Cork pothole: workers suspended for fixing road

Three council road workers in County Cork have been suspended after they took an impromptu decision to fill in a pothole they found on the way back to their depot.

It is understood the workers were returning from a job when they spotted a dangerous pothole and decided to repair it.

A Health and Safety Authority officer saw them.

He said they had not put a proper traffic management system in place.

The workers were consequently suspended from their jobs.

The council has declined to comment on the suspensions.

The men's union, the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union, (Siptu), has stepped in on their behalf.

Con Casey, Siptu, said: "These three workers have exemplary service records. There is a meeting arranged for next Tuesday (2 April) to discuss this with management and we will not be commenting further on the matter until that discussion has taken place."

The incident happened on 13 March at Bothar Guidel Road in Carrigaline.

Cork councillors were told about the suspensions at their meeting last Monday. They heard that the issue was about enforcing health and safety regulations.

Councillor John Mulvihill Snr, a former mayor of Cork, said health and safety was of vital importance.

He said that in recent times three road workers had died in accidents. The result was that the council was enforcing legislation rigorously.

"Health and safety is number one and you cannot put people's lives at risk," he said.

"The law says it was not safe. You need three or four people to fill in a pothole including two with 'Stop and Go' signs.

Councillor Noel McCarthy said common sense should have prevailed
"You cannot put a cost on somebody's life. It is unfortunate. These men are very diligent working guys. They have 90 years of experience between them. They are conscientious people. But how far do you go. Do you rule out common sense altogether?

"Is this a case where a warning could have been issued to the workers? You could ask what about the health and safety inspector - was he a hazard when he stopped to talk to them?"

Councillor Noel McCarthy, Labour, said: "The lads showed initiative. We are all for health and safety but sometimes it can be taken too far.

"These are middle-aged men with plenty of experience. I felt that they had the motorists and the general public in mind."

Mr McCarthy said suspending the men was wrong.

"Common sense should have prevailed," he said.

The Labour councillor said he understood that there were just three men working on the pothole when there should have been four in order to meet health and safety rules.

Ryanair has announced a new collective agreement with all cabin crew, which it said would result in pay increases and favourable rostering arrangements across the airline.
It also announced new five-year pilot agreements at a majority of Ryanair bases where long term pay deals were due to expire in April this year.
Cabin crew at all Ryanair bases have voted to accept a four-year agreement which, from 1st April 2013, will deliver average pay increases of 10 per cent over four years.
The agreement includes a commitment to a stable 'home every night' roster.
The new five-year agreements with pilots affect those at Alicante, Bristol, Cork, East Midlands, Luton and Shannon.
These include pay increases of up to 10 per cent over five years, a five days on, four days off roster and pension increases.
Ryanair pilots at the airline's Manchester and Valencia bases have also negotiated a five day on, four day off roster.
Ryanair's Robin Kiely said: "These agreements recognise the outstanding productivity delivered by Ryanair's people, whose hard work and dedication is key to Ryanair's ability to expand and grow by offering more competition, ultra-low prices and a greater choice of routes."

All of a Sludden

Philpott got a life sentence today with a minimum of 15 years, the other two got 17 year sentences which mean they will do only 8.5 years. Not a lot for killing 6 innocent kids.
I'm gonna show you as gently as I can how much you don't know.

Indeed. I'd say he will be targeted in prison so it will be a very long 15 years.
I think his wife must be  Irish. Mairead isn't a very common name in england.

According to the Daily Mail he was on £68k a year, some of which was money from cleaning jobs the wife and mistress had. As most of it was tax free the boul Mick was on an equivalent of a £100k a year salary, without the hassle of doing any work.

Mother in UK forced 14-year-old to get pregnant

http://news.yahoo.com/mother-uk-forced-14-old-pregnant-131603990.html

LONDON (AP) — A woman desperate for another child forced her 14-year-old daughter to get pregnant using syringes of donor sperm, a British judge said.

In a ruling reported for the first time Monday, High Court judge Peter Jackson said the mother had behaved in "a wicked and selfish way" that almost defied belief.

The judge said the woman, an American divorcee living in Britain with three adopted children, hatched the plan after she was prevented from adopting a fourth.

The scheme involved getting her oldest daughter to inseminate herself with syringes of sperm purchased over the Internet from a Denmark-based company, Cryos International.

Jackson said the daughter, identified only as A, "became pregnant at the mother's request, using donor sperm bought by the mother, with the purpose of providing a fourth child for the mother to bring up as her own."

In his ruling, the judge quoted the teenager as saying said she was shocked by the suggestion, but thought, "If I do this ... maybe she will love me more."

"My mum is a very determined person and she does her best not to let anything get in her way if she wants it," the teenager added.

The judge said the mother also made the teenager use douches of vinegar or lemon and lime juice in hopes of increasing her chances of having a girl.

The judge said it was likely but not certain that the daughter soon became pregnant and suffered a miscarriage. After six more attempts with the donor sperm, she gave birth to a baby boy in July 2011, when she was 17.

But midwives at the hospital became alarmed by the odd behavior of A's mother. Her daughter wanted to breastfeed the baby, but her mother said: "We don't want any of that attachment thing."

The hospital alerted the authorities, and the children were taken into foster care. The mother is now serving a five-year jail term for child cruelty.

Details of the case were heard during proceedings at the family division of the High Court over the children's future last year. They were reported for the first time Monday after several British media organizations, including the publisher of The Guardian newspaper, challenged reporting restrictions.

A court order bars identifying the family members in order to protect the children.
