GAA Discussion / Re: Quitting GAA at the age of 18
October 22, 2010, 02:25:27 PM
I have found in our area, and not just my club that two opposites happen:

1. Quitting because the team is so strong and he can't get a game.
2. Quitting because the team is so shite and he is sick of losing (probably after the age of 18, mind)

With regards to the 2nd point, I know a lot of players who put their heart and soul into playing for their clubs, and because the club wasn't doing well, all they got was flack from fat-arsed supporters. Their view was, what was the point?

I know that Benny Coulter suffered this sort of reaction from Down fans for most of the last decade.

For me its the same as teaching a group of, say, 20 kids the guitar -

1. You will have one or two that have brilliant potential and have no interest;
2. You will have a few who are naturally gifted and keep playing all their lives;
3. You have four or five who are limited to start and through sheer will and determination will go on to be fantastic guitar players;
4. The rest will try, but in time will find something else that they are better at or more interested in.

Thats the thanks ye get for trying to educate a scouser. Better of without him. Fergie should stick him in reserves and sell him in january. Modern footballers just continue to disappoint. Thank god for the GAA

Well said

Its great seeing how Kristofferson is appreciated - have loved his music for ages, but heard one song about a year ago called "To beat the Devil" - vintage stuff, talkin', singin', at his best -

"And if you don't wanna join him, well, you gotta beat him / I ain't sayin' I beat the devil but I drank his beer for nothin' / And then I stole his song ..."

Favourite opening line to a song:

"The world is a vampire, sent to drain..." - Rat in a Cage by Smashing Pumpkins

Favourite last line in a song:

"You're the measure of my dreams, the measure of my dreams" - Rainy Night in Soho by The Pogues

maybe the unnionists should form a club then they would get a ticket allocation :) wonder what they'd call themselves. any ideas ;D

They have plenty of fine fellow protestant folk to call their club after:

Wolfe Tone
Robert and Thomas Emmet
Roger Casement
John Mitchell
John Martin
Henry Joy McCracken
James Napper Tandy
Countess Markievicz

here goes, first post.

my fav line from a song ever. :you know your gonna lose and gambling for fools but thats the way i like it baby, i don't want to live forever:

worst lyric of all time has to come from the westlife legend B McFadden.

Picnics in the garden and the children they can play. The first day of the summer and I'll laze here all the day. We,ll invite the family round and drink some English tea, and i raise up my finger and watch football on TV.

from real to me. possibly the worst song ever to come out of Ireland.

That Brian McFadden lyric - one of the few things that could ever make me sympathise with Kerry Katona - livin with a tool that could write that.

Do stand up shows count?
If so, Eddie Murphy - Raw

Is it the one where he's wearing the red leather suit? If so, it's good, but he had an earlier 1 which was even funnier. Can't mind what it was called but he was wearing a purple leather suit.

Red Leather Suit one was called Delirious - he was wearing a purple leather suit in Raw, the follow up to Delirious..... why do I feel quite camp writing all this stuff about leather suits?

I see Jackie McDonald was saying a few positive things regarding Protestants participating in the GAA.  I think he was down at the AIF too.  Makes you wonder how many token tickets are given away by the powers that be, pretty sad when you see the number of true fans who cannot get a ticket come the Final each year.
Do you know of many true Down fans who attended McKenna Cup and League games that couldn't get tickets for the final?

Good point Maguire - Any fans that are serious about their football are usually members of their local club, and all members of our club got the allocations they were looking - albeit through some very hard work by the committee.

There's always a glaring omission from these type of awards, (already has happened with the nominations and Cluxton) and I have a really bad feeling that this year its gonna be Benny that is left out.

The man is a champion - we all know we wouldn't have even got out of Ballybofey were it not for his performance.
And where would Down's championship have gone then?
