One of my all time favourite hurlers. Truely inspirational on his day.

A pity he never got the all-ireland he so greatly deserved.

Rest in Peace Stephen, and fear not - I have a feeling your children, although deprived of your presence, will never be deprived of your love.

Just saw this thread and read through it. I don't post on here that often so had no interaction with Stephen but read his contributions to the board many times.

Heartfelt sympathies to his family, especially his wife and children, at this difficult time.

As a father of a 2 yr old myself i think the quote above sums up my thoughts far more eloquently than i ever could.

RIP Stephen.

Doire Trasna had a team in recent yrs (last 10 yrs or so)

I also played underage hurling against teams from Glenullin and Faughanvale a good few years ago.

Ballinderry - Scooting means spitting.

Tyronies - Rookin' means really hungry.

WTF?

Bullshit.  You're making them up at this stage HS.

Seamusthebard posted on the Tyrone thread about the Ballinderry assistant manager "scooting" water from his mouth at the 2008 county final just before HS posted this so I take he is on the wind up

Here are  few that would have been in common use when i was growing up. Most of them would still be used but more so by the older generations.

Wheen - a few, as in "throw a wheen o turf on that fire"
Lock - same as wheen "throw a lock o turf on that fire"
Turf moul - the dust left in the turf shed when all the best turf are used. Useful for putting on the fire to stop it burning too quickly
Wheesht - be quiet. "wheesht a minute will ye!" or "houl your wheesht"
Footer - to fiddle with something "stop footering with the wireless, you'll break it" (A footer is also a noun for someone who is generally unhandy.)
Whitret (or whutret) - another name for a stoat

There are a lot more that my parents and grandparents would have used but i can't think of them all now.

At a Derry club hurling game a few years ago a manager was heard givin out to one of his player who pulled up when running for a ball.

The player shouts back "I've got a stitch"

Manager replies "A stitch, this is no place to be bring your fcukin knittin!"

Is grabbing an opponent's helmet not a booking offence now?
Did they bring in a new rule about this a while back?

Great news about the wee one. Small children can be amazingly resilient. My own wee lad is about the same age and i can hear him on the monitor as i type so i can only imagine what his parents have been through.

He'll be in my prayers tonight that he continues on his road to recovery.
