A new book out claims to have interviewed the top 10 managers in the GAA.

http://www.corkindependent.com/local-news/local-news/bainisteoir-finbarr-launches-gaa-book/

I could agree with most of them but a few are debateable.

From the book top 10

Mick O'Dwyer,
Brian Cody,
Kevin Heffernan,
Billy Morgan,
Ger Loughnane,
Sean Boylan,
Páidí Ó Sé,
Mickey Harte,
Jimmy Barry-Murphy,
Joe Kernan.

A few debateable ones

Páidí Ó Sé,
Jimmy Barry-Murphy,
Joe Kernan

Joe Kernan won a lot of Ulster titles as well as an AI and won 3 AI club with Crossmaglen so he could sneak onto the list.  Paidi won a couple of AI's but he had a lot of good players to choose from so it is hard to have him above someone like John O'Mahony with what he did with Galway, Mayo, Sligo etc.  I don't think Jimmy Barry Murphy managed long enough to be mentioned as 1 of the greatest managers ever (one of the greatest players maybe).  Other managers who could have been near a top 10 list Jack O'Connor, Pete McGrath, Eugene McGee.
There are no proofs, only opinions.

Joe Kernan definitely deserves his place in there. You are right about Paidi though.

Cyril Farrell deserves a mention ahead of one or two of those names..

John O'Mahony, Pete Mc Grath, Brian Mc Aniff and Eamon Coleman IMO should all be on that list ahead of O'Shea. Mc Aniff and Colemans in counties where there was absolutely no tradition, a serious achievement in GAA terms. O'Mahonys achievements are easily well ahead as was wee Petes. If O' Shea hadn't of played for kerry he would never have ben heard of

If you're going to put the man in your top 10 the least you can do is spell his name right. ;)
As an Armagh man it sort of pains me to say it but Micky Harte is the closest to Sean Boylan as the best manager in the last 30 years.

You'd swear there was no such thing as Managers before Heffo and O Dwyer. Hughie O Reilly managed Cavan to 3 All-Irelands and countless more finals.Behind Micko he definitely must have been involved in the most All-Ireland Finals as a Player and Manager.
His guidelines on how to play Gaelic Football are still in existence over 50 years later today, unfortunately they have been forgotten in Cavan :'(

Dr Éamon O'Sullivan of Kerry would be another one of these forgotten managers. Set the foundations for Kerry's domination of football down the years:

Micko far and away the best of the last 30-40 years anyway IMO.
There's Seán Brady going in, what dya think Seán?

Er, are you not missing someone out?

Big Joe should be nowhere near that list.

Tull Dunne of Galway (64-66) and Fr Tom Gilhooly who managed Offaly when they won in 71 and 72 were very good managers when the role of the manager was not as high profile as today. In hurling Canon O'Brien would have been contributed more than JBM in Cork while Cyril Farrell also deserves consideration.

Surprised John Maughan is not included in the top 10 in McCarthy's book.  :P

Interviewing him for the book would be tough though.

Couldn't agree more Boojangles (flippin hell that's twice in an hour)

But some clubs are trying to bring the guidelines back http://www.cootehillceltic.com/History/Famous%20Celts/Hughie%20O'Reilly/hughie_tips.html
Not a point there you can disagree with - evidence that football wasn't invented in the last few years  ;D ;D

Why should Heffo be on the list?
What is his record? Nothing like Dwyers or even O'Se's

Ans: To sell the book in Dublin

He helped Westmeath win their first and only Leinster Championship. That could be a bigger achievement than winning the AI with Kerry. Could you see McEniff doing that with Fermanagh?
