I have found in our area, and not just my club that two opposites happen:
1. Quitting because the team is so strong and he can't get a game.
2. Quitting because the team is so shite and he is sick of losing (probably after the age of 18, mind)
With regards to the 2nd point, I know a lot of players who put their heart and soul into playing for their clubs, and because the club wasn't doing well, all they got was flack from fat-arsed supporters. Their view was, what was the point?
I know that Benny Coulter suffered this sort of reaction from Down fans for most of the last decade.
For me its the same as teaching a group of, say, 20 kids the guitar -
1. You will have one or two that have brilliant potential and have no interest;
2. You will have a few who are naturally gifted and keep playing all their lives;
3. You have four or five who are limited to start and through sheer will and determination will go on to be fantastic guitar players;
4. The rest will try, but in time will find something else that they are better at or more interested in.
