this is one are stats dont tell the whole truth  if derry had to play a 14? at minor it probably says more about th dery setup than mcNicholl.
another way of judging it is players who played senior on the same day like Benny coulter or paddy McBrearty and indeed Wille joe padden( and a few more)

the best minor player i have seen was Kyle coney Tyrone. looked a dead cert to be a superstar but it just didnt really happen for him

It probably says more about their senior setup than those players...

edit: Just reading that in his first year with Derry minors when he was 14, they won the Ulster championship & reached the all ireland final. Says a lot about the Derry setup alright.

That red is going to hurt Tyrone.

Kilpatrick started the thing by behaving like a dick and he should get a red card for that too imho. Nothing anti Tyrone. But stamping out the root causes may well be the best solution to this shite.

?? He was on the ground with 3 Fermanagh men on top of him. What's he supposed to do, allow himself to be trampled on?

Should have just let the Fermanagh man's leg go and it doesn't spill over I don't think.

1. He wouldnít release the ball. There werenít ď3 Fermanagh men on top of himĒ. There were 2 Fermanagh men trying to get the ball back from him after he chose to throw himself on the ground.

2. When Fermanagh managed to wrestle the ball back, he pulled one of them down on top of him.

He was the root cause.
McQuillan blew for the free.

It was a free out.

Clearly 3 men on top of Con

That video suggests McKenna may have been sent off for a punch ?

Certainly looked like he punched the Fermanagh player after throwing him on the ground.

Hard one to take last night, especially with the start the team made. It just shows you at this level when you are on top you have to make it count and get on the board. The first half was as good as anything we have seen in the last six months. High paced front foot quick passing, just missing that killer ball to put someone in.

Never looked secure at any point at the back the full backs were pushed up so high and werent getting the double cover from Sancho or Elanga coming back to help.

Athleti are what they are, horrible but serial winners. They have a plan and dont deviate from it for a second. Would love to see the work rate stats for both teams, the shape they got in the second half was unreal and so hard to play against.

It could get very awkward at OT for some of that group, I would recommend not leaking anything from the changing room for a while or complaining about game time. Could turn into a long run in for some of them.
Agree with all of that. Rashford needs to take a long look at himself- looks genuinely finished as a footballer and would be better off standing for election the way heís going. Less said about  Maguire the better, one of the biggest flops ever. Elanga and Sancho at least looked semi threatening. Totally wasting Ronaldo though- heís shown time and time again against Atletico just whip the ball in and heíll do the rest.

Club is in serious bother and weíll have to watch the 4 major trophies split between Liverpool and City unless Madrid or Bayern can do the business in Europe.

The crossing and final ball in last night was shocking, especially the last 10mins by the 'fresher' players such as Rashford & Matic. To not even beat the first man is a joke for a professional player. Maguire is a basket case and looked a bag of nerves anytime he was on the ball.

Hargreaves made a great point that they were there for the taking but suppose just shows the level United are at these days. The most expensive team ever assembled and the majority of it needs binned. Ah sure...next year's our year...

Absolutely no guarantees that City win the CL. Other clubs have had money and big names and havenít done it. Thereís a knack to winning in Europe which Liverpool, Madrid, Bayern and a few others know. Sport is like that. History and tradition count for so much.

That's absolute bollocks. Liverpool have won 3 in the last 40 years. None have any link to the other, bar tenuous. 2 were won on penalties. If you're a big club, like Liverpool and Madrid etc, then that's a decent return. But there's no knack unless you can define it.

Itís not absolute bollocks. The teams that win it generally have won it before. The last 1 time winner was in 1997 with Dortmund. Chelsea are a recent phenomenon and won a 2nd last year. You mention Spurs and Arsenal and yes they have made the final once and didnít win it. Like all sports certain teams will always do well. The jersey, the tradition, the history, the home pitch, all of these play into the psychological advantage of winning. Madrid have it, Milan have it, Liverpool have it, United under Fergie had it but that was personality driven as opposed to club driven as is clear. Arsenal were the same under Wenger. They are developing nicely under Arteta but still a bit off. Youíre being obtuse if you refuse to see it.

I'd agree with Madrid but the other two have won it the same amount as Chelsea have in the previous 20 years?

More than anything you need massive amounts of luck. How many winners in the last 20 years have actually been the best in Europe, 8 from 20 at a push?

My god - you all had a club rep at the meeting when this was voted for. Obviously the majority of the vote wins lads - itís an age old tradition. Instead of coming up with problems this system has - how about giving some solutions we can use going forwardÖ We canít play the full league - that is very evident - so thatís not a solution. In theory playing a game every Friday and some Friday/Monday fixtures would be fantastic. But what about the traditional reasons for getting matches off - stag parties, weddings, funerals of club legends, hurling etc etc - where do we squeeze these games in?? THERE ARE NO WEEKENDS FREE!! The complainers at various clubs will complain no matter what - but donít jump on a bandwagon just for the sake of it. Make sure ur club is not on the wrong side of the league split by putting in the necessary work on the training pitch and keeping points or having no points wonít have any impact on ya.

Iím actually not complaining about the system. Itís a seismic improvement on the mooted 16 team D1.

I just find it strange that points are carried across from a qualifying competition to a final competition. Does this happen in any other sport / league you can think of?

SPL split not work like that?

General discussion / Re: Messi or Ronaldo - Who's best
« on: November 30, 2021, 11:02:54 AM »
Is this based on last season or the year 2021?
The calendar year. Lewandowski was robbed for 2020 since they cancelled it.

Then it's ridiculous. Messi has been average for the second half of the year. 1 league goal in 16 league games! But he sells shirts so that's the main thing.

Salah deserves better than 7th.

So how is the voting done? Salah is in the 3 if not higher

Journalists vote on it I think. Seems to be a similar scenario for when Giggs won POTY - more recognition of him finally winning a trophy for Argentina as opposed to being the best player in the world in 2021.

I doubt very much if very many people outside of football nerds can definitively state who was the best player over 2021. In any case even if you watched every single match, the opinion is still subjective and depends on how you view football. However plenty seem to want to offer an opinion irrespective of how many games they have actually watched.

If you are basing it purely on goalscoring statistics without viewing the actual matches, then Lewandowski is the clear winner for the last calendar year but then you have to consider a whole range of factors such as his role in the team, level of opposition, contribution to team success, general influence on matches etc. Aesthetically Lewandowski is definitely not the most exciting player since he is simply an out and out finisher whereas Messi is an all round wizard and I imagine that is probably what has been the single biggest factor in him winning the award again together with the weight often placed on international tournaments.

I would wager that it's the latter of your points which won him the award and the fact that he is Messi and a media darling, not the fact he was the best player in the world the last year. Watched him in the Champions League & the big games in Spain and he was nothing special, admittedly a small sample size! Salah on the other hand has been mesmerizing to watch in nearly every game he has played.

As you point out its all subjective. Maybe the impossibly high standards he has set previous is what most people are judging him against and pre-2008 this season would have been seen as a wonder season. For all that, Nedved winning it over Henry in 2003 was a laugh as was Modric 2018 so best not to take these things too seriously and judge a player on them.

"HSE's Paul Reid: "If you take the adult population, only about 7% haven't got two vaccines. That's a
highly disproportionate number of people we have in hospital -
for 7% of the adult population to represent close to 55% of our ICU capacity"
"

If those figures are true then it tells you that vaccines are working but I think there's a general understanding that top ups and annual vaccines will become a regular occurrence..
LOL so 45% of the people in ICU are vaccinated and you tell us vaccines are working etc.

Theoretical example. Population of 100, ICU capacity of 10.

Using the above figures, 93 people double vaccinated, 7 not.

Even go with a 50/50 split on representation in ICU. ICU contains 5 unvaccinated & 5 vaccinated.

That's 71% (5/7) of the unvaccinated in ICU & 5% (5/93) of vaccinated in ICU.

Vaccines clearly working.

Manchester Citys sugar daddy arrived September 2008,  first Premier league title won under those owners was in 2012. If history repeats itself Newcastles should win the Premier league in 2025.

And Since 2008 Man City have won

5 Premier Leagues
2 FA Cups
6 League Cups

Newcastle deserve to be top of the Premier league but it will take time to get there.

https://mobile.twitter.com/SkySportsNews/status/1446178879928950785

Loads of money to get there she means. Speaking of money I'd wonder how much that face cost?

Why?

Edit: Apologies, seems her statement not yours.

I donít think a club manager would carry 25 on a Friday if he knew his reserves were playin a match. A squad of 19 enough and 17 for the other match.
I donít see how they couldnít compete with Liatrom Shamrocks etc.

Youíre always good for a laugh Smurf Iíll give you that.

U can only play 5 subs.. every manager worth their salt knows who he will bring on as a game changer or to plug a hole in defence.. why take 34 lads on ur senior panel when ya donít need them..

I feel the clubs in division 3/4 know they wud struggle to compete with the second string of the likes of CPN, Burren, Mayobridge, Clonduff, Kilcoo and Carryduff and thatís why they donít want it happening.. obviously if a lad plays division 4 for a few games and is goin well and the division one team takes him in and uses him in a game - he canít then go back n play division 4 league for remainder of the year.. this thing would be easily managed as it is in most other counties.. It would be interesting to see how these players from lower leagues would fare against players from second string division one clubs..

On another note - this board would frustrate ya with the negative comments about small east down clubs players being overlooked.. do something about it.. Carryduff, CPN, Ballyholland etc were yo-yo clubs for years and got their houses in order with underage structures to feed the senior team - now they are established division one clubs..
Saul were the same between division 2/3 and got themselves together and sorted the problem.

Itís not rocket science to get your club established, competing, producing county standard players.. roll the sleeves up and get stuck in.
Aye so only bring 4 then. Makes perfect sense :o

St Paulís went to 3 under Blaney and didnít win a match. They got hammered every match
Eastwood and Tucker donít mean to be smug but never heard of them. If teams have a player that is genuine county standard you would know. Coskery was known. McCumiskey was known.
I just donít get the lower leagues comments. Itís a bit like the east down and south down stuff

General discussion / Re: "Economic inactivity" in the north
« on: August 06, 2021, 08:43:18 PM »
The kind of questions I want to ask are about how it could be discouraged. What are the incentives that people are responding to? Does it make economic sense for them not to work, and if so why?
The cost of childcare is at least one element that discourages people from working. Iím sure many on here pay full time childcare for one or more children so know how much it costs (Iím about to enter that world).  Completely disproportionate to salaries here. I can totally understand why people decide that the cost of childcare is just too high for them to financially benefit from working in paid employment, at least til school starts.

Universal Credit pays up to 85% of childcare

If you qualify for it. If you have a full time job that doesnít pay a massive amount then in a lot of cases, as Rois said, it makes perfect sense not to work as the cost of childcare can be higher than salary minus travel expenses etc.

Some countries have a benefit system where the benefits for not working have a set time period. Be interesting to see how many would find work when the benefits stop. In my opinion someone who has worked and paid into the system should receive more than someone who has never worked

In what way?
