Mayo / Re: clubmayo

It is you that needs to think it through. The county board is the clubs. The clubs acting as the board has made this decision. In any organisation there must be a controlling authority. Clubmayo was set up as a supporters club. GAA rules state that all supporters clubs are subject to the authority of their county board and all monies raised are to be dispensed at or by the direction of the board. I have no gripe with Clubmayo but the rules back up the position of the board.

This is a simple case of democratic rule. The clubs of the county decided that they (as the county board) have full control of all matters to do with Mayo Gaa. Clubmayo were asked to row in with Cairde Mhaigheo as the umbrella body for all supporters clubs but indicated that they wished to act independently. That is not feasible. If each unit of the Mayo GAA decided that it needed to have autonomy in relation to how the funds it raised were dispensed there would be anarchy.
Nobody denies that Clubmayo did and does great work to support the teams but the tail cannot wag the dog. I dont see there being any case to put before the "wigs". The precedents for the County Board's action are well established.
There are many people within Mayo as well as those in Dublin who would wish to see their donations spent only on county teams. Given that the total cost of running teams is far in excess of the amounts raised by Clubmayo, the Mayo Supporters Club, Mayo Patrons Scheme etc or any other fundraising body, it could be argued that their contributions do go there. But in any organisation there has to be democratic control and ultimately that is what this is about,
For once the Board, but more so the clubs, have got it right. If those involved in Clubmayo have the interests of Mayo GAA at heart ( and I presume they do ) it is not to late to reach an understanding with the Board. The majority of delegates would welcome that move - but only if it allows the ultimate contol of finances to reside where it should... with a democratically elected Board.

Tragic.
A lovely lad who played the game hard and fair. Along with Keith Higgins he was still the mainstay of the Ballyhaunis team.
Football aside, its a horrendous blow to his wife and young child.
RIP

Conor Mort featured for 15 mins for Shrule. Scored 2 points from frees on the right side of goal - one very good pressure kick. Might need a few more weeks to be right.

Ballymun barely scraped a draw against Claremorris in the round robin. Paddy Christie acknowledged that they had been completely outplayed. Maybe super clubs from Mayo should be banned too. Well done Ballymun.

its still only October. I know people like the sound of their own voices and rate themselves as managers/selectors but how about shutting this and all similar threads down for a few months and giving JH and his team time and space to put their panel together

No lover of the curent board here but one has to ask the question as to how James horan could so easily think of leaving Ballintubber as they face into a county final. i know that the Mayo job doesn't start immediately but perhaps it should. If I had a young team in my home club like JH has I would be looking to win county, provincial and All-Ireland titles, not jumping into county job. This is not to knock his credentials for the job. Anyway with the interview board stacked it's difficult to see what he can gain.

What I've heard is that he's in because he's Cora's puppet on the sidelines. Apparently she effectively coaches the squad now, because she herself is uncoachable.

(I have no idea if that is true or not.)

I'd believe every word of that rumour.
Its a shame that this is the level to which comment on this board has descended. It is not good enough that posters hiding behind their tag can publish scurilous innuendo about a named individual with nothing to back it up except the ruminations of their infantile minds. Ml. Murphy irrespective of whither he is a priest or not has a track record of involvement in the promotion of Gaelic games within Mayo. He was responsible for "hurling on the Green" in Castlebar some years ago and this year coached Mt. St. Michael's Claremorris to an All-Ireland Schools title. Cora Staunton can fight her own battles - her record speaks for itself. Fr. Mike is facilitating Mayo Ladies participation in the c/ship - something most of the supporters in the county wish to see. With a depleted squad it is a thankless task that he has undertaken. Perhaps the least he deserves is a little respect or .

Gearóid the Great is in his final year as an intercounty ref before he has to retire on age grounds. Head of the Comm which appoints refs is one Ml. Curley of the same parish. If Connacht is not in All Ireland Final expect to see the great one in Sept.

Thanks Lar for the kick in the ass. I think I made my own point re. each of us distorting history to a degree. I may have been a little heavy with the butter but still contend that Reilly made a huge contribution within the squad that year. In training he and Gary Ruane( who didn't feature on any c/ship team that year) were immense. Reilly was bedevilled by injury. He continued to play post All-Ire and featured in 3 league games in Div.2. I would have checked the archive but hadn't come across Willie Joe's blog until you cited it. Jam on the bread! It's a great source.
Finally no rant today. Few pints last night, breakfast delivered to the bed this morning, sun shining, sky blue..... what more could a man want. Bring on the Langers ;D

Its amazing what the passage of time and a degree of bile and bias will do to history. Reading some posts lately I was left wondering how many Mayo posters saw any NfL league games in1995/96 or did they all wait for the final stages of championship!.... but just for the record:
Tom Reilly (Mitchels and Castlebar) came out of retirement in 1995 and played in all/nearly all Mayo's league campaign in Div3! In fact the two stars of that campaign were Flanagan in defence and Reilly in attack. I'm sure reports of these games are archived by Western/Mayo News/Telegraph. There might have been no championship revival in '96 had it not been for the foresight of Maughan to bring Flanagan, Holmes and Reilly back to mix with the youngsters in what was a torrid campaign( Match v Wexford moved to a bog of a pitch stands out in my mind). Any player who dons the Green and Red should been given respect especially by those of us who wouldn't tie their laces. Excuse the rant. I'm right fine now.

in fairness to the programme makers they are not clairvoyant and were not to know the results of last weekends games. If Mayo, Dublin and Cork had ended up on the same number of points then score difference would have come into play. Head to head only applies when two teams end equal.

2- 15 to 1-08 suggests a comprehensive defeat no matter what happened before the game. If Tubberman's melee actually happened it is surprising that it wasn't front page news on the national papers who love to highlight such incidents especially if there are Ulster teams involved. A shut mouth is best when beaten like this - we have wallowed in excuses for too long.
