With one punch, Ikemefuna Enemkpali transformed himself from a little known third-string linebacker into a figure of infamy for the Jets.



Geno Smith was scheduled to have surgery after his jaw was broken.

Enemkpali, 24, broke quarterback Geno Smith's jaw on Tuesday morning with what Coach Todd Bowles called a "sucker punch." He was immediately released.

Enemkpali, known as I.K., grew up in Texas and was a team captain at Louisiana Tech. A defensive lineman and sack specialist who earned all-Conference USA status in his final season, he was drafted in the sixth round in 2014 by the Jets. At 6 feet 1 inch, 272 pounds, he was considered a bit undersized for an N.F.L. defensive line and was converted to an outside linebacker.

He got into six games as a rookie last year and made three tackles in limited minutes. He drew more attention from the news media for the difficulty some people had in pronouncing his name (it's in-em-PAUL-ee) than for his performance on the field.

His draft profile on NFL.com, in a weird bit of foreshadowing, said: "Strengths: Very thickly built. Flashes shock and violence in his punch. Highly competitive, plays hard and motor runs hot. Keeps battling to the quarterback."

While at Louisiana Tech, he was arrested in April 2011 for disturbing the peace and battery of a police officer and was suspended from the team, though he returned in time for the start of the season. He was eventually sentenced to probation and community service.

"A young, hotheaded decision," Enemkpali told ESPN. "I didn't know he was undercover, which is no excuse, but ... yeah, I lost my cool."

After earning $420,000 last season, he was to have made $510,000 with the Jets this year.

His sister Nneka played basketball at the University of Texas and was drafted this spring in the third round of the W.N.B.A. draft by the Seattle Storm, although she is sitting out the season with a torn ACL.

The locker room incident led to an immediate outpouring of despair, schadenfreude and humor on social media.

Year before think I went doug Martin who did nothing for me in first round.

Tipp, I too had Adrian Peterson.  After the draft, the computer rated mine the best draft.  I finished dead last and am now in the second division.  Damn that child-beater!
