Could the Kerry and Donegal men not let these magnificent creatures alone?

The poisoned carcasses of two rare white-tailed sea eagles have been discovered in the Waterville area of south west Kerry.

The birds had been reintroduced to Ireland last August from Norway as part of a programme to re-establish a viable breeding population of sea eagles in south-west Ireland.

The deaths follow the poisoning of another white-tailed sea eagle found dead on March 12th near Lough Lein, Killarney.

The fish eagle deaths follow the finding of a golden eagle poisoned by paraquat in Co Donegal on February 19th, 2009.

A red kite found dead near Tiglin, Co Wicklow, on March 16th had also died of alphachloralose poisoning.

The Golden Eagle Trust said last month it intended to lodge an official complaint with the European Commission over the continuing poisoning of birds of prey.

The trust and BirdWatch Ireland called for an urgent review of the laws covering the supply, storage, use and misuse of poisons and the enforcement of these laws and regulations.

Recent changes in legislation by the Department of the Environment prohibited the use of meat baits in the control of birds, but the Department of Agriculture's Protection of Animals (Amendment) Act 1965 still allowed, in restricted circumstances, the use of poison baits to control foxes.

Even if people don't give a shit about wildlife they should still have the cop on to realise the potential damage that acts like this can cause to the local tourism industry. Disgusting, idiotic and pointless.

They don't give a f**k about tourism either. A lot are afraid of restrictions which might follow from habitat being designated for the likes of red kite or hen harrier conservation, while there's always the issue of raptors supposedly taking lambs. If an eagle can be proven to have taken a lamb, they should be compensated, but the laws regarding poisoning should be strictly enforced and penalized.

Would agree but the problem is identifying and proving who the culprits are.
They are scum and it's a disgrace, especially seeing that tourism is one of the few industries we have got left!
Tbc....

Wouldn't say the bird poisoners are scum it is the lunatics who try to reintroduce these birds of prey into wild without thinking of the consequences to existing animals here such as lambs, racing pigeons and family pets.  Typical green crap from misguided looper's.  Really hate animal rights activists as most of them haven't a clue about nature.

So attempting to reintroduce once native species like Red Kites back into the country is lunacy? And bastardised versions of non-native animals like racing pigeons should take precedent?

Your laughable suggestion that these birds are capable of doing significant damage to livestock or family pets indicates who really 'doesn't have a clue about nature'.
