ULSTER Minor Football Championship
SEMI-FINAL:
Armagh 2-18  Fermanagh 0-07

FERMANAGH MAY have caused something of a shock when they defeated Derry in their opening game but from quite early in Clones yesterday there was never any possibility of a repeat performance as a sharper, well-drilled Armagh cantered to a comprehensive victory over an Erne County side who managed just one point, from a free, in the second half.

The sides were level three times in the opening quarter but thereafter Armagh took control, with goals by Patrick Burns in the 17th minute and Calum Cumiskey in the 21st minute helping them to a 2-6 to 0-6 half-time lead.

Within three minutes of the resumption Armagh had extended their lead to 10 points as Paul McGeown imposed himself increasingly in the attack and Ethan Rafferty continued to rule supreme in midfield.

Armagh also could afford the luxury of emptying their bench during the second half but those who were introduced helped keep up the momentum as Fermanagh were increasingly overrun, and indeed, raised their only white flag in stoppage time.

ARMAGH: D O'Hagan; B McCarron, P Burns (1-0), D O'Neill; S Hughes, C Hoey, M Carson (0-1); A Findon (0-1), E Rafferty (0-2, 0-1 45); C Gough (0-1), C O'Hanlon (0-2), M McKenna, C McNally (0-2, 0-1 free), P McGeown (0-5, 0-1 free), C Cumiskey (1-1). Subs: C Treanor for C McNally, P Óg Grant (0-2) for C Gough, S Connell for M Carson, R McShane (0-1) for C O'Hanlon, S O'Neill for D O'Neill.

FERMANAGH: B McAleer; L Cullen, C Cullen, L Leonard; N Beggan, N Shannon, N McMahon; R Hyde, R Lyons; R McGrade (0-1, free), R Corrigan, S Lynch; B Owens (0-2), E Courtney (0-3, 0-2 frees), J Duffy (0-1). Subs: P Leonard for C Murphy, E Hamill for N Beggan, T McCaffrey for P Leonard, N Maguire for J Duffy.

Referee: S Hurson (Tyrone).

Armagh 2-18 Fermanagh 0-07

THE weather in Clones on Sunday seemed to match the mood of the Armagh fans present as the day progressed.
The warm, bright sun that shone throughout the minor match gradually gave way to dark clouds as the senior clash lurched towards its increasingly inevitable conclusion, before the skies eventually opened up and it bucketed down as people sat in their cars, inching their way out of Clones.

Although most of the attention was on the senior clash between Derry and Armagh later in the day, the Minor Ulster Semi Final also promised to be an exciting encounter - on paper at least.
Fermanagh saw off a fancied Derry side in their Quarter Final with an absolutely heroic display, while Armagh had battled back from an 11 point deficit to topple Down in the Athletic Grounds.

With both sides displaying a positive attitude, a great open, flowing style of football and an unbreakable never-say-die determination, the opener at St Tiernach's promised to be a thrilling match, and for the first 15 minutes it was.
Fermanagh went toe-to-toe with Armagh for the first quarter, matching them score for score, briefly pulling into the lead at one point, and in the early stages of the match even looked to be the better side.

While Armagh were playing a short passing game that was holding possession but not getting them anywhere, Fermanagh adopted a more open 'kick and catch' style from the start that initially served them well.
However, when Ciaran O'Hanlon narrowly missed a goal by striking the crossbar in the tenth minute, the Orchard men settled into the match and got over their apparent phobia of the long ball.

Still, Fermanagh weren't going away and after 17 minutes were still only a point behind, but that all changed when full back Patrick Burns made an incredible run, half the length of the pitch, bursting through the Fermanagh defence and blasting the ball past Brian McAleer to make it 1-04 to 0-03.

Fermanagh tried not to let it faze them and pulled a point back a minute later, but when Calum Cumiskey hammered home a second goal, less than three minutes after Burns, the wheels came off totally.
Armagh began to dominate more and more, winning the majority of the kick outs and tightening up in defence, which had been fairly loose earlier in the game.

Fermanagh, to their credit, kept on fighting, but when Bryan Owens scored their last point from play after only 25 minutes, it was fairly obvious which way this one was going to go.
Armagh were totally in control at this stage but hadn't quite gone for the throat yet to put Fermanagh down, and when a last minute free left the half time score at 2-6 to 0-6 it seemed that the Erne men might still have a shot.

However, if the first half was a battle, then the second half was a slaughter.
Armagh burst straight out of the traps and scored four excellent points in as many minutes.

Fermanagh were on the ropes and manager Mark Henry made a number of changes to try and stem the tide, but it was hopeless.
With 15 minutes of the second half gone Aaron Findon put Armagh 12 points clear with an amazing shot from distance, under intense pressure from two Fermanagh defenders, to make it 2-12 to 0-06.

But amazing shots were ten-a-penny at this stage, Fermanagh had lost all cohesion and were tearing around the pitch aimlessly, while Armagh kept their cool and were practically kicking with impunity.
The Erne men made a handful of efforts in the second half, but intense harassment from the Armagh defence, coupled with an increasing sense of frustration, sent the ball sailing wide.

With the match well in hand, Armagh manager Paul McShane made a few changes, with Paul Óg Grant and Ryan McShane in particular impressing.
McShane's second score was an absolutely effortless mid-air soccer style rebound kick that turned out to be Armagh's last point of the afternoon, while Grant almost added a third goal to Armagh's tally in the final few seconds, but his effort was blocked by an impressive Brian McAleer dive.

Eddie Courtney got Fermanagh's only point of the second half in the final minute of play, courtesy of a free from just outside the box, but it served little purpose other than to spare the Erne men the indignity of a scoreless 30 minutes.
The Armagh minors are on a roll, and with the added incentive of an Ulster title up for grabs in their next match, it's going to take a gargantuan effort to stop them.
