Boots to sell Viagra over the counter, but not in Republic

LEGISLATION ON the dispensing of medicines will stop Irish branches of Boots of availing of a pioneering initiative which saw its high-street pharmacies in Britain become the first to sell Viagra over the counter.

Viagra, the anti-impotence drug marketed by the world's largest drug company Pfizer, is available in Ireland on prescription only.

Dr Ronan Boland, chairman of the Irish Medical Organisation GP committee, said the Irish Medicines Board had adopted a cautious approach to the over-the-counter provision of certain prescription drugs, and he shared their concerns.

"The provision of Viagra on an over-the-counter basis in Britain is part of a pretty liberal licensing regime there which, like anything, has its pros and cons and is open to abuse," he said.

"There is a huge illicit trade for drugs which target erectile dysfunction. Where people do genuinely suffer with erectile dysfunction, it might be a red flag for an underlying problem, such as diabetes," he said.

"Measures such as taking bloods and measuring glucose levels, however, are simply not available here.

"Pharmacies as they currently stand in Ireland cannot facilitate detailed patient analysis and assessment.

"Not every pharmacy has a confidential sound-proof room to discuss such sensitive issues in," he said.

But an Irish Pharmacy Union spokeswoman cautiously welcomed a potential change in legislation which would increase the number of over-the-counter medicines.

"Pharmacists are experts in medicines and are in a position to provide advice to patients on using medicines safely and appropriately," she said.

Following the success of a trial programme in three of its Manchester branches, Alliance Boots began to sell Viagra, which until then had been prescription only, in 29 branches of its Boots pharmacies last week.

British men who want to buy Viagra must register with a doctor and agree for their doctor to be informed of their participation in the scheme.

Patients complete a pre-screening questionnaire before having a 30-minute consultation with a pharmacist.

The pharmacist will then record the patient's medical history and conduct a series of tests, including checking their glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels in order to rule out an underlying health problem.

Boots outlets charge £55 (€64.95) for an initial screening and four tablets, with subsequent supplies of four tablets costing £26.59 (€31.40).

The British government has encouraged the direct provision of medicines to consumers in latter years, and has introduced "patient group direction" (PGD) legislation to facilitate this.

A PGD form, signed by a doctor and agreed upon by a pharmacist, acts as a direction to a qualified individual to supply prescription-only medicines to patients using their own assessment of patient need, without the necessity of referring back to a doctor for an individual prescription.

"At the moment, as the scheme to provide Viagra as an over-the-counter medicine has moved quickly from an initial trial stage to widespread implementation, we will look to bed that down first before moving on," said a spokeswoman for Boots.

"Obviously there are different protocols that govern how medicines are supplied in Ireland; in Britain there is a strict patient group direction initiative that allows us to sell drugs like Viagra without a prescription," she said.

Viagra will not be sold over the counter in the North either, because of different protocols

    Wednesday, 3 June 2009 21:06
The State Examinations Commission has decided to postpone tomorrow's Leaving Certificate English papers, both Higher and Ordinary levels, after it emerged that students in one centre have already seen the paper.

The examination has been rescheduled to take place on Saturday morning using a contingency paper.

English paper two was opened by mistake at an examination centre in Co Louth this morning.

The error was immediately spotted and the papers were taken back, according to the state Examinations Commission.

It has confirmed that a number of students did see the exam paper.

OVER a hundred gardai were called to the scene of a vicious pub battle involving members of the Travelling community in Dublin yesterday.

Scores of gardai, some in riot gear, struggled with up to 15 Travellers after they barricaded themselves into John D's pub in Balbriggan. One garda was brought to hospital last night suffering from an eye injury after the pitched battle broke out in the suburban Dublin pub. The group of mostly men had been drinking in the pub for some time before fighting erupted.

The interior of the pub in Balbriggan was seriously damaged and many of the windows broken after the group began throwing bottles and furniture.

The riot squad, joined by local gardai and reinforcements from nearby stations, including Swords, Donabate, Baldoyle and Lusk, rushed to the scene after the alert was raised at about 6.45pm.

Incoming traffic to The Square area of Balbriggan, where the pub is located, was diverted and for a short period, there was no access to the centre of the town, with both roads blocked. The Travellers are not believed to be from the local area and it is unclear what provoked the incident.

I like to hear what Pavee Point have to say about this..
No doubt those involved will claim they are being discriminated against  ::)

Can't believe its 20 years ago,I remember watching it as a 10 year old in our kitchen at home,on our little 14" TV.
Didn't know what was happening as I watched,I think like a lot of people I thought it was fighting in the crowd.

There is a documentary on the History channel tomorrow night at 8pm which looks like it will be interesting and also the BBC are showing live coverage of the memorial service tomorrow.

General discussion / Would you save a stranger?
April 02, 2009, 08:08:43 PM
On Channel 4 tonight at 9pm.
Would you stop and help someone that was been attacked or robbed on a street?
I'm sure we'd all like to think we would step in and help, but some people have suffered serious injuries by trying to help some one else..
It will be interesting to hear the views of those that have helped and suffered from it afterwards, should be a good documentary

My Internet Explorer keeps crashing,or more actually freezes quite regularly, which results in me getting messages on the screen saying Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..
I tried using Firefox but the same thing happened only but not anywhere near as often.

I have also noticed by broadband has gotten slower lately, plus like in cases when I go to post a message here it won't post and instead bring me to a page saying This link seems to be broken or another thats says Network Timeout along with someother info, but when I then press Refresh I'm brought back to the page where I was typing the message and when I press post it works fine..This happens a few dozens times a day..
Even trying to post this message has taken me four or fives times of pressing post then having to refresh the page.
Any ideas on what might be wrong? Is it my laptop thats fucked or should I be getting on to NTL?
I have loads of space on my laptop as I cleared alot of it the other day as I thought that might be the problem, but it didn't seem to help..

General discussion / Fuel Cards
February 27, 2009, 02:46:51 PM
Just wondered if any of the fellow self employed on the board use a fuel card?
I have been offered a couple over the past few days one from a company called Dci who are working with Topaz and the other is a company called FastFuel who are in bed with Maxol/Texaco.
Both are offering me Diesel for 87c at the moment which is good as most pumps are 97c.
Are there any catches involved with using one of these cards?

A Turkish Airlines plane has crashed while trying to land at Amsterdam's Schipol airport and broke into three pieces.

Plane crashed at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport

The aircraft, carrying 135 passengers, split when it hit the ground next to the runway.

The Boeing 737-800 was on a flight from Istanbul to Amsterdam.

It came down in a field outside the airport perimeter.

One person has reportedly been killed and at least 20 others hurt.

But as many as 50 people are thought to have escaped injury, according to reports.

Aviation analyst Jane's World Airlines Philip Butterworth-Hayes, from Jane's World Airlines, said:"It was new generation of 737s, with new engines and a very good safety record."

"The aircraft is made in three particular barrels - a middle, rear and front section.

"The plane doesn't appear to have broken before landing, and was in pretty good shape when touching down. The pilot must have been able to control the aircraft right up to landing."

He added: "There doesn't seem to be too much fire damage, but considerable structural damage at the rear.

"It may have landed with its nose up. The damage at the back was worse than the front, which implies it landed at a fairly steep angle."

13 YEAR OLD BECOMES DAD

"I thought it would be good to have a baby"
"I didn't think about how we could afford it"
"I thought I was going to get in trouble"

A 13-year-old boy has become a father in Britain.

Alfie Patten was present four days ago when his girlfriend Chantelle Steadman, 15, gave birth to Maisie Roxanne in Eastbourne Hospital, East Sussex,

"I thought it would be good to have a baby," Alfie said

"I didn't think about how we would afford it. I don't really get pocket money. My dad sometimes gives me £10."

Alfie, who lives with with his mum, admitted he did not know how much nappies cost: "I think it's a lot."

Alfie, who was 12 when Maisie was conceived, and Chantelle decided not to have an abortion.

They kept the pregnancy secret until at 18 weeks Chantelle's mum noticed the weight gain.

"When my mum found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble," Alfie said.

"We wanted to have the baby but were worried how people would react

"I didn't know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good, though, and care for it."

Alfie's father Dennis, who is separated from the family, said his son did not seem to appreciate what he had got himself into but at least he had taken responsible attitude.

Alfie had been present at the birth and has been keen to cuddle and hold his child.

"He could have shrugged his shoulders and sat at home on his Playstation. But he has been at the hospital every day," Mr Patten said.

Chantelle defends herself and Alfie from accusations they are being irresponsible.

"We know we made a mistake but I wouldn't change it now," Chantelle says.

"We will be good loving parents.

"I have started a church course and I am going to do work experience helping other young mums.

"I'll be a great mum and Alfie will be a great dad."

Chantelle and Maisie were released from hospital yesterday and will be living with her family who are supported by welfare payments.
