Johnny Joyce passed away during the week.
Johnny was part of the great Dublin team of the 1950s and early 1960s that lifted Gaelic football to a prime position in Dublin - a position that it has never since lost. He was also a hero of the great St Vincent's team of that time which contributed so much to Dublin football.
Johnny is probably best remembered as a prolific goal scorer. In the summer of 1960 he scored six goals against Longford in a Leinster championship game (along with three points in the same game).
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.
I saw that death notice in paper and I did guess that it was the same man that scored 5 goals in a Leinster SFC match.

That's a very interesting piece of information.
Johnny Joyce was a big hero of mine when I was an kid, and over the years I've been fascinated by the story of the Maamtrasna Murders but I never knew of the connection.
Many thanks for that.

Johnny was the sacristan in he local church and was well-known to all the parishioners. He was extremely popular and people who haven't seen the inside o a church turned up to pay their respects. RIP
QuoteMany thanks for that.
You are welcome HiB. Fascinating but also horrendous story and if Johnny's great grandfather (I think) had not been away from the home that night in Clonbur he too would have been murdered and Dublin would never have had Johnny Joyce!
RIP Johnny Joyce.
Irish history podcast did a good mini series on the Maumtrasna murders.
