They should have resigned in early 2010 when it became clear the bank bailout didn't work, then the bond yields started rising and when the corner wasn't turned. Ireland lost all credibility afterwards.

The poor Lenihan kids have lost a father and for what ?  FF would have been better off being honest with the people and letting more competent people take charge. It all collapsed on them in the end anyway.  I feel so sorry for his family. That useless party wasn't worth the loss of a father and husband.

Those competent people you talk of could barely manage a tribute to the man today, Kenny was so incoherent earlier, he could hardly string a sentence together and Burton on the Matt Cooper Show this evening was an embarrassment.  Thankfully Cooper pulled her up on her pathetic story about the Green's pulling out of govt.

The awful illness that is pancreatic cancer has been the cause of the loss of a father and husband, you can hardly blame "the useless party".

Brian Lenihan has suffered awful misfortunes recent years, yes.  The greatest misfortune being his diagnosis and the lesser being the impossible situation he found himself in in govt.  He faced each with bravery that most people wouldn't dream of.  I don't think anyone could fail to recognise his dedication and patriotism.  I hope that despite the unbearable sadness that must be facing his family tonight, that they are able to take comfort in the achievements of their son/father/husband. RIP Brian

General discussion / Re: Colin "F*****G" Murray!!!
June 26, 2010, 03:40:16 AM
I watched Murray on Channel 5 one night after Liverpool had played in the Europa League.  Torres must have been injured and Ngog was on and playing reasonably well.  Murray commented that he'd rather watch Dav-EEd N-gough than David Ngoggg! I thought that was quite amusing but obviously much better in audio than written on a discussion board.  He's an absolute twat in those LIDL ads though!!

For me Emmanuel Adebayor is the worst thing about BBC world cup coverage.  Really hard to listen to.  The best thing about it is yer man on Mock the Week taking the piss out of him and the rest of them trying to pretend to understand his shit accent so they don't look racist!!

Mick Mc Carthy runs Adebayor close though, I'd rather listen to Graeme Mc Dowell for ninety minutes!!

I see the health service as a small sacrifice because I work in it and I can see how it is failing today's society. As you point out, it was instigated sixty years ago but is now outdated and abused and there are much better systems in other countries.

By my reckoning, the unionist community has become just about as apathetic about maintaining the union as the nationalist community has become about achieving a united Ireland. Indeed at the height of the Celtic tiger, I believe many of them could have been persuaded quite easily. What I would like to see are all-Ireland parties that have the forsight to see that a united ireland is now achievable by democratic means. I would love to see them researching how to go forward with the economy in the country as a whole. Similarly, and this seems to be the crux of the northern nationalist's fears, a new health service could be devised, based on models from other countries since neither the northern or southern systems are effective. If the unionists (and apathetic nationalists) were to be assured of gains in uniting Ireland, it's achievable. There are definitely gains to be made, someone said they didn't want to be ruled from Dublin but we could be so much better off and saving money in a country so small with a single government, health and education service!

I'll readily admit I'm a bloody big romantic (with regard to a UI anyhow) but I think there would be a wonderful natural justice to reunification. If you think back to not only all the people who lost their lives, but who lost their land, their livelihood, their rights and their dignity since the time of plantation and yet if the current generation or the next generation made a smaller sacrifice such as their "free" healthcare just to reunify the country that our forefathers were stripped of, it would be a lovely tribute IMO.

However, only a fool would believe that a transition to a UI would be problem free, I would say that it would almost certainly be marked with violence. What would be horrible is if (I'm thinking of Israel here) the nationalist community became the aggressors.

I'm relatively open-minded and believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion but think that stating the people of the 32 counties being caught up in the popular culture of the UK as an argument for pro union with the UK as pathetic. By that logic we should be annexed to the US as well! I'm sure other countries eg the eastern European states retain an interest in Russian pop culture without having any bearing on their independence.

General discussion / Re: 3G iPhone
May 17, 2010, 01:31:58 AM
Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice - I'd downloaded quite a few songs from itunes onto my iPhone.  I hadn't sync'd the iPhone with the computer post downloading songs (although I'm not sure what good that would've done since I was only allowed to operate them on one machine).  Anyway I promptly lost the damn iPhone and now I've got my replacement, does anyone know of a way to retrieve the songs I've already bought without paying for them again?? Thanks in advance!

Tony should've taken a Leaf outta Tohill's book.  Jesus Anthony, we know you watched the game but your analysis didn't take up the 2006 Collin's A4 Diary, did it??

I'm listening on Highland (the epitome of impartial broadcasting as already mentioned by other posters!) but is SM Lockhart getting as badly roasted as they're letting on???

Also, am I the only Tyrone supporter backing Derry?  Despise Donegal!!!

Excuse my ignorance but will Tyrone not have a representative in the Ulster JFC then?  Or can the runners up go forward?

General discussion / Re: South America
June 22, 2009, 06:22:54 PM
Croi, I was in South America for three weeks two summers ago.  In that three weeks, we managed to fit in Machu Picchu and a jungle trip followed by a flight to Sao Paulo and working up the Brazilian coast, stopping off in Paratay, Ille Grande and finishing in Rio.  For the life of me I can't remember where the name of the place we stayed on the jungle trip so my number one piece of advice is keep a journal!!  You seem to be set on Machu Picchu and I couldn't agree more.  The mountain climb is a must.  The jungle trip we were on came as part of a package with Machu Picchu and we payed through the nose for it from STA Travel but there's bound to better deals around.  Anyway, my point is you can easily fit in Machu Picchu and a jungle trip in a relatively short space of time.  I think we spent 3 days in the rainforst and we saw lots.  The others on our tour had been to Galapagos and their photos and stories were amazing, I definitely regretted not being able to fit it in.

Sao Paulo was crap but a means to an end for us.  I don't think I would do Paratay/Ille Grande again, would rather spend my time seeing Bolivia or Buenos Aires.  Although Ille Grande was pretty and we walked across the island from the main settlement to a military prison on the opposite side which should be mentioned on the abandoned places thread.  The prison was still operational I believe but the whole area was in a complete state of disrepair (grass growing knee-high up through the footwalks, etc) but it looked out on one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen - surreal!

Rio was phenomenal.  We started off staying in Mellow Yellow a hostel with a good european/irish contingent but as it was the last stop in our trip we stayed in a nice hotel for the last few nights.  Fairly reasonable if I remember correctly.  We went back to Mellow Yellow for tours of the favelas and the organised nights out because the people who were staying there were more similar in age and interests to ourselves than the hotel's residents!  Also I think it was better value to do the tours through the hostel.  As far as safety goes, one of the older tour guides we read listed Rio along with the four Bs you don't want to visit:  Basra, Beirut, Belfast and the last I can't remember.  We didn't have any problems but maybe that was due to all the training we had from studying in Belfast!!!

Do you reckon you could fit Cuba into two weeks as thats all the hols I'll get this year!

Mr Nakata, do you mind telling us roughly how much Cuba is costing and where the best deals are to be found?
