Loughnane to stay on as Galway hurling boss
20/08/2008 - 08:54:45

Ger Loughnane has agreed to remain as Galway senior hurling manager following talks with the County Board last night.

The Clare man's future in the job had been in doubt following the side's elimination from the Championship in the final round of qualifiers.

Loughnane has already completed two years of his three-year term, but there was a stipulation that his contract would be reviewed after the second year.

Probably a good thing, and if Galway move into Leinster next year, along with Antrim it would definitely help both counties, Also on a side note Westmeath and Carlow should be invited into the Leinster championship aswell.

The money must have got sorted out to everyone's satisfaction then !  ;) ;)

Take it joes signed up to play next session aswell! Imagine he has been rewarded for, well , i dunno.
Pull hard and early

I agree with neilthemac, it is a bad call by Galway.
Loughnane has been there 2 years and Galway have made no progress at all. Were it not for Joe Canning, they could have been well hammered by Cork and I don't think Ger Lough can take the credit for Joe.
Loughnane has tried to get Galway to play like the Clare teams of the last few years and it just hasn't worked. After 2 years in charge, Galway still do not have an established full-back, midfield or centre-forward. When he took over Clare he inherited some excellent players in Lohan, McMahon, Daly, Doyle, Jamsie & Ger O'Loughlin.
I really think that Galway should have cut their losses and gone for someone else. Then again, if they play in Leinster next year it could well propel them onto something better

If they go in to Leinster it'll magnify whatever good a manager does. Loughnane doesn't seem to have much tact so that would put his man management skills in question but at the end of the day surely the players have to take responsibility for the cork match. How many of them would get sent off for the maroon as Finnerty (CEO of Tuam supermacs), was it ?, said.

With all the underage hurlers coming through sooner or later a team of monkeys with typewriters will produce the works of shakespeare and a senior all Ireland.

Reillers

Surprising, thought he'd be sacked. Apparently not.

In what context was that said ?

magickingdom

thought he get the door as well, you never know with ger tho they could go the whole way next year. i love to see them up against killkenny

Galforever

This is a very different version to what was in ithe Irish independent today which suggested that he could be on the way out

Galway have disimproved under Loughnane.
In his day he gave the Clare players that bit of madness and fury in their hurling, but he mightn't bring the same passion to Galway.
Perhaps he isn't much of a technical coach or tactician when you take out the motivational powers he had in Clare.

Are you saying Clare had better hurlers or a better team at that time and just needed that bit of madness to get them over the line ?

Jumpin the gun there slightly lads. Gerlock had a 3 year term with a 2nd year. He met the board, gave his season review (didnt take long.... ::)) and indicated that he is willing to continue for a third year.

The Hurling Board haven't decided to ratify him for the third year as yet. So Galway manager for next year is still up in the air......... You'd have thought if the Board wanted him to stay, there would be no delay in ratifying him. Ive a feeling theyre sniffing around to see who else would be interested and if a better candidate doesnt come along its Ger's job again for 2009.

I think Ger just found the inner psychopath in the Clare teams he managed  :D Them boys would ate nails for the cause........sure jesus look at Anthony Daly. Even now as an analyst.....is there another (ex)hurler in Ireland as excitable about hurling as him? Well maybe Davy Fitz.....wheres he from again?! Cant say the current group of Galway lads would be as mentally or physically hard as Ger is used to..........

That could be the problem - they're not Clare men !
