The trial of former IRA leader Brendan McFarlane has collapsed at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

The Belfast man had faced charges in connection with the kidnapping of English supermarket executive Don Tidey almost 25 years ago.

The prosecution said it would offer no further evidence after a court ruling that garda evidence was inadmissible.

The court ruled that incriminating statements he allegedly made could not be used in evidence.

Mr McFarlane had denied charges of possession of firearms, intent to endanger life and unlawful imprisonment.

Should action be taken against the garda who told porkies?

Read this earlier, initially thought that he had collapsed at the trial!  :-[

This is a huge f**k up by the Gardai, this had been made into such a high profile trial.

Is there any  proof that the Gardai told porkies?
Looks like it's a verbal stand off and the court is not interested.

Once upon a time the Special Court took verbals as gospel ::)

Don't think that's why it collapsed.

And even if a Garda did tell "porkies" there was more then him telling them. I'd like to see Bik explain how or his finger prints were found all over the crime scene.

Considering that McFarlane has been around a few interogating rooms more intimidating that the Bridewell and considering that his silence was recorded at all times, the integrity of the Gardai comes into serious question.
Once that allegation of admittance was thrown out by the Court the prosecutor offered no more evidence.
There is no evidence of fingerprints, there are no questions for McFarlane to answer.
If there was proof of fingerprints then they would have been the main evidence in the prosecutors case.
Verbal fingerprints are not proof.
