Extraordinary that he was only 19 when he won the Derby on Shergar.  And won so many other big races too.
Did the full story ever emerge about what happened Shergar, who took him, did they demand a ransom, did the purposely kill him ???

It was in the public domain that there was a ransom demand of 2 million. However because Shergar had so many syndicated owners, there was not much chance of getting any ransom fee assembled.

A few different sources have suggested Shergar was shot a few days after. The most likely reason was that it became impossible to move the horse or keep it hidden, such was the search effort underway. Known Republicans were quickly under surveillance once the news broke.

The kidnapping backfired for a few reasons. Firstly, there was probably an assumption that the Aga Khan was the sole owner of the horse and therefore would pay the ransom. It turns out, a lot of smaller parties had a share in him, not all with deep pockets.
The kidnappers misjudged the affection Irish people have for racehorses. They might have thought a cash grab on some rich elites wouldn't case many ripples. Whereas an attack in this vein potentially jeopardised the Irish bloodstock industry which thousands of people depended on for employment.

The nationwide search gave the Gardai and army the means to search safe houses and in some cases find weapons. So it was an own goal on a couple of different fronts and one where anyone involved wanted to disown any connection to it.

The Daily Telegraph had a collection of 157 actors and singers who died in 2016 and what was striking was how many died before age 55. Drugs and drink lead to a lot of early deaths in those professions.
