Tesco kids had to remove GAA gear

A group of bag packers representing a GAA club were told to remove their club shirts at Tesco, it has emerged.

The children from St Comghall's club were taking part in a charity bag pack at Tesco in Antrim town.

However, after "very vociferous complaints both in person and on the phone", the company said it asked for team shirts to be removed.

A parent of one of the children involved said the shirts did not feature "anything contentious".

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is an all Ireland sporting and community organisation which in Northern Ireland is overwhelmingly supported by Catholics.

In the past some unionist politicians, including Northern Ireland's sports minister Gregory Campbell, have criticised it for not doing enough to improve community relations.

A spokesman for Tesco said: "It is our policy to ask that the groups wear their uniforms so customers will know the organisation for which they are collecting."

"This gives the customer the option to go to another checkout if they do not wish to support this particular organisation.

'Deviated'

"On Sunday, we had a number of very vociferous complaints both in person and on the phone, including one from a political representative regarding the wearing of the GAA shirts while the group were collecting.

"It is understandable that our duty manager then deviated from Tesco policy and asked that those packing should do so in plain T-shirts."

FROM BBC RADIO ULSTER

Declan Callan said he and his nine-year-old twin daughters arrived at the store only to be told they would have to go home and get changed.

"One of the club members came out and said 'I'm sorry you'll have to go home and get the girls changed because the manager has received a complaint and has asked us to take off our team regalia'," Mr Callan told Radio Ulster's Talk Back programme.

"The girls were a bit upset and couldn't understand the whole concept of somebody having an issue with the GAA.

"Nearly every weekend there's a club bag-packing there - Scouts, basketball, football and rugby teams... and they're always in their club regalia.

"The club T-shirts are plain green with black sleeves, and the club badge is just the round tower of Antrim. So there's nothing contentious and most of the ones bag-packing would have been under the age of 12.

We are re-issuing our bag packing procedures today and would be disappointed if we had to discontinue this practice

Tesco spokesman
"When the store closed nobody came near us and said 'Look we're awful sorry about that or anything." They never came back near us."

The Tesco spokesman said that the complaints continued after the weekend.

"Subsequently we have had several complaints to the store both from those opposed to the GAA shirts being worn and those opposed to the duty manager asking for the shirts to be removed," he continued.

"We are re-issuing our bag packing procedures today and would be disappointed if we had to discontinue this practice as many charities and sporting organisations depend on this facility to raise funds.

'Offence'

"It is never our intention to cause offence so we rely on the co-operation and tolerance of our customers as we know that we can never please everyone."

The politician who complained was Ulster Unionist councillor Adrian Watson.

His party colleague Drew Ritchie said Tesco needs to review its policy to assure charity collections do not cause offence.

"The public don't mind giving to local charities but sometimes they do get confused when sports clubs are involved. Obviously offence has been caused to some customers," he added.

Manager Scolari sacked by Chelsea
Luiz Filipe Scolari has been sacked as manager of Chelsea.

A statement on the club's website revealed the move had been made "to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for".

Scolari, who led Brazil to the 2002 World Cup, was appointed last summer as the replacement for Avram Grant.

More soon.

Listening to Matt Cooper on the way home from work yesterday and there was a discussion on about people saving up to 7,00 Euro on buying a car in the North.  They say that Nortern Car Dealers now sort out all the paperwork and take care of the VRT, Number Plates etc.

Does anybody know what dealers in the North do this because it would be good to check out.

GAA Discussion / Croke Park may remain Open
January 07, 2009, 03:53:00 PM
GAA President Nickey Brennan has refused to rule out the playing of non-GAA sports at Croke Park after the opening of the redeveloped Lansdowne Road in 2010.

Brennan who was speaking today at TG4's launch of their new GAA 125th anniversary TV series, gave the strongest indication yet that international soccer and rugby may continue to feature at GAA headquarters.

"I understand from reading the papers today that there is a motion coming in from Clare," he said.

"As the person obviously sitting in the chair, who will have to steer such motions at Congress, I'm obviously not getting into any particular motions but I always expected that something like this would find its way on to the clár and let it be debated the same way as everything else at this stage.

"We are happy to see motions coming from whatever sources in the GAA and let people make their arguments on the floor of Congress."

Brennan also offered his enthusiasm to the existing arrangements with the FAI and IRFU.

"I don't want to prejudge it but it's fair to say that the arrangement has gone extremely well from a logistical as well as sporting point of view."

The Kilkenny man also spoke for the first time following the introduction of the GAA's experimental disciplinary rules which saw 85 yellow cards, no red cards and almost 180 black books issued during 24 senior inter-county games last weekend.

"I would have to complement, in fairness, the team managers and others for their measured approach at the weekend. I think people understood that it was an experiment and they were accepting that things might happen that couldn't have been foreseen," he said.

"January is clearly going to be the learning period and when it comes to the leagues, people should then be up to speed on what the new rules are all about."

However Brennan was not making excuses for those who are saying that there is an unfamiliarity with the new rules.

"This whole process is well over a year-and-a-half in gestation. We have spent a lot of time educating people and educating the media.

"If people don't know what is going on now, I don't think they can actually blame us for it."

The GAA President also failed to rule out the possibility of the new rules being filtered down to club games, should they be formally adopted for inter-county games at GAA Congress in April.

"That decision has yet to be made (in relation to clubs). I have a personal view on that, that I probably wouldn't like to see it coming in until the beginning of next year at club level," he added.

GAA Discussion / Score of 2008
December 11, 2008, 09:27:31 AM
Just watching couple of clips last night from the 2008 championship and there were some great pieces of skill and finishing in this year's championship.  What in your opinion was the best score in 2008?

For me, it was Doohers point against Kerry in the AI Final, it was a brilliant brilliant score!
