GAA Discussion / Re: Mayo v Dublin
April 01, 2007, 11:05:21 PM
Quoteanything in the report about Dublin fans attacking officials?

4 Dublin fans were arrested on the pitch after the match. It seemed that one of them wanted to go over and attack the ref or something. His 'mates' were trying to stop him and a long story short - a bunch of them ended up scrapping with one another and at one stage kicking a guard who was there.
Lest anyone thing this is a tinted view - all the Mayo fans hovering around the incident and goading were a disgrace too. And the speed to which McHale Park maors reacted to the bunch of 40 or so teenagers attempting to get on the pitch prior to the end of the match. And those teenagers were a disgrace for goading at Cluxton, but he should have known better than to react.

Oh yeah, and Mayo win without being clinical, qualifying for the league semi with a game to spare and with serious room for improvement. Few comments:
What the blazes happened Kenneth O'Malley ? Did he bang his head off the crossbar ? Up to that point, it was his least impressive performance to date.
Full back position will continue to be a problem. Kilcullen can only mark a certain type of player.
Enda Devenney was very disappointing. He was so loose that other lads had to try and cover for him leaving an overlap. Sideline should have taken him off sooner. Still, he is better than that and will hopefully return to form.
Conor Mort was a bit too trigger happy.
Things didn't go Austies way but still no excuse for what looked like a lazy approach to working his socks off hen he failed to win possession

For the first 15 minutes, we had a bucket full of point and goal scoring chances and dominated. What was the trigger though that lead to us switching off and Dublin dominating until half time ? In the 2nd half the wides continued in as bad a fashion as i have seen from a Mayo team for years. It was disappointing that we weren't able to improve our kicking to break the rot but after a few wides an extra bit of tension always comes into the kicking technique with the body not as relaxed and it takes that extra bit of class and experience to turn it round ..... so disappointing not to have improved the kicking as the half wore on.

And lastly but by no means least, congrats to Jimmy Nallen - now has more 'caps' that any other player in the history of Mayo GAA, i.e.: league and championship appearances .... takes over from Dermot Flanagan (or am i 1 game too soon for that ?)

I think anyone being critical of Kilcullen would want to watch the match again. Fair enough Cussen got a goal and flicked on for another but given the amount of long high ball that came his way, i thought Kilcullen did really well, particularly in the second half.

As for the comment about the 'old half' .... surely Harte and Moran don't fall into this category !

QuoteThere is one thing i noticed since the Fermanagh game, that is how much the team as a whole has bulked up physically

That was 2 weeks ago - must be some angel dust they are eating

Support play in the 2nd half was very impressive. It might possibly the paciest Mayo team i have ever seen. The danger is that slotting MacD back into centre forward will change all that in terms of style of play

Why oh why a spinner to Matsi for the last over...
One thing i don't understand .....  why did O'Brien throw the last ball to the non batting end when nothing was to be gained from it apart from the a risk of missing the stumps and giving Zimbabwe the chance to get a single to win (maybe i am missing some details here as i was listening to the radio)
And crap .... i thought we had won it with the last run out

QuoteWell having played both and hurling it is obvious hurling is the most skillful................ In Gaelic football you would find most players can't kick with their weaker foot, can't kick accuratly over distance with their good foot, very rarely kick a point from over 30/35 yards out

Contracdictory statements there i would have thought. If the majority of players in gaelic football can't execute the skills you describe while the average hurler can execute a similar skill set in hurling, then surely it suggests the gaelic has a basic skill set that is more difficult to master and thus is a more skillful sport ???
Just because hurling can be more aesthetically pleasing on the eye because a higher percentage of players have mastered the basic skill set, doesn't mean it is a more skillful sport.

Mayo / Re: Mayo Club Football.

I thought the proposal was that there would be 10 teams in each of Div 1A and 1B and the same for Div.'s 2 and 3, as there are 60 teams (clubs?). If i am not mistaken, then my club have come out th wrong side of this again, i.e.: a place or 2 higher and we would have been playing a higher grade of football. If i am not mistaken, this is the 3rd time in about 6 years the leagues have been re-structured and it is the 3rd time my club have come out on the wrong side of it. Was it too much to ask that they came up with these proposals this time last year so that clubs would know in advance ..... or perhaps leave the leagues as they are for now and introduce these changes for the 2008 league ?

QuoteThe thing with Brady is that despite his limitations as a footballer, he does intimidate opponents - the only Mayo player in my time that has.

Jaysus, you must be fairly young

I see all these new rules are kicking in for the NFL re water carriers, designated warm ends, 5 non-subs in the dugout. Re the last point, is there anything in it to stop the manager from doubling up as both manager and runner.
I'd said Paidi is back running up over Galrus (spl?) every day at the thought of it

Selectors to be Tommy Lyons and Kieran Gallagher with Martin Carney onboard as an analyst.
