Anyone watch Justified on Sky Atlantic/Sky On Demand? A US Marshall working in Kentucky, dealing with all the various hillbilly criminals he comes across, including the Dixie mafia. Good watch.

Top top show!!! Raylan is some boyo!

I've been hearing Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series (Master and Commander, etc.) proclaimed for years as being among the best historical fiction there is. Most recently, I heard a re-broadcast interview with Derek Davis about his favourite books and he put these at the top of his list. So I decided to treat myself.

I'm nearly half way through Master and Commander and I'm beginning to wonder. So far, there's no plot, hardly any character development, no sympathetic characters at all (the hero you're invited to identify with is a pirate in British navy uniform, motivated solely by greed) and nothing has happened except the ship sailing up and down, over and across the Mediterranean. It would be fascinating on the minutiae of sailing ships and their rigging, get-up and oddly-named bits and pieces if that wasn't more or less all there is.

Has anybody here read these and am I missing something? Or is it just taking a long time to warm up?

Jaysus they are a cracking series...  I couldn't put them down - read the whole series and I guess I'm looking forward to re-reading them in the next few years

Probably about 20 years too late but Homicide Life on the Streets is absolutely fantastic. Pembleton is some boy! Great box set.
The show is timeless, well the  6 series are,  the 7th is mostly missable.
The rookie Bayliss, his first case sets the whole series as being outstanding, from his first crime scene, to the gut wrenching time when they inform the family to the intense interrogation (him and Frank) of the suspect.
The 6th series,  in amongst the 22 or so episodes you have a couple of the all time exceptional episodes of tv drama is a series  -   Paul Giamatti & his pit bulls, and the man in the subway episode.

Is it on NetFlix gents??  Soon as I get the Internet sorted, I'll be getting my scription...

when u look at Munster and ulster football draws it really shows  how unfair  the all Ireland is. i wonder how Kerry would fair every year if they were in ulster. seriously time for an open draw

Nah. If was a good idea it would have been introduced years ago.

The reality is attendances would be as bad as we get now for qualifiers. What buzz would ye get for say Down v Kerry in Croke Park in May? Waste of time.

The current system might not be great but at least ye get games with a bit of local bite and usually the best 8 teams are still standing when the real stuff starts in August. Ok, Ulster is especially competitive but usually the form team gets through and it doesn t seem to do them any harm when they emerge from the bear pit.  At least they know they ve a serious team going into the serious stuff.

Agreee totally with ya
