We play senior and junior football and have close links with the local hurling and ladies clubs. Social side isn't bad either! Work available shortly in York for setting out engineers, formwork joiners and banksman slinger. For further details contact Pat: 00447809 749134.

GAA Discussion / All-Ireland winners medals
August 04, 2009, 07:03:02 PM
Lads, I'm looking for info about when medals were first given to the winners of the All-Irelands, what they were made of, did the GAA issue them or was it the winning counties themselves?

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

Has anybody else received notification of the death of Nicky Brennan's mother, Peggy on Jan. 25? I haven't seen anything on any news headlines.

Fr. Charles Beirne is a priest in Uganda who is building a children's hospital in Uganda and is looking for support. Fr. Charles's father was from Leitrim and was very heavily involved with Young Irelands in Leeds and was also instrumental in starting St. Benedicts Harps as an under-age club. We have been approached by PJ Reilly (a Mayoman now living in Meath) to help in the funfraising and we set up an evening at the Tara Suite, Leeds Irish Centre on Friday, March 6. Tickets for the event are £10 or 10 euros each. During the evening, there will be auctions of signed shirts from various counties as well as a draw for £1000 (plus LCD TV and Laptop and many others). Draw tickets are £5 or 5 euros each and both sets of tickets can be purchased through myself. It should be a great night's craic and any and all support would be very welcome. Posters will be sent to clubs throughout Britain and as many in Ireland as we have direct contact with. Further information is available by pm to me.

I know some sceptics out there will think this is a scam, but I assure you that is not the case.

General discussion / Man-management Skills
July 20, 2008, 09:25:19 AM
"Dimitar Berbatov has been fined a week's wages by Tottenham manager Juande Ramos for being moody on the club's pre-season jaunt to Spain."

And he supposedly wants to keep him at Spurs.

A great example of man-management. Any other notable instances out there?

GAA Discussion / No Alcohol in GAA Cups
April 13, 2008, 12:23:13 PM
"A motion from The Heath GAA Club in Laois banning filling cups with alcohol after celebrations has been passed overwhelmingly by GAA delegates in Sligo this afternoon.

Proposing the motion Laois Youth Officer Tom Jones stated "Ireland has the highest rate of binge drinking among adults and teenagers in Europe."

"By supporting this we are sending out a clear message about the dangers associated with Alcohol and Drug abuse."

"I would like to complement Joe Connolly and Brendan Murphy from the Alcohol and Drug Substance abuse task-force who have done tremendous work with the promotion of their DVD and Book," Loftus said.

He added, "I have to say how gratifying that we no longer have after 13 years a drinks company involved in the promotion of the All-Ireland Hurling Championship."

25 counties have all ready appointed officers to help combat Drug and Alcohol Substance abuse."

How will this be policed? And what penalty will be imposed for ignoring?

General discussion / Rev. Ian Paisley (RIP)
March 04, 2008, 09:06:50 PM
Did anybody see the interview with RIP tonight on the BBC NI news at 6.30pm when he announced his intention to stand down after the conference in May? Despite his activity in maintaining the success of the Assembly, he reverted to type by indirectly slagging the Catholic Church in its voting methods when asked how his successor would be installed.
The man remains a PITA and I hope his retirement is neither long nor healthy. RIP indeed!!!

General discussion / Media and Soccer Managers?
January 19, 2008, 01:07:54 PM
How many times in the recent has the media instigated managers losing their jobs? A couple of bad results and suddenly, the manger is said to be under pressure. Never any mention of a player on a bad run being sacked - he's just dropped, pending a return to form (or injury or loss of form/suspension) for another player. Managers are treated very poorly by the press, if you ask me. Anybody think similarly?

For those of you who know Leeds, you'll probably know of Tommy - manager of the Leeds Irish Centre. He has been recognised with an MBE for his charitable work and services to the Irish community in Leeds. One of the concerns he has been involved with recently is the Leeds Irish Cancer/Charity Appeal. This committee raised over £90,000.00 in one year to buy equipment for the new Cancer wing at St. James' Hospital in Leeds. Well done Tommy.

Looking for two tickets for either show preferrably near the front? Anyone know of any going?

I'm betting there's a friendly organised just so Beckham can get his 100th cap. He's already stating he can still play for his country, but (IMO) not competitively in the next World Cup.
BTW What price that the friendly is against USA?

GAA Discussion / Something sensible
November 09, 2007, 08:08:59 AM
"Speaking at a meeting of the Leinster GAA Council in Portlaoise, chairman Liam O'Neill made a call for the association to solve its rules crisis by setting a date for a new rulebook to be launched.

He said that the GAA rule book has so many anomalies, loopholes and contradictions that virtually any miscreant can avoid punishment if he is willing to go far enough to circumvent the disciplinary procedures.

O'Neill acknowledged that great efforts have been made recently to tidy up the rules but they have been complicated so much over the years that only a small number of GAA legislators really understand them.

As an example of how bad things are, O'Neill said that it was a cause of great dismay to him that a player who was reported for pushing a referee recently managed to avoid punishment because the referee reported the infraction using the English version of the player's club name in his report.

'We need a set of rules that is easily understood by all our players, members and officials,' stated O'Neill. 'We need our rules to be clear, concise and unambiguous.'

O'Neill said that he recognises that change cannot come about without the support of Central Council.

'I am calling on Central Council to support this initiative by setting a date for the launch of a new Official Guide. I am suggesting that January 1st 2009 be that date.

'We would then have a full calendar year to draw up and approve a new and modern set of rules which would position us to govern our association appropriately and justly."

At last something sensible being talked about. Any thoughts?

GAA Discussion / Yorkshire Championship
September 23, 2007, 05:40:32 PM
Today (Sunday) saw the Yorkshire Senior Championship semi-final between Bros. Pearse (Huddersfield) against St. Benedicts Harps. After a half-time deficit of four points, St. Benedicts won by 2-5 - 0-10 after a hard fought game. Shame the County Board didn't organise nets and flags and also that the Bros. Pearse lads couldn't take their defeat.
