Mayo / Mayo GAA member facing health battle
January 05, 2022, 08:48:44 PM
Lads, a club member and active member of the GAA is facing a battle. If anyone has a few spare coins to donate, it would be appreciated.
Kieran would be fairly well-known Mayo GAA supporter who received his refereeing cert in 2019, just before his son was born

In August 2021 Kieran was refereeing a GAA match when he started feeling a pain in his side. He later sought medical attention as the pain was not going away. Initial diagnosis pointed at possible gallstones, however the actuality was much worse. The pain was being caused by a blood clot in his liver due to cancer. After undergoing multiple scans and procedures and enduring several long agonising weeks awaiting results, Kieran was finally diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called cholangio carcinoma. Cancer of the bile duct, in an advanced stage. This type of cancer is very rare and affects approximately 140 people in Ireland annually and usually in people over the age of 65.

Kieran commenced chemotherapy shortly after diagnosis in September this year.
However Kieran became unwell in November and was admitted to hospital for a week where it was discovered that the chemotherapy had not worked. Treatment options in Ireland are limited and therefore we have reached out to other specialists both here in Ireland, UK and America.

Kieran is married to Marcella and they have a 2 and a half year old son Caolán. They have recently moved into their new house which they have built together in Crossmolina. Kieran is very active in the local community in Crossmolina, Co Mayo. He is Gaelic Football and Rugby referee. At his home club Crossmolina Deel Rovers Kieran played underage football and Soccer with Kilmurry UTD. As a player Kieran excelled at Rugby. His playing career brought him far and wide due to travel and work. His home club and where he started was at Ballina RFC. He has also played with Coolmine RFC in Dublin and Creggs RFC. While living in the US Kieran played with the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and 2nd City Troop RFC In Philadelphia. Kieran is an avid Mayo GAA fan a Connacht and Ireland Rugby fan. He also supports Celtic FC and Man UTD.

Kieran is a Prison Officer by profession with 13 Years service. He is currently employed in Castlerea Prison. Previously Kieran worked as a professional Chef.

Our family wants to ensure that Kieran has access to the best of care. We are currently looking into treatment options abroad. Any little bit will help Kieran and his family going through this difficult time and help with the expenses they will encounter while seeking treatment abroad.

We need your help in raising the funds to access treatment abroad.anything you can donate will be gratefully appreciated and we would be really thankful if you could share this page to help us reach our target.
Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.

General discussion / Recommend me a mobile phone
March 17, 2020, 04:19:28 AM
Hi guys,

Thought there might be someone on here that could help me, as I'm a little bit ignorant to most things technology:

Currently have a Samsung S7 which is due an upgrade. Issues with battery not lasting a day, and storage. The phone is over 3 years old and only has 32GB of space, so I imagine most phones would provide an upgrade on that.

Don't really use the phone for much - streaming videos to TV or Chromecast; Twitter; podcasts etc
Would like a decent camera

I looked at getting the Samsung S10 now that the S20 is out, but it seems to be almost the same price.
Someone at work recommended an Oppo Reno - anyone on the board have one?
Or another phone that might  suit?

Thanks in advance

General discussion / Irish History for Beginners
March 29, 2017, 10:11:22 PM
So I was chatting to a work mate in the pub last night (I live in Sydney, he's from Sydney and spent a few years in the states) who was quizzing me on Irish history. I was giving him a quick rundown and he is fascinated.
He asked me to recommend a book that would explain in more detail. Any one have any ideas - I want to point him down a fairly balanced path

General discussion / Pedometers
January 25, 2016, 05:02:46 AM
Looking to pick up a fitbit / jawbone or similar but don't know where to start researching - does anyone have either of these or would a different model be better?

I have recently started a job where I will be doing a lot of walking, including up/down stairs and in basements (so GPS coverage may be iffy at times). I would like a gadget that tells me what distances etc I am doing without having to turn it on per trip (I already have a Nike+ watch for running and a Garmin for the bike), and maybe monitor my sleep, but not too pushed about that.

Also, I have signed up to do a stadium stair race (6,000 steps  :o) and have started to do some training towards that.

HR monitor would be preferable, the infrared type would be fine as it doesn't need to be accurate, just to give an idea of the range.

Thanks in advance

General discussion / Deaths while abroad
November 26, 2015, 05:18:25 AM
I'm sure most of you have heard of the sad, tragic deaths of 2 x Irish lads on a construction site here in Perth yesterday (Wed).

To those of us living away, it is our worst nightmare, the thought of our own loved ones getting that phone call in the middle of the night. I'm sure its the same for those sitting at home wondering if that call is going to come.

Unfortunately I have recently had some very close dealing with the Claddagh Association (who were assisted by the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust) and I realised the extent that these people help at the time of most need. They were a dream to deal with.

The following is taken from the Claddagh Association Facebook page, as it is already public I hope it is OK to share here. I have no association with Claddagh or KBRT.

"MEDIA RELEASE – CLADDAGH ASSOCIATION INC
The Committee of the Claddagh Association Inc in Western Australia wish to extend to the families, friends and colleagues of the two young Irish men killed in a workplace accident in Perth on Wednesday 25 November 2015 their deepest sympathies. May they rest in peace.
This was tragic accident which is subject to an ongoing investigation so we are not in a position to comment any further at this time.
We also offer our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the other people who have recently lost their lives here in Perth. We will continue to offer our support however we will not be commenting on specific cases.
The Claddagh Association is a not for profit organisation and we rely heavily on the support of the Irish community in Perth and WA to help us to continue our work. We receive a grant from the Emigrant Support Program (From Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland) for administrative costs, so 100% of our donations go directly to help our clients. We are grateful for all the support we receive.
If you or a friend requires support as a result of recent events, please contact us via email at support@claddagh.org.au.

Looks like the Aussies will be putting together a strong lineup - I suppose they are interested in the venture continuing, as it is a scouting opportunity for them.

One off game this year, would expect it to be a sell out merely due to the amount of Irish here

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-04-23/all-australians-only

QuoteONLY All Australian players will be eligible to represent Australia in this year's International Rules Series under a raft of changes to the hybrid competition designed to revive the flagging rivalry with Ireland.

The AFL announced on Wednesday that the IRS would continue in Australia later this year with a one-off Test at Perth's Patersons Stadium on Saturday, November 22 – the first time in the competition's 30-year history that just one game will decide the series winner.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson will coach the Australian team, while Collingwood president Eddie McGuire's considerable spruiking skills will put to use when he takes on the promotional role of Chef de Mission.

The Australian team will not be selected exclusively from this year's All Australian team, with players selected in previous All Australian teams also eligible.

The series will almost certainly be played under modified rules too, with the AFL and Gaelic Athletic Association well advanced in rule discussions aimed at ensuring a broader range of AFL players can compete successfully under the hybrid competition rules.

AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said the League remained committed to the IRS and was keen to revive public and player interest in it after Ireland's stunning dominance of the 2011 and 2013 series.

"Australian and Irish fans want to see a spectacular and competitive contest played between the most talented AFL players and Ireland's best Gaelic footballers," Evans said.

"We are determined to restore the prestige and popularity of the International Rules Series between Australia and Ireland.

"The AFL and GAA continue to believe the IRS is an important opportunity for players from both codes to be recognised for their elite talent by receiving the honour of representing their country."

Evans acknowledged the AFL's inability to field the best Australian team in recent series had hurt the IRS's standing, but said the revamped 2014 format should help solve that problem.

"Ireland's players have proved extremely keen and competitive in recent times and so we simply cannot afford to put forward anyone less than the AFL's best players," Evans said.

"By limiting selection to All Australian players, by scheduling the Test later in the year at the end of most players' leave, and by amending the rules, we believe we will field a strong and competitive Australian side that will re-establish the event's standing in the eyes of fans.

"The calibre of AFL players and officials involved is clearly a vital component and the early personal commitment and enthusiasm of so many of the competition's big names augurs well for the future of the series."

Evans said the AFL had extensive discussions with stars including Travis Boak, Patrick Dangerfield, Darren Glass, Luke Hodge, Steve Johnson, Nic Naitanui, Scott Pendlebury, Nick Riewoldt, Joel Selwood and Jobe Watson to come up with a format that would attract the best AFL players back to the IRS.

In the past two series, Australia has fielded undermanned teams that have lost by record margins.

In 2011, the squad captained by Brad Green lost by a combined 65 points, while last year the all-indigenous team that travelled to Ireland was even more comprehensively defeated, losing by 101 points.

GAA president Liam O'Neill said such one-sided series had negatively affected attendances and general public interest in the IRS, but that this year's later fixture would assist enormously with player availability.

"A sell-out crowd in November and a competitive contest that engages attendance would certainly give us something to build on for the future," he said.

In the IRS's initial stint from 1984-1990, series consisted of three Tests, but a two-Test format has been used since the IRS was revived in 1998.

The 2014 series will be the latest ever played, with most previous series played in mid-to-late October.

GAA Discussion / Graham Geraghty - Evergreen
December 13, 2013, 03:36:51 AM
Has anyone ever made their debut in a competition after managing in it?*

QuoteMeath’s Graham Geraghty is about to write himself a place in the GAA history books as at the tender age of 40, he is about to make his Sigerson Cup debut.

Geraghty, who recently enroled in to Blanchardstown IT to study Social and Community Development has now become eligible to line out for their Sigerson team. Geraghty, who himself was manager of the IT’s Trench Cup team who won the competition earlier this year.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Geraghty told of how playing Sigerson Cup football was the last thing he had expected to be doing at his age.

“It came as bit of a surprise, I didn’t think I’d ever play college football at any stage and it’s definitely a surprise to be playing at this level. I was meant to do a sports and recreational course in Colaiste Ide but I never did and 23 years later here I am.”

The college will face off against NUIM in the first round of the Cup for 2014. Geraghty is hopeful for the upcoming season.

“We have lost eight of the team from last year and it’s a massive blow for a small college like us. But it’s a challenge and we managed to stay up in the league.”

Crazy story - even though it was reported that many of the 34 deceased were shot in the back, police are claiming self defence.

Although you have to read to the end of the article to learn that ten people, including 2 police officers and 2 security guards, were killed in the riot before the police opened fire.

First game of the new season - Aerlik's beloved Dockers vs my beleaguered Lions!

Its going to be a long season for the Lions fans, however I think they can get off to a good start. The evergreen Simon Black and Jonathan Brown will again have to shoulder most of the burden this year after the disaster that was Draft '10

Dockers are notoriously poor travellers, so hopefully we can start the year off the bottom of the table, although we will probably end up pretty close to the wrong end   :-\

General discussion / AFL 2010

The new season got out of the blocks last night (Thurs) with Carlton Blues soundly beating Richmond Tigers at the MCG.

Blues, who have sold their troublesome but prolific frontman Brendan Fevola, were also without skipper Chris Judd.

However, they spread around the goal scoring duties, with 9 different scorers and Setanta O Hailpin among those who top-scored with three goals.

Carlton have persevered with Setanta, who has played all over the field for them, but late last season it was as a target man he most impressed, and it looks like he will play a large part for them this season.

General discussion / Tragic Story in Cairns, QLD today
January 06, 2010, 09:52:56 AM
Just heard on the news this evening; a 23yo Irish backpacker killed when an out of control car hit him as he was sitting on a grassed area. Terrible stuff. My heart goes out to his family.

Horrible news to receive in any circumstances, but cant be easy when he's so far away from home.
