How could the GAA grant digital rights to such a shower??
This is the same newspaper that came up with this

and this

Has the GAA lost its moral compass? I mean, who makes these decisions?

Hurling Discussion / Under 10 hurling blitzes
July 20, 2013, 02:24:40 PM
Anyone know of any under 10 hurling blitzes coming up in August that accept clubs from outside the county?

We've a talented bunch of under 10s and we're willing to travel with them to get decent games.

Thanks

unbelieveable to see a team from Easkey/St Farnan's in west sligo win Division 4.

there was no club in west sligo until a few years ago.
shows what can be done with hard work!

I'm looking for images from the Bank of Ireland adverts from the early naughties - Ask not what your county can do for you

Cannot find them anywhere on the net.
There was a whole series of them.

All I want for Christmas is fair promotion of all sports...

Hundreds of GAA clubs across the country have outlawed the playing of controversial sports such as Hurling, Camogie and Handball.

Just in case children and club members actually enjoying playing these sports even mentioning them has been banned in clubs. No attempt will ever be made to promote these sports as they are against the founding principles of these football clubs.

Many clubs have made no effort to promote these other sports in their clubs and communities, thus going against the founding ideals of the GAA.

A spokes person for one of the clubs said - "Sure why would we want our members playing other GAA sports - it'd be better if they took up some rugby or soccer for the winter to keep fit before the football starts back in spring".

Studies have shown that multi sport clubs are far more successful in the long run at all sports - both underage and adult, as their players stay playing one or other sport in the club and there is less drop out.

RTÉ Television today announced that the much-loved original Sunday Game theme tune will be re-instated this year to celebrate 30 years of the popular flagship GAA programme.

The James Last composed theme tune, which was replaced in 2004, has been remastered by music composer John Walsh and will be played on tomorrow's Sunday Game Live on RTÉ Two at 2.45pm, the opening programme of the season.

Paul Byrnes, Executive Editor, GAA and Editor of The Sunday Game said: 'When The Sunday Game theme tune was replaced in 2004 it was part of a remodernisation of The Sunday Game. We very much wanted to make the point that we were updating our Gaelic Games coverage and moving with the times.

'We'll of course continue to have a fresh approach to our coverage this year with three new panellists and a new analysis system, but over the last few seasons we've been inundated with requests from the public to bring it back and this year, the 30th year of The Sunday Game, seemed to be the appropriate time to do it.

'Travelling the length and breadth of the country with The Sunday Game over the last few years, the replacement of the theme tune was always much talked about and lamented.

'It's fitting that the 30th year of The Sunday Game will feature the best of both worlds - a link to the past while looking forward to what promises to be a very exciting Championship season'.

***********************

RTE realised what a mistake they'd made. the BBC would never ditch the match of the day theme song

where can I get a full list of fixtures for this competition?

thanks

from the mayofans website. there are just TWO club competitions in Mayo. Championship and Genfitt Cup

******

Genfitt Cup

At the beginning of this week, clubs received notification of this weekends fixtures. However also included in the notification was a demand that €1000 be paid by all the participents to play in the competition. The explanation given was that it is technically a different grade to Senior and that Coyle Hamilton (GAA insurers) had instructed that players in this competition were not covered. It stated that the money had to be with county treasurer by Thursday otherwise the games would not go ahead.

It is deeply unsettling that the county board did not include the genfitt cup as a different grade in the registeration of teams at the beginning of the year and it poses the question why did they leave it so close to the start of the competition to impose this charge.

It is also difficult to understand why the Genfitt Cup is not classified as a senior competition: the only players not allowed are the starting players on the county team and this is only an agreement by the clubs and not a rule. Every player that plays in the Genfitt Cup plays senior also. An attempt to regrade this competition as a junior one would surely make these players ineligible to play senior (or the contrary, anyone that plays senior would then be ineligible to play Genfitt Cup). Given the fact that none of the clubs in Mayo have panels bigger than 30 it is hard to see how any club could compete.

At this point all the fixtures are off and there appears to be alot of confusion as to what is happening and whether the competition will take place.

O'Donoghue lashes out over Thomas Davis appeal
16 March 2007

Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism John O'Donoghue has launched an amazing broadside at the GAA over Thomas Davis' court action to allow Gaelic games to be played in the Tallaght Stadium at a time when he says they have "outright opposition to soccer being played in their own grounds."

O'Donoghue issued a press release following a report in today's Irish Star which claimed that the government had given €19m directly to the redevelopment of Croke Park.

In it he outlined all the money given to the GAA since 1998, which he believed to be over €285m.

"I am surprised and somewhat disappointed by the misleading and inaccurate statements being given to the media by some GAA sources on the level of Government Support for the GAA as reported in today's Irish Star newspaper," blasted O'Donoghue.

"It is time that the facts were put on the record. For instance, the Government has allocated almost, €114 million towards the redevelopment of Croke Park, which is considerably more than the, €19 million, being portrayed as fact by these anonymous sources within the organisation.

"The fact is that since 1998 alone, this Government has provided over, €268.5 million towards the development of facilities for all levels of gaelic games in cities, towns and parishes throughout the country. This funding has been warmly welcomed by hard-working GAA people as being of enormous benefit in supporting the fund raising and voluntary effort locally to provide much needed, high quality facilities for gaelic games in every corner of the country.

"And our support is not confined to facilities alone. Between 2001 and 2006 the Government provided special funding of almost, €13 million to assist the GAA in increasing participation at underage level, supporting the development of hurling in non-traditional areas and helping the Dublin County Board in its efforts in promoting gaelic games."

O'Donoghue then goes on to hit out at Thomas Davis' court action which has held up development work at the stadium, which he has stated must be only used for soccer and cannot be a multi-sport facility.

"In view of this unprecedented level of Government financial support for the GAA and the spirit of fairness and generosity, which should characterise sport in all its forms, it is a source of great disappointment to all genuine sports people that the stadium in Tallaght is being delayed by the action being taken by a GAA club."

The Minister saves his most damning statement for last when he blasts the association for trying to get gaelic games played at Tallaght Stadium, which he terms a soccer ground, despite the fact that Shamrock Rovers sold the ground to Dublin County Council.

"I also find it quite extraordinary that the GAA should wish to play gaelic games in a soccer ground given their outright opposition to soccer being played in their own grounds," said O'Donoghue.

Given the fact that the Irish soccer side is set to play their first game in Croke Park on March 24, there will be huge disappointment in many GAA circles at the tone of O'Donoghue's outburst.

******************************************************************************

Now, where do I begin??

* firstly that most of the money the government have 'given' out is Lotto money and so is not actually government money
* the government don't direclty supply any facilities to the public for sport so must give money to sports organisations to cover their inadequacies in this regard
*
Quotethe GAA should wish to play gaelic games in a soccer ground given their outright opposition to soccer being played in their own grounds
I thought Tallaght was owned by Dublin County Council and not any soccer club/authorities??

The list goes on...

The GAA has been asked by the Minister of Sport, John O'Donoghue, to keep Croke Park open beyond 2008.

Central Council recently rubber-stamped the opening of headquarters to non-Gaelic games for 2008 but the Minister wants that period extended.

"We've always said that the construction period would be in the order of 29 months," Minister O'Donoghue.

"That timeframe means that the requirement of the IRFU and the FAI to use Croke Park would go beyond 2008 and into 2009.

"In those circumstances I would hope that the GAA would pass another resolution at Congress to make Croke Park available to the IRFU and the FAI for their home internationals during the remaining period of the construction of Lansdowne Road.

"If we get planning permission in the middle of March, there's no reason why can't tear it down and start the construction of the stadium."

-------------------------------

That's great minister, but the bulldozers havn't even moved into the ground yet. I'm sure construction will not start until 2008 at the earliest

the motion at Congress asked for the Croker to be open during construction work at Landsowne

We want our stadium back
