advance which group they will join if eliminated from the provincial championships.

The division of counties into 'A' and 'B' greatly increases the likelihood of repeat pairings from the provinces, something that caused concern in the past.

There will be no restriction on provincial rematches in Rounds 1 and 2, but it will apply from there on.

"The new system makes provincial repeats more likely in the first two rounds – there's no doubt about that. But, in the overall scheme of things, there are a lot of advantages to the new system.

"It will probably take a year or two for people to get fully used to it, but once it settles in there will be clear benefits on a number of fronts," said McGill.

Does this mean group A teams can't meet group B teams until the 1/4 final?

Conor Counihan being the next Brian Cody...

Joe Lennon in 1968:
"Kerry are 30 years behind the time and won't win an All Ireland for another 30 years. "
Kerry won the next 2 All-Irelands and won 10 in the next 18 years.

When a free off the hands came in first, if you hopped or soloed the ball while waiting to take the free it was a hopball, even if you were waiting a few minutes while an injured player received treatment.
Also, only the player fouled could take the free of their hands, if anyone else took the free they had to take it off the ground. Again a hopball if they took it off their hands by mistake.
For 45s it was the luck of the draw ofor whether you had a ref that allowed 45s off your hands or off the ground. Again, it was a hopball if you took a 45 off your hands with a ref who only allowed it off the ground.
It was a confusing time all round and hopballs were the order of the day. A dozen or more hopballs in a game was quite common.

GAA Discussion / Price reductions for replays
September 10, 2012, 11:15:33 AM
Last night on TSG they were calling for prices to be reduced to half-price for the hurling replay which I thought was incredible as the GAA are guaranteed a full house and €6 million in revenue from the replay if they keep them the same.
I don't remember any such demands in '00 or '96.
However outside of finals I think there should always be a discount for replays especially if the first game had another game on like a double-header or a minor game.

This is my first All-Ireland final that I'll be watching as a neutral since 1998, since then I've shouted for Meath, Kerry, Galway, Kerry, Tyrone, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Down and Kerry.
What's your last neutral final where you genuinely had no inclination one way or the other in your support?

On a separate issue I'd never attend an All-Ireland final as a neutral supporter as I feel it'd be wrong to take the seat of someone from one of the 2 (or 4) counties involved, especially when I've gotten to see almost 20 All-Ireland finals involving my own county (Kerry), but then I think if that was the way everyone did things then someone from let's say Laois would go their whole life without witnessing an All-Ireland final.

2 potential milestones for Saturday.
Colm Cooper is just 2 points off Mikey Sheehy from being the all-time top scorer in the history of the GAA Championship.
Tomás Ó Sé will gain the record for most championship appearances with 82, overtaking his brother Darragh.

Some decent trivia questions at http://experiencemore.ie/ although they start to repeat once you've played a few times.
An opportunity to win GAA tickets for the next qualifying round and for the All-Ireland final as well.
My highest score was 43. I don't know how the guys on 64 managed it. I got all 5 questions right with 12 or 13 seconds remaining on the clock.

GAA Discussion / Pirlo in Gaelic Football

GAA Discussion / Beating teams twice?
July 26, 2011, 12:06:54 PM
If Kerry beat Limerick it will be Kerry's third time beating a team twice in the same c'ship year after doing so to Cork twice before, in '05 and '07.
This excludes the early days of the GAA when wins were wiped out due to various objections by the losers and a replay called.
What other occasions has a team beaten another twice in the c'ship?

GAA Discussion / Bye bye Ricky Nixon...
February 22, 2011, 02:55:28 PM
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/sport/ricky-nixon-file-bound-for-senior-lawyer/story-e6frg7mf-1226010344911

QuoteThe video, which is the subject of a Victoria Police investigation, shows a man, alleged to be Nixon, in underpants on the bed of the girl at the centre of the St Kilda naked pictures scandal.

The video threatens to end the 47-year-old's career.

Nixon painted himself as a fatherly figure on Melbourne radio on Monday -- trying to help a troubled young girl

Looks like he got his excuse from the Neil Prendeville book of excuses.

Are there any GAA matches going on at any GAA club or county grounds that are captured in Google Streetview or even Google satellite view?

If anyone checked 2 GAA grounds we might find a few.
