back in the day, this man would have been in a ward getting treatment until ready to face the world again. Cuts and more cuts (pardon the pun) mean folk are screened , given a dose of pills and sent home within a day or 2

Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster has apologised for singing 'Arlene's on fire' at the La Mon House Hotel, which was the scene of a horrific firebombing by the IRA.

Oh dear, Arlene will be doing more dancing up and down...it appears this funding was blocked by the EU as it contravened State Aid rules.

Its alright she can turn her efforts to fracking!

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/business/news/9m-bailout-agreed-to-save-belfast-to-new-york-united-airlines-flights-34960842.html

Unbelievable.  £9 million of public money to "save" a profitable flight route.

Yeah that's the sort of f**k wits running the place. Basically paying a private firm a bonus to run a profitable route. Where else would you get it ?

A senior civil servant advised against it but I think they are more interested in photo ops than doing what is best

Maybe I am missing something but that article makes no reference to the route being profitable. The fact that was going to be cut suggests it isn't. While there is a £9mn cost, there is no mention of what it brings to the local economy. I wouldn't have a clue on this side of things but without that figure I don't think you can draw any sound conclusions as to whether is good expense or bad.

Irish News 12/8/2016

United Airlines had been considering withdrawing its service between the International Airport and Newark in New York, which operates all year round.

A rescue package, believed to be worth around £9 million, was thrashed out between representatives of the airline, Belfast International Airport, ministers and British government officials.

Most of the funding is coming from Stormont but it is understood the deal will not lead to any reduction in fares for passengers.

"Sources told The Irish News that although the Belfast to New York route is profitable, United had been considering removing the flight in favour of destinations within the US which could offer bigger returns"

http://www.irishnews.com/news/2016/08/13/news/stormont-steps-in-with-money-to-keep-belfast-to-new-york-flight-649904/

The permanent secretary of the Dept of the Economy has expressed concerns over the value for money of the deal, but as Arlene said on the news "Civil servants advise and politicians decide"

United Airlines to end Belfast - NY route in January despite £9mill support from Executive in August.  I wonder was any of this money actually paid over??

Apparently a portion was already paid but will be recouped with interest
