And now for something completely different.......the best team on Merseyside over the past 5 years is back in pole position! ;)

Glad to see you wrote this on the Liverpool thread. For a minute there I thought you were talking about Everton!

As most of us know 4th is what the reasonable Liverpool fan expects this season. Talk of winning the league is/was just fantasy fan stuff! There are three certainties for the top three places Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal. The last place is up for grabs between Man Utd, Everton, Liverpool and to a lesser extent Spurs and to an even lesser extent Newcastle. I fancy Man U for 4th. I even believe they will get there with games in hand. Which would leave Liverpool FC in no mans land again.

Big game today but we are playing well and are in a good position for turn of the year and 2nd half of the season. Despite the fact we are not top we have the following teams all to come to Anfield in 2014 - arsenal, city, spurs, Chelsea, Everton, Newcastle so plenty of opportunity to make inroads on the teams around us. We have hope and if we get few men in next month then we can certainly finish in top 4.

Yeah it's a bonus we will have played all the big teams and Everton away from home before the start of the new year.

You'd have to be happy with a draw today and a win would be huge.

Yeah, a result of some kind would be great! Jez though have you ever seen it so tight at the top of the Table?

Trevor Giles and Michael Donnellan would have been unlucky in the half forward line. Never saw larry tompkins play

But for Thompkins, there's a good chance Cork wouldn't have won those 2 in late 80s.

He was some player.

They would not have, no doubt! (Along with Shay Fahy) He was Kildares  Loss!

25 years is too long a period to look at a group of players. A decade is the most at best. Even then there are players just starting out on their career at the end of the decade or finishing at the beginning.

Anyone from west of the Shannon on Mickey's team or is it a Ulster/Kerry selection box?

Ulster teams are obsessed with two things beating the hell outta each other and beating Kerry. And in Fairness they succeed in doing both nearly all of the time!

Have not seen the list but I suppose the following were not good enough.Declan Browne, Kevin O'Brien, Ciaran McManus, Matty forde, Eamon O'Hara, Johnny Doyle, Ciaran McDonald, Glenn Ryan, Martin Daly, Colin Corkery, Dermott Earley (jnr). In reality you are not a truly a great player without the Celtic Cross?

It is nice to be top at any time and especially for Christmas and the New Year but I think those top 5 teams will all take points off each other and you will see it remaining tight well into the New Year.

I've been saying the past number of weeks that Everton have beaten Stoke, Man Utd, drew with Arsenal, beaten Fulham & now beaten Swansea and the whole time we never moved above 5th. It's fierce tight up there with most of us wary of Man City & Chelsea getting their act together.

I'd make that a top 8 teams. You can add in Spurs, Newcastle and (especially) Man Utd as well.

Shane Curran proposes new stadium that would be shared between Roscommon and Westmeath

Former Roscommon goalkeeper Shane Curran has proposed a new stadium in Athlone to stage home matches for Westmeath and Roscommon that would include state of the art facilities to boost Gaelic Games in the region.
The project would incorporate a centre of excellence for use by both counties as well as underage structures to increase the number of children involved in the sports.
He made the suggestion in his column in the Westmeath Independent and told RTÉ's Drivetime this afternoon: "The key objective to what I'm proposing is the likes of Roscommon and Westmeath would come together to produce a plan that would give the people of the midlands and west region a creditable centre of excellent and a creditable stadium in which to play the game.
"When something like this is put out into the public domain, it is an emotive question because there is a lot of historical differences in the GAA through part-ownership.
"What we have to establish is whether there is a want for it, whether there is a need for it and a sober analysis of whether we can afford it or not."

Interested to hear on talksport that it was down to BR and AVB for spurs job - we got the good guy there for sure. He has done a decent job to date and at least we have a structure and style of play that is identifiable and players seem happy with. BR surprised a few with selection y'day myself included who thought he would go for 3/5/2. It shows he has got balls and was going for a win and not settling for 1 point. Players obviously believe in him as performance showed but we MUST beat the bluebirds/red dragons or whatever they are called now on Saturday!!!
Is it too much to ask for 7 pts from next 3 games - 5 would keep me more than happy but we will see.

Hold your horses there we lost to Hull 1-3 only two weeks ago. That result did not mean we were a really bad team. Yesterdays result does not mean we are world beaters. Perspective.

Bound to have hopes of a title at this stage. Suarez is unreal. Big European clubs are going to be doing their best to pry him away.

That's the way. Same for Utd. The Big European Club came in a took Ronaldo. As for title hopes......Fantasy Fan stuff!

Problem is if Liverpool don't win the title this year, they will more than likely lose them. Champions League football and being Champions of England is the only way we will be able to hold on to him, especially if Suarez has a great World Cup.

Suarez is dust after this season. Rodgers put up with allot at the beginning of the season to hold onto him. His Contract will be a year shorter and he will be huffing and puffing to the press come summer. Liverpool won't win the title and that is the only way to keep Suarez - maybe!

Think AVB has not learned from last year that the Europa League has to be almost totally ignored if you want to be in with the big boys in the Domestic League. It's a waste of time. Cost him fourth last year. There are too many games to win it. Rodgers turned down Liverpool's chance to qualify last season through fair play. He Knew Liverpool did not have the squad or players to be swanning around Europe on Thursday nights and then getting ready for the real tilts on the weekend.

Just two points off the top of the table. Liverpool will be kicking themselves if they don't finish in a champions league spot at least come the end of the season.

Yeah, I'd say 4th is pretty much the aim! The League title is just a dream for fantasy fans!
