General discussion / Nelson Mandela RIP
December 05, 2013, 10:12:48 PM
I think it deserves a thread of its own. The death of a man who was considered a terrorist in his day and who ended up as one of the most respected world statesmen ever.

General discussion / Don McCullin

Just got around to watching an amazing documentary about this man that I had taped ages ago. Imagine.......McCullin it's called. He has been to hell and back in different scenarios recording the war in Vietnam and famine in Africa. Some of the stuff is truly horrific. Makes me wonder what other type of stuff has been recorded and that we have yet to see in Afghanistan, Iraq, etc with the advent of digital technology.

General discussion / Documentaries
July 14, 2013, 08:56:14 PM
Watching a show here about Treblinka. Scary stuff.  I've always said fact was stranger than fiction. I love watching a really good documentary series. World at War is amazing. Some of the stuff on PBS is great. The series about the history of baseball was unbelievable. I never miss the documentary hour and the curious ear on Radio 1. Anyone ever hear the one about the two lads who blagged their way to Manhattan on their own from Dublin Airport. But the lads at TG4 excel themselves with all sorts of stuff. Laochra Gael, Fearaibh Fionntra, Bibeanna and Scannal. top class.Any other recommendations lads??

.....it doesn't exist. The photo of Galvin & O'Leary at the end of the Munster Final would do your heart good after the 2 hoors knocking 7 shades of shite out of each other. I know for a fact Darragh Sé and Whelan are buddies. The oul Dubs and the Kerry Golden years lads are still meeting up for Golf. No Keane/Haaland scenarios here. Or is there? Discuss?

Just watching the devastation in Oklahoma...how lucky are we in Ireland that we don't get wrecked by tsunamis, tornadoes, twisters, hurricanes, etc, etc.

Right lads I have encountered some real pernickety hoors in my time. Mate of mine has a business painting white and yellow lines. Himself and his crew had just finished painting a few double yellow lines. Maybe about 50yards long. They went to get a cup of tea. Parked the yoke up 40 yards behind where they had finished cos the lines were dry. They came back out and saw that they had a fcukin ticket. Beat that.

Down / Lost talent in Down.

Copying a topic from another county's forum.

Which players should have, could have, would have made it in the red & black but didnt for whatever reason.

I'll give you 2 to start.

Brian Conlon. Some might say he did make it as he featured in several lge & cship matches. A superb midfielder in the mould of Tohill whose career was cut short by injury in a University game. But for that injury he would have two AI medals in his arse pocket.

Kieran Ruddy. A contemporary of DJ Kane and most of the  guys on the 91 team. Probably the most skilful underage player I have ever seen. Never played senior county football for various reasons but mostly because he couldn't be arsed! (He'll tell you that himself) Think Shorty Treanor with more skill and speed...there I've said it.....bring it on Burren heads!!

General discussion / Bypasses and new motorways.
December 14, 2012, 10:11:38 PM
While there's no doubt that the N7/M7, N1/M1, N4/M4/M6e tc, etc are a great addition to the infrastructure of this island...there are many things that are still missed from driving through the wee villages and towns of this country. Mar shampla...a feed in the Grove or the Monasterboice....a sneaky pint in Séamus Darby's in Toomevara..I mind having the crack in Castleisland..on the main street...in traffic...with Kieran Donaghy...windows wound down...me goin one way him going the other...what else do you miss. Or what do you not miss :(...trying to get through Banbridge or Dromore during marching season is one I won't miss. Bhur mbarúil?

Meant to post it earlier but the Irish News had a classic after Engerland were beat by Italy on penos.

"Sick in Kiev."

Any others?

A post on another thread about John Egan attending the Derrytresk Dinner Dance on his own when invited got me thinking.

These lads gave very generously of their time for no reward in days gone by..we had Tommy Doyle in the 80s and he refused to take expenses. Numerous others like Trevor Giles and local Down lads were the same although normally they would have got some token of appreciation. Lately we have had Steven McDonnell and Seán Cavanagh who were the same...fair play to them..Cavanagh came to one of our underage presentations the evening after the Moy won the league and got promotion a few years ago and stayed all night. He was well entitled to say sorry lads cant make it I'm goin on the piss with my mates.

Have things changed much?? I hear of some "celebrity" former GAA lads charging outrageous money to say a few words at a club function. Is the spirit of Egan, Giles and Cavanagh still alive or I'm I being naive??

General discussion / Tweet of the Week
April 03, 2012, 09:46:21 PM
I think this deserves a seperate thread...

best I saw lately was this one from an unnamed tweeter (for libel reasons)...after Cross won their 6th All Ireland on Saturday...

"There won't be a gallon of red diesel washed in South Armagh tonight".  :D
