So after the Connacht final defeat yesterday - how do ye think we will fare against Tipp?
They seem to be flying high and should have beaten Cork. Beating Laois away is no easy task either (as we found out in the league).

I think one of the biggest issues with the current Galway team is that there doesn't seem to be a clear pattern of play for the team. It's hard to discern the type of game we are trying to play.
As others mentioned on the Connacht final thread there seemed at times to be a half baked attempt at getting men behind the ball which didn't look at all convincing.
At other times there was acres of space in front of what is a very weak full back line.

The full back line is my biggest worry about this team. We just don't seem to have any quality corner backs in the squad.
This surely means that we have to try and compensate for this by putting a proper defensive structure in place that protects the full back line. This would be less necessary if we had the likes of a Keith Higgins or a Marc O Se but we simply do not possess this calibre of player in that sector.
We were well beaten around midfield yesterday but again we seemed to not have any plan in place for kick outs aside from lamping the ball out the middle and hoping for the best. This beggars belief in senior intercounty football in this day and age.
Tactically we are shown to be inept and naive time and time again and our management team don't seem to be learning any lessons.
We are no world beaters but we have the makings of a good side and some very good players.
I honestly do believe that if the backroom setup in place in Mayo for example were in charge of the Galway team we would be doing infinitely better than we are.

This is a very tough game to call.

General discussion / Australian Skilled Migrant Worker Visa - Partner?
« on: October 31, 2013, 11:06:08 AM »
Hi. I've been looking online and am trying to find a definitive answer to this question.
I can qualify for a skilled migrant visa because of my college education, occupation & work experience since I graduated.

Does anybody know definitively - what the situation would be as regards including my girlfriend on the visa?
She would not qualify for a visa on her own. She has had steady employment over the past 8 years or so but her occupation would not be on the list of skills shortage occupations.

Thanks in advance for any advise on this.

Hurling Discussion / Brian Cody RTE Man Of The Match
« on: May 13, 2013, 09:56:28 PM »
Was reading an article in the Irish Times today with Ger Loughnane, Des Cahill & Pat Spillane.

Loughnane mentions the year Kilkenny hammered Waterford in the AI final. Apparently Brian Cody got the RTE man of the match award that night. That's the first time I heard that.
Surely that makes a mockery of the whole award? Talk about a joke.

General discussion / Buying 2nd Hand iPhone Off Adverts.ie
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:56:36 PM »
Hi.
I have recently broken my iPhone 4 and have been told that it is beyond repair. I didn't insure it & am looking to get a replacement.
I am under contract with three for another year or so.

I have seen some for around 300 on adverts.ie & donedeal.ie etc.

I'm just wondering - what can I do to be more sure that I will not be victim of any type of scam when purchasing an iPhone in this manner?
If I buy an iPhone that is supposedly locked to the three network, will it work straight away when I put my own SIM card into it?
I'm not too savvy when it comes to smartphones but I seem to remember that my initial iPhone only worked after I had synched it through iTunes.

I am just really wondering what I can do to check that the phone is legit bearing in mind that I am not really that well up on phones etc. I can't afford to shell out 600+ for a new phone but could stretch to 300.

Thanks

GAA Discussion / Kerry club structure
« on: December 27, 2011, 11:52:10 AM »
Was just reading a report there of the South Kerry senior football championship final between St Marys & Dromid Pearses.
Just wondering how did these 2 teams manage to play each other in the Kerry JUNIOR final last year if they are playing each other in a divisional senior final this year?
Seems a bit of a strange setup. Is it any wonder Marys romped the junior All Ireland last year if they are winning divisional senior titles in Kerry

GAA Discussion / Broken Collarbone
« on: July 04, 2011, 07:36:22 PM »
Just wondering have many lads on here suffered a broken collarbone before?
Did it take ye long to get back playing gaelic again?
I broke mine nearly 8 weeks ago. The club are in a semi final in 6-7 weeks time.
What would the chances be of making it back in time do ye think?

I have full movement in it now but it's still sore when any sort of pressure is applied to it.

GAA Discussion / Galway Football Team 2011
« on: May 17, 2011, 01:15:08 AM »
Well I know our game is a while away yet but what do ye reckon the starting championship team will be?
Hard to know what way the management are thinking as a lot of u21s have been drafted in since the conclusion of the league.
I'll have a stab at guessing the team here. I've included Meehan in it though I accept it is highly unlilkely he will play any part in Castlebar.

1 Faherty
2 Forde
3 Hanley (not a midfielder though maybe they will try him at number 6?)
4 Burke
5 Bradshaw
6 Higgins
7 Sice
8 Bergin
9 O Curraoin
10 Bane
11 Hehir
12 Conroy
13 Joyce
14 Meehan
15 Armstrong
subs
J Duane (probably will make the starting team somewhere in the backs in place of Higgins?)
O Concannon
T Flynn
K Brady
G O Donnell
J Moore
G Sweeney
M Boyle
D Cummins
D Blake
T Fahy

There's every chance Hanley won't be moved back to number 3 and in that case the fb line will be Burke,Forde and Duane.

General discussion / Recommend An Irish Bar In NYC For Sport On TV And Craic
« on: September 15, 2010, 03:09:31 AM »
Hi.
I will be in New York next weekend.
I've been before but have actually never gone to any of the Irish bars...
This time though I would like to go to a bar to watch some of the games on Saturday & Sunday (Premiership, Magners & of course the AI football final).
Can anyone recommend a good bar where i (will be on my own) can watch these games and where the atmosphere would be decent - as I would probably wait on after the games for a few bevvies as it will be my last night in NYC.
Thanks

GAA Discussion / Galway v Sligo - Connact SFC semi final 27th June
« on: June 07, 2010, 08:06:16 PM »
May be a little early but might as well get the ball rolling on this one. Who do ye think will win it?
Personally I find this one very tough to call. I have heard on the grapevine that Meehan won't have recovered from injury in time - and that is not a smokescreen either. Massive loss to us as he is a class act and I reckon would definitely have the measure of Maguire. His loss also robs us of our only real long distance dead ball threat. He is well capable of pointing 45's which no other outfield player with the possible exception of Armstrong can.

Without MM we are still capable of winning this game but we will need to step it up massively from our league performances and obviously from the New York game.
Midfield in particular will need to really step it up as Sligo look to be very strong around the middle third of the field.
Armstrong and the 2 Joyces will be key also in replacing Meehans scores.

If this game was in Sligo I would fancy Sligo to win but I think we may sneak it with home advantage.

General discussion / Towns/Villages In The North
« on: August 30, 2009, 05:26:53 PM »
Was in Belfast over the weekend. On the way home we kinda lost our way a bit so ended up taking a slightly scenic route and going through some small towns/villages such as Scarva in Down and a few more.
The thing that struck me going through these towns is all of the Union Jacks,Ulster,UVF etc flags in a lot of the towns.

I'm just wondering is it the case in the North that a lot of the towns are nearly exclusively Protestant or exclusively Catholic or are these towns mainly mixed but the protestant community in these towns puts flags up or what's the story?
Driving through Armagh city there were Union Jacks everywhere - I didn't realise this was a mainly protestant city?

Am just curious about this as I have only been in the North 2 or 3 times so it is strange for me to see this.
We actually stopped in Scarva to grab a bite to eat and only noticed all the flags and people outside the pubs wearing Rangers jerseys etc when we got out of the car. It was actually a little intimidating as Southerners so we decided to keep moving :)

General discussion / Quickest Route Galway To Belfast
« on: August 13, 2009, 12:06:46 PM »
Lads,
Does anyone on here know the quickest route from Galway to Belfast. There are numerous ways of going so any first hand experiences would be appreciated.
Someone suggested these 2 possible routes to me...
Galway - Roscommon - Longford - Cavan - Monaghan - Armagh - Portadown - Lisburn - Belfast
Galway - Athlone - Cavan - Monaghan - Armagh - Portadown - Lisburn - Belfast
Anyone any ideas?

Also, I need to go to Castleblayney from Galway in a few weeks. What would be the quickest way of doing this? Should I go to Monaghan town and to Castleblayney from here or is there a shorter route.

Thanks a lot for any help on this as I have no experience of driving up north so have no idea of what routes to take etc.

General discussion / Working/Living In Australia
« on: November 23, 2008, 10:57:18 PM »
Hi all. Myself and the other half have been considering for a while the possibility of working abroad for a few years and experiencing a different way of life in another country for a while.
I know there's a few on the board here who live in Oz.
I don't really know anything of the ins and outs of getting a working Visa for Australia so would appreciate any advice that people could give me...
Am I right in saying that the 12 month visas people usually get to travel around Oz only allow people to work in any one job for a maximum of 3 months at a time?
Is it possible to get a working visa that would allow me to work in Oz for longer than 12 months? I am a software developer with 5 years experience btw.
If visa requirements were satisfied - what would be a good part of Oz to experience working/living in?
Apologies if any of these questions sound a bit ridiculous but I really have no knowledge about australia at all.

General discussion / What TV to Buy
« on: September 16, 2008, 05:13:54 PM »
Lads, will be moving into a house shortly and need to buy a new TV for the sitting room. Probably either a 32" or 42" - haven't decided yet.
Am just wondering what type of TV would be regarded as the better buy - e.g. LCD vs Plasma vs CRT etc. and HD ready vs HD enabled etc?
I haven't a clue what these different types of TVs mean or what HD ready vs HD enabled means.
I would watch quite a lot of sport if that makes a difference?
Cheers

General discussion / Buying A House Now
« on: July 03, 2008, 02:17:04 PM »
Hi guys,
With the current ecomic situation in Ireland there seems to be a lot of conflicting theories out there with regards to buying/building houses at the moment.
Some people believe that it's better to hold off for a while while others say that now is the time to buy or build a house.
What does everyone on here think? I have been considering buying or building a house for a while now but am undecided as to what to do really.

On another point - not being particularly au fait with mortgages and the like -  does anyone know what repayments I could expect to be making on a 315,000 mortgage over the various repayment periods (25yrs,30yrs,35yrs)? (I do know that it is difficult to give an accurate figure, I am just looking for an idea of roughly what kind of repayments we'd be talking about)

General discussion / Nokia Phone For The Other Half
« on: October 30, 2007, 08:37:45 AM »
Lads/lassies, I'm looking for a recommendation on a Nokia phone for the girlfriend's birthday at the weekend.
I wouldn't be too up to date on the various models that are available and which ones would be a good choice etc.

Can anyone recommend a particular model? Cheers
