Ulster Hurling and Camogie champions again. Would be some achievement if they could retain the football title too. I wouldn't bet against it though.

This run Slaughtneil are on really is incredible. They've been on the road now for a long time without much of a break, and a good few of them dual players to boot. Collectively they've some fire in the bellies.

Unless they're all IC players it's hard to make out they haven't had a break.

Why bother making a comment like that.  He was just pointing up that they are high achievers.  Derry clubs dont win hurling titles.  They did back to back and a big proportion of that team excel at football as well.

Nail on the head by Brolly.

Does Joe give the substantial figure he gets for writing about GAA away?  What Brolly gets is pay , for doing something, not a handout.

Why are you so worried about Derry and Derry people?

Nail on head there Kilkevan.

My problem with you and your ilk Kilkevan is that you are happy to castigate atrocities of the Brits and co but republican atrocities are ignored.  Alway whatabout.

SF didn't offer the SDLP a pact for this constituency.  They wanted pacts for FST and N Belfast and asked for them.  They didn't want one for S Belfast as they were happy to see SDLP lose.  They only possible winner other than SDLP was Little Pengelly.

General discussion / Re: Martin Mc Guinness

In this thread I am afraid there is a lot of revisionism about what the IRA did in the North.  It certainly was a cold place for catholics, GAA supporters and anyone who expressed an Irish identity.  But the idea that the IRA were some great saviours is nonsense.   They killed a lot of those that they purported to be fighting for.  Bombed the crap out of Derry and many other places.  Undertook many actions that were cruel, cowardly and brutal.  Someone said that the GFA wouldn't have happened without them.  Neither you nor I know that, but if you want to say that the IRA gained the GFA I would have to question if the GFA was worth all the deaths they caused.  Certainly the Irish community have most rights that we are entitled to, but we don't know if that would not have happened anyway.  Non-whites in England and USA have gained a fair deal of equality without going through what we did.

Martin Mc Guinness has been a powerful and necessary leader in recent years and has stretched himself for reconciliation.  He deserves recognition for that.

Not remotely funny or clever.

In what matches were there dives?  Not the Tyrone game, as you could see from the Irish News footage. Is it the Cavan game?  Didn't see it.

Donegal - the new Tyrone.  Flying through the air.  What about the tackle on Johnston?  Was it not a foot block?

I do not understand people who claim to be fed up and don't vote. How will change come about?
should people then just vote for the sake of voting? maybe they don't bother voting because they feel there is no one worth voting for, no one that will make a difference.

When I vote in the North I don't really expect to make a difference but do so to affirm the person who I see as reflecting values that I have.  A party whose leader has been found to not have upholded decency in dealing with a family problem of abuse is one thing.  A party body and supporters who react by closing ranks to protect the reputation of the party above all else represents values that I wouldn't want to support.  Crikey, sounds like I am describing the Catholic Church.

"They are spouting their bile already, lets hope the Dubs put them back in their place."

Jesus, hold on a minute.  Settle down.  I am only asking.  Was Aidan O Shea hit on the face?  I don't think he was.  I don't have any delusions of Derry grandeur but I would be embarrassed if a Derry "big man" went down and feigned an injury like that.  No need for the nasty replies.  Why don't you expect more of your own players?  What about a bit of standing tall rather than bitterness against the messenger. Maybe Dublin will stuff Derry but what about gallantry in defeat?  We should expect more of our big players, should we not?

I looked at the Fergal Doherty shoulder on O Shea, see above.  It's always difficult to be certain without slowing down to the second by second play to see what really happened.  I think it was shoulder to shoulder.  What I can see is that O Shea was definitely not hit on the face, yet he goes down holding his face.  It's no wonder Mayo have won nothing if this is this is the caliber of their men.  I have u12 girls playing and they are braver.

You're right.  That one free cost Tyrone the game.  Bloody ref.

Joe Mc Quillan would not have sent the Tyrone man off if it had not been for the linesman who brought it to the ref's attention.

It seems clear to me that the body checking foul is the really obvious, easier to see black card offence. The others, the trip, pull done, shouting at the ref and opponents will rarely be called.

It may have been the stream I had - but I think there was a tackle shortly after halftime in the same part of the field pretty much identical to the Tyrone black card in the first half that was missed by the referee and linesman.

Anyone remember the incident?
