I would say the Tyrone team that played Westmeath had a younger average age than Westmeath.

Cheers folks - appreciate all this, and will definitely use the info in the future.

The "young team" excuse is easy enough to explain, its about deflecting pressure away from your players by saying they are young and so will improve. The player thinks, I'm only 23 so I can improve. Everyone is using it these days. Remember, when a manager is giving an interview he is doing it for his players not the fans or the media.

I get why he's doing it, but at the same time it would be nice to be able to call it out when it's complete horse manure, as I suspect that it is in this case. A year or so younger than the average (at best) is hardly the same as a team of toddlers, as the line is intended to convey.

Out of interest, who is the oldest county player playing? Jonny Doyle?

Barden of Longford?

Barden is 33, Doyle is 36..

It'd be hard to get a younger team that Clare lined out in the AI final last year, all early 20's with about only two exceptions in Bugler and Donnellan and they're not in their thirties yet either.

Anybody care to hazard a guess at the ages of the Tyrone team against Westmeath?

Morgan (0-3) 22?
A McCrory, 24?
R McNamee, 22?
R McKenna, 22?
C Clarke, 22?
Mattie Donnelly, 23?
P Harte, 23?
C Cavanagh (0-1), 27?
S Cavanagh (1-2), 30?
Ciaran McGinley (0-4), 22?
S McGuigan (0-1), 20?
C Grugan (0-1), 22?
K Coney (0-3), 23?
Mark Donnelly (0-2) 29?
C McAliskey (0-5) 22?

I'd say your too young by a few years anyway for McCrory. Also for Ciaran McGinley who I'd guess is at least 24 or 25. I'd say your also too young for McNamee and McKenna as well. I'd guess McNamee is around 23/24.

I think you are nearly a couple of years too young with almost all the Tyrone players there. Think this is more like it.

Still a young enough team, especially when you consider that Ronan O'Neill (22/23), Barry Tierney (22/23) and McCurry (u-21) have been starting most games this year.

I'd say your off a year or two on some there tickle, patsy wouldn't be 30? I think GOK is 28 and doubt Lynn would be 27? Anyway if you throw in McGuckin and Bell who would start, 22 and 20, then that would bring it down.

Patsy and Gerard would probably be about thirty  they won the All Ireland Minors in 2002 (pretty sure they weren't underage the following year ) Mark Lynch would be in round 28 as he was still U16 in 2002
