GAA Discussion / Re: Galway V Mayo R4 Qualifier

Surely Hyde Park is a far more suitable venue? Can easily hold 20,000. aaDoubt there will be any more than 3000 Galway fans at it.

GAA Discussion / Re: County Manager Merry go round
October 24, 2018, 12:59:37 PM
For those complaining about Duke and Cooney..Its a poor journalist that writes as a fan rather than an impartial observer.  Its not a journalists job to act as cheerleader for the county board or whoever. Their job is to ferret out facts and publish them. Ecpecting a journalist to say nothing 'for the good of the county' would make them very poor journalists.

I would be giving Tommy Conroy a shout. I am sure he wants to manage the county team eventually but this would give him a chance to cut his teeth. Seems to be a good man manager dealing with lads like Connolly etc

I am old enough to remember the 70s and 80s. In 1981/82 interest in football was really low. The 1981 season was a damp squib and in 82 only 17000 turned up for an All Ireland Semi final. Offaly then casued a massive upset and interest was rekindled. Dublin will come back to the back. In fact I would argue its happenning now. One Cluxton goes Dublin will be in bother.
As for Roscommon we are not a top 8 team but are a top 10 team. A lot of managers would be interested in the job but going for some journeyman will not benefit us. I doubt Rochford would take a step that far down so how about one of his backroom team? Tony McEntee would definitely bring some steel and defensive nous. I would thik he would love a tilt at management and a division 1 team would be a good start for him. There is absolutely nobody within the county worthy of the job yet.

I ahve to admit I am in tow minds about McStay staying on. Yes we have had easy draws and two of our defeats have been utter catastrophes but we idi acheice our stated objectives for 2018. Kenin Walsh was nearly ousted last year and a lot of Galway fans were calling for his head but he changed tack and brought in somer outside help. We need to do that. If McStay goes who do we replace him with? There is nobody within Roscommon that I can think of and as for an outsider who could we get? Banty? Canavan? McGrath? All yesterdays men. We do nee3d a defensive coach and certainly a lot more work to be done on fitness and S&C. Maybe its worth giving McStay the same chane Walsh got. I dont think another manager is the answer unless its Jim McGuiness or Jim Gavin.

Just on here. Never met a Tyrone fan that abused any Rossie. I see the lad you are talking but you cant direct annoyance at Roscommon fans over one clown.

Anyone would think Roscommon were an arrogant group the abuse being fired at them and their supporters? What have we ever done to Tyrone? I massively admire Tyrone they way they have come from being a minnow to now giants of football in the past two decades.
Tyrone were just in a different class to Roscommon on Saturday. Roscommosn S & C was dire compared to Tyrone but that is not a new problem. In 2016 Roscommon on 4 of there first 5 league games and then ran into Mayo who swatted them away. It was clear that day that Roscommon were much physically weaker than Mayo. Two years later the same is true. But what is worse is that we are no way near the fitness required to be a top tier team. That was obvious in the Connacht Final where or players totally ran out of steam near the end. An issue though is finance. Roscommon have very little money and their financial affairs are ran by Croke Park. If McStay demanded 100k more for S&C, fitness coaches and statisticians he would be refused.  Thats not an excuse just a fact.
What is really disappointing for supporters is the way we thre in the towel and shipped a catastrophic beating. Same as against Mayo last year. That is inexcusable. Fans do deserve better than that. Hard to explain how we ran Galway so close and then produced a display like that. After our match I felt that Galway could be destroyed by Kerry but the opposite happenned.
While I did think Tyrone looked awesome and they are well set up to reach the semis I would caution on what happenned last year. Destroyed Armagh in Q/F but then surrendered meekly to Dublin and were lucky to lose by only 12 points. So not so sure why Tyrone can laugh at our beating when they themselves were victims of a similar one 11 months ago.

So Dublin have made official what we all knew all along.
Croke Park IS their home ground.
That or Roscommon not wanting to cause any hassle.

In fairness if Roscommon lose their first two games and Dublin win theirs then I could see that game being moved to Parnell Park. Rossies wont travel with nothing at stake and Dublin will have qualified so no attraction for Dublin fans either. Would make sense to move to PP.

Folks Roscommon have only one grudge match and thats against Mayo. Any clowns trying to say there is some sort of 'history' between us and Tyrone is deluded. Tyrone fans are entitled to believe thery will win this one easily and they could well be right. However I am hoping that perhaps Tyrone are not as good as people think and that just maybe we are a bit better than given credit for. In the Conn Final we kicked some shocing wides and drop shorts yet Galway only won the game in injury time. Yet they are spoken of as All Ireland Contenders while we are there to make up the numbers and be thrilled to be there with the big lads. Roscommon have every chance of winning on Saturday but that said I do think Tyrone will have a bit more craft to get them over the line by 2-3 points.  draw woulde be good though...beat Donegal at home and all we would need to do is lost to Dudlin by less than Tyrone do. I am sure the Dubs would do us a favour there  ;) ;)A

I've seen a lot of novelty acts at county and Ulster level and they are mostly crap.  The same tired old jokes rehashed all the time, unbearable stuff.

I did the Scór quiz for the guts of a decade and am not surprised it has been separated.  The dancers and the musicians who make up most of the audience find the quiz boring.

The two dance categories, balad group, instrumental music and solo singing are similar enough that they will attract people who will be happy enough to sit and watch what will be a nights entertainment for them.  It wouldn't be my cup of tea but everyone has their personal preferences.

The right call in my view.

I find the recitation boring but would not be in favour of scrapping it.  In fairness any written format quiz is very boring for a spectator which is why the quiz should go back to an oral one with 5 seconds to answer any question. That would speed the thing up.

Connacht Scór committee resigned en bloc tonight. This story is growing legs as its the Grassroots taking on the highest levels of the GAA.The decision to scrap both competition was solely the idea of one man...Liam O'Neill. He rode roughshod over every suggestion he was given. Obviously the man is still smarting over a question he missed in the past and this is his revenge!

I enjoy the Scor but it goes on far too long.  By removing the quiz and novelty act they are also cutting down on the time.  I agree with previous posters, with a little imagination and very little cost the Quiz could have been kept.

Novelty act has always been hit and miss.  It's probably the most difficult to do.  Personally I would keep them two and get rid of the recitation.  The elocution lessons brigade do my f**king head in.    I also think that having Rince Foirne and Rince Set needs to be looked at, there is no need for both!!

Only three clubs took part in the Rince Foirne in the whole of Connacht in 2013. Yet around 25-30 quiz teams took part. Makes no sense.

None now!

This year the individulas were written but the team questions had to answered at the mike. The reason the novelty are gone is that Liam O'Neil claimed many were racist and sectarian in tone and were full of toilet humour. That seems a tad over the top.
The simple fact is that the GAA want rid of Scor completely and the best way is to remove the two copmpetitions that had the most competitors. What is left now is a glorified feis.

To me it looks like very senior members of the GAA hierarchy want to completely revamp scór and get rid of the quiz and novelty acts on the grounds the competitors tend to be the more rowdy and drinking sorts and that does not sit well with certain more abstemious people.

I believe there was a bit of controversy with the Trath nagCeist. Rumour has it there was an appeal on the day and another one been taken this week to Croke Park. Anyone hear about this?
