Title: Is Setanta Sports ruining Soccer?
Post by: Gold on September 10, 2008, 10:26:22 PM
I hate the way Setanta have bought off all the competition and have all the International games bar Ireland. I only have Setanta Ireland and hate that i cant choose what to watch. Would've liked to watch the England game or even Norn Iron after watchin Ireland. I had to make do with the 2nd half of the Scotland/Iceland game on Setanta Ireland as its the only channel i have.

For me its ruining peoples enjoyment of watching soccer at home and forcing people to the pub--the same was as TV3 did with the GAA championship matches this season.

Setanta's sports programmes are badly presented with stupid pundits with English accents talking about how well "we" played tonight. RTE took the hand out of their money grabbing ways with a magic Apres Match tonight.

Soccer is all about money , i'm sure you have Sky Sports.  So you'll just need to skip the few pints this week and buy Setanta

You would have turned over the England game at half time - pure dung.
I'd say Setanta done soccer a favour tonight.

You won't have to worry about Setanta for too long, it's only a matter of time before they are bought off. That's basically the aim ofthe station owners - spend a fortune on exclusive right, spend as little as possible on production, get as many subscribers as possible, get bought out. There were rumours a couple of months ago about one of the major American entertainment companies buying Setanta as they wanted to add soccer to their stable - watch this space!

Yeah - very concerned that when they do get bought out the GAA coverage on Setanta Oz will fall by the wayside

For me its ... forcing people to the pub

Surely this is a good thing. I'm not concerned about the ruination of soccer (it didn't take Setanta to do that), but I am bothered about the almost total destruction of our pub culture and anything hat brings people (even soccer fans) into pubs is to be welcomed.

Do RTE still broadcast the Ireland games in Ireland?

Simple answer - NO.
Would be disappointed if the yanks took over Setanta as it may well signal the dropping of GAA coverage and the SPL!
Fcuk off America, youse have your own sports, keep your beaks out of our sports!  ;)

I think ESPN have already bought Setanta. They've certainly bought NASN, which is part of the Setanta Sport's pack..

Don't have subscription tv in our house, hence Senata have brought a sense of serene tranquility to Donagh's viewing lounge - no more cursing to he heard when he accidentally stumbles across the boy from the crips ad or that team in green which holds the world record for not scoring a goal.

far from being bought out, i reckon they are well on the road to ruin, remember itv digital?  Setanta will be going the same way soon imo.  I think they've totally misjudged the market, they've paid too much for many/most of their events and will never achieve the subscriptions they require to make them attractive for a takeover, they will be taken over, but probably not as a going concern.

I think that pundit you're talking about is Pat Dolan. He used to manage a couple of Eircom League teams, and was moderately successful I think. He looks like a bookie because he wears those waistcoats over his shirt :D

Its an open market and Setanta can buy whatever rights they like. the english are crying because they haven't got access to the live games - pay the setanta subscription!!! that's what the market place is all about. if i's not worth the subscription then don't pay the money.

The fat bloke is pat dolan.

personally i think setanta are great. at least there's a challenge to sky sports' monopoly

I was told the English fans were singing "We Hate Setanta, No Surrender to the IRA", funnny stuff. if ESPN take over Setanta and drop the GAA hopefully it will end up on RTE's new european channel if it ever happens

I am with you on that one BSKYB had it all and everyone cried to get it opened up to tender, obviously the free to air stations must have thought nobody would watch the games instead watch the great british institutions that are Corrie or Eastenders, if enough people vote with there feet ie turn the crap over they will have to stand up and take notice and pay the money required to show the games live.

New albums not out yet, that track Rock and Roll Train is class though. They've just announced North American tour dates and South American, European and Asian tour dates will follow shortly we're told.

So they're likely to hit Eurpoe sometime next year which makes Slane a possibility, mind you that rumours been circulating for the last 10 years and theres always a petition going somewhere for it. I saw them a few times and they're the best live band in the world bar none. They would be perfect for Slane.

But I get the feeling this could be the last hurrah, I'll try get to see them in as many places as possible this time around.

This new competition against sky was meant to be good for soccer fans like myself. Now it just means i have to pay even more money to watch club and international games. Maybe in the long run it will force sky to drop their prices, but the way i see it sky and setanta will be trying to outbid each other forcing up their own costs which will be laid onto the customer

This is just my opinion but I think Soccer ruined soccer I can't hardly stand to watch the sport if you can call it that. I was forced to play it when I was young. I personaly will never play soccer again or make my kids play it or let them if they want to "becuase the only injury you can get in soccer is hurt feelings".

KC, just in relation to your 'I want to upload a pic but have no option'..

Cluck on Profile on the buttons above the main information on the page. The buttons are Home, Help, Search, Profile and Logout.

When you click on Profile, it shows the details you registered with. On the left hand side of the screen, there's a panel with various options on it. The goups are 'Profile Info', 'Modify Profile' and 'Actions'.

Under 'Modify Profile' there is an option called 'Forum Profile Information'

Click on that.

The screen you now see has a 'Radio Button' called 'I have my own picture'. In the box there put the url of your picture. (Upload it to photobucket or somewhere to get a URL)

On reflection, you have been in that screen already to enter the personal text, so you're probably pulling my lariat.
