Getting a bit more involved in the club this year and hoping the good folks of GAAboard will be able to help me with some questions.

Firstly .... can a GAA club (in Mayo) register as a charity? There was some confusion about it at our committee meeting last night.

Seany

No, but some clubs set up a separate organisation which can attain charitable status and it is this company that applies for grants etc.

Seany

Problem with a club setting up as a charity is that if you do anything at all that brings in finance, it creates a difficulty.  This includes selling club merchandise, admission fees into matches, having a bar etc. As a result, the club has to set up a trading subsidiary which adds another administrative burden on an already overworked treasurer. ALso, the charity commission can have oversight of everything you do.

Thanks Seany. Don't reckon we'll be gong down that route.

Get a "friends of XXXYYYY" club/association set up, apply for Charitable status for it and direct a lot of the fundraising activities via that.

All above board if managed correctly.

I would check this out for yourself. Many clubs have charitable status provided any income raised is used for the promotion of club activities. There is also Sports Bodies Tax Exemption which differs very little. Revenue.ie explains most but club accountant or auditor should be able to advise. Thanksgiving
