A hurling stalwart of Club, County and Province. The "Cur" will be long remembered throughout the Ards and indeed the Country for his exploits and straight talking

Showing my age, but was in the canal end that day.
It was absolutely bananas.
The surge of the crowd forward was unreal.
One of those you were lucky to witness in person.
RIP I am sure he was a true legend in Offaly.

Bord na Mona man

RIP Johnny Flaherty.
In 1981 Galway were cruising, comfortably in the lead and then couldn't buy a score in the last 20 minutes.
Offaly started to eat into the lead and closed with 1-6 without reply.
Pat Delaney's high fielding and solo runs were immense and key to Offaly turning the game.

Flaherty's point off the stick before the goal was a lovely piece of wizardry.
Flaherty had been in America for most of the 70s when he would have been at his peak. He came back at just the right time to help push Offaly to make the breakthrough.

Notice it was Jimmy Cooney RIP, jabbing the butt of the hurl at the celebrating Offaly players.

He of the famous handpass goal.

Probably one of the less skillful goals to win an All Ireland. Remember not being too impressed as a young Connacht man seeing Galway lose that way.

RIP Johnny.

The Galway collapse was pretty shocking.  Offaly came from behind the following year to win the football as well. The 80s were fascinating for hurling with Galway and Offaly winning 5 times, Limerick coming close, Antrim reaching the final and Tipp finally coming back from the dead.

Former Longford forward Sean Donnelly died on Tuesday.

The Longford Slashers clubman assured himself of a place in the annals of Longford GAA when he scored two goals against Laois in the county's only Leinster SFC final triumph in 1968. Sean was also part of the Longford team that was crowned National League Football champions two years earlier.

A former teacher at St Mel's College, he also won three Sigerson Cup medals with UCG as well as Longford and London SFC titles with Slashers and St Vincent's respectively. He became Longford GAA secretary while still playing in 1968, serving the role until 1977. He also managed his club and county at senior level.
